This short report is the progress of my field study. The report is consists of several sections, includes: Research Participants, ethics, data generation, initial finding, further data generation and reflection.
A. Research Participants
I selected three schools among all the schools proposed by my key contacts, using a non probability sampling technique called purposive sampling strategy. The reason I choose purposive sampling is because the bureaucratic process for conducting research in schools is complicated, unless the researcher has an access to the school. Moreover, usually the weather in Jakarta within January and February is quite unfriendly and the traffic is worst, so I have to access the school in the radius of 10 km from my resident.
I employed top-down and bottom up approach in finding the research participants. What I mean by top-down and bottom up approach is I seek support from my key contact who work for school board and at the same time I seek support from my colleague who works with teachers at potential schools. I got the list of 16 Primary schools which implement new curriculum details with the contact number of head teachers. I sent text messages to the head teachers and 5 of head teachers did response my text and welcome me to their schools. Among of these schools, 2 schools postponed the implementation of the new curriculum. For that I have three participated school, School X, School Y and School Z.
School X is a public school. This school has 3
The method of inquiry that I have taken for this assignment is both primary and secondary research. I conducted a survey that I distributed among some of the school population on survey
This section of the paper seeks to explain the steps that were taken to gather the data, the participants and sampling that were employed, the location where the data was collected, the instruments used to gather the data, ethical considerations that were thought of and the limitations and delimitation of this research.
I used surveys to gather my information and my plan for a research design was to do a correlational study. This design for my project worked well with my topic and allowed me to come to a conclusion about my hypothesis.
Due to very high interest in the findings of this research, the findings will be reported both in written forms and oral/visual forms to meet the needs of all consumers of the report. Overall, simplicity is preferred in any reporting form to ensure that the results of the evaluation are both accessible and understandable to all audience for them to engage with the findings and derive benefit from the study. The study and report findings are compiled in the following types to address the needs of all its audience.
I had to first isolate what I would use to research and back my findings. Here as follows is a list of all the methods I used to better understand the schools situations.
Therefore, it is important that the methods used is clearly communicated by the authors of a research study. Pathmawathi et al., article not only describes the research design, research sample and research data collection and analysis, the also include an overview of ethical considerations. However, theoretical or conceptual framework was not as forthcoming.
Sampling is extremely useful in all applications of sociological study; essentially, it would be impossible to study the entire population, and sampling allows us to generalize the large population while only analyzing a small group. While trying to analyze a given population by means of a smaller, representative population, it is important to consider that the best way to sample varies greatly depending on the goals, budget, and intentions of the project. The two major methods of study are qualitative and quantitative, and the two main facets of sampling are probability and non-probability. Probably sampling is primarily used in quantitative studies, and non-probability sampling is mainly used in qualitative studies. Qualitative studies often
This study will adhere to the highest of standards in carrying out social research. We closely follow
Particularly their experiences and situations before the data collection. Letters were send to the principal of the school stating the purpose of the study. Only those who met the requirement were included in the list. Then, we applied the different techniques to ensure that the participants honestly gave the information needed for the study. It is very important that the researchers develop a good relationship with our informants so that they will not get apprehensive in giving accurate
To effectively plan for instruction it is important to know the background of the students. Before even meeting the students in person it is wise to identify certain aspects of their lives that may affect their learning. There is no school that is exactly the same. Across the United States schools differ immensely regarding to demographics. Being a teacher, there has to be research done about specific schools and school district because no two schools are exactly alike.
There are many issues the school needs to consider before starting to collect data. When the school collects data, the school has to observe confidentiality. Therefore, when reporting data, it is important not to reveal students private information and only report on groups large enough to make it impossible to identify individuals. The school reports on groups that are twenty or more people and follows the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). The school seeks permission from the administration and parents, where appropriate, to collect data. The school considers the challenges faced in collecting data such as barriers in language, schedules, access to computers and transportation for the persons involved with the data collection. These challenges need to be conquered before continuing. The school must know the population of the people who will participate. Whereas, there are different sources that can be used to answer the evaluation questions. One source used to answer questions is using data already taken by the school or districts. However, some evaluation questions may need more information. Thence, the school collects data through data systems, surveys, focus groups in addition to already gathered data. The school has data systems that include information about the individual student. Included in this data system are student demographics, achievement, attendance,
During this chapter, the research question would be answered by summing up results of previous research, conducted by NRC (1983) and Covello and Merkhofer (1993) and the results of this research. Limitations of this research, ethical and societal considerations and suggestions for future study would be also mentioned.
A small pilot will be conducted to test the data collection procedures, time needed for completion, and competence of the instruments. For this phase, we have partnered with two local districts (Biddeford and Portland). We have partner teachers at the Middle and High School levels. Partner teachers and principals are provided with two options. First, they were allowed choose a collaborating teacher at their school. This would allow the creation of two groups, divided by
1. Research and observe to determine the size of the study body, the ratio of teachers and staff to students, and the ethnic composition of staff compared to students?
The researchers state that the design of their research is observational in primary and secondary schools but they fail to state why this method was chosen. There were also no variables or conditions stated which does not let the reader know if anything is controlled in the study. They also failed to mention the aim of the study which does not give the reader a direction in which the observations would go.
