Testing on animals has been a method used for human advancement for thousands of years. Generally speaking, if you were to hear, “It's time for you to test a vaccine that may or may not be dangerous or even possibly fatal, for the sake of a different species.” It's understandable that the notion of this may make you feel uncomfortable. Nevertheless, this exact situation is what happens to animals across the world. One charged debate that has taken place for a long period, of time, is whether animal testing has a valid position, within, the field of health and medicine studies. There are two heavily opinionated sides within this conflict. There are those who feel Animal Testing is necessary for the future of medicine, then there are the people who believe that animal testing ( even though, perhaps once had a reasonable stand) no longer serves a purpose in health and medicine, believing animal testing to be ( for many people but not all) morally unacceptable and an outdated practice. Upon reflecting on the arguments brought before both sides of this debate, it can be concluded that animals should no longer be used to test on as it's ineffective and a waste of time.

Since the beginning of medicine, animals were used in the testing of drugs, vaccines, and medical devices to determine the safety of a product due to their similarities in diseases with humans. Many of the products we use everyday are being tested on animals. Many don’t give a second thought to what is being done to these animals to produce these products. The animals that are being used for research are treated inhumanly and aren't given the proper care that they are suppose to be given by law. Hundreds of research and scientific experiments point to the fact that testing on primates in a laboratory is not beneficial to humans; the value of those species who are tested on are too valuable to nature.

Most companies use animals to test their products. There are different sides of the argument about companies doing animal testing. You’d think that when a scientist’s idol shows absolute disgust for animal testing they’d stop, especially as there are more effective and money-saving methods today. Experimenting on animals is cruel and morally wrong. Even as I speak, animals are being crammed into cages in the name of medical ‘research’. Animals are very different from humans, their anatomical structures are also different, so why test on animals when it the drugs they are being tested with are meant for HUMANS? What kind of sick logic is this?

Also, animal testing has shown to be wasting our lives and resources. In addition, not only is animal testing unnecessary, but there are also other alternatives.

Testing products on animals are ways that humans do research. It tests whether or not the ingredients will have bad reactions on skin. Consequently, this is a danger for animals that are being kept in captivity and being tortured for human advancement. The cons of this animal abuse are the animals always end up dying or are very close to it, animal testing is cruel and inhumane, and it is very expensive to keep getting animals to kill.

As with any other topic, there are numerous lists of pros and cons. Over the last one-hundred years, many of the medical breakthroughs are credited by animal research and testing. The discovery of insulin occurred when an experiment had the pancreases of dogs removed. This information was significant because it was able to further the process in saving a diabetics life. In 1988, there were 350,000 cases of polio recorded globally. As of 2016, there were only 27 cases recorded. Without the polio vaccine being tested on animals, polio would still be a major disease continuing to affect thousands of people. Other major advances in the medical field due to research on animals are cystic fibrosis, brain injury, tuberculosis, breast cancer, and other various conditions (Animal Testing).

However, simply because great strides are being made in science does not mean that the ends justify the means. The number of successes are very low, possibly due to the fact that animal experiments are unreliable and can be dangerously misleading because the animal’s bodies are notably different from our own, and they don’t contract the same diseases and symptoms as we do. Animal experimentation is not required to advance medical science in modern society, as these experiments are too unreliable at best, and fatally dangerous at worst, there’s not much else we could possibly gain from these trials any more.

However, some people claim that these experiments should be banned due to the harm and pain they cause to animals, thus raising a moral issue whether sacrificing the lives of animals in scientific experiments would really benefit the progress of medical research. On the other hand, many others support the idea of animal testing due to its major role in avoiding scientists with samples to test their products on, apart from human sampling which is considered quite harmful with unpredictable results. Thus, this essay will examine the both ideas with some explanations and evidence.
