When fans are cheering their favorite team as the players run out on a bright green perfectly manicured artificial turf field, hardly anyone would be thinking that chemicals in the turf have been linked to deadly diseases. The installation of artificial turf has shot up in recent years, and U.S alone now has over 11,000 turf fields (Weathers). Artificial Turf has been evolving since its creation, and has many benefits, but these benefits come with a host of potential health and environmental
They’re among the world’s most controversial drugs. Not Heroin, Ganja, Coke or Crystal Meth, but Anabolic Steroids. Steroids are medical treatments that come in two varieties: Anabolic Steroids and Corticosteroids. These are both synthetic versions of hormones produced naturally in the body but they perform two completely different tasks. Corticosteroids are used by doctors to decrease inflammation. Anabolic Steroids are the familiar term for the synthetic version of the male sex hormone testosterone. Its technical name although, is Anabolic-Androgenic Steroids (AAS). “Anabolic referring to muscle-building and Androgenic referred to increased male sexual characteristics,” defined by the National
I believe that this jumper would be very symbolic for the four aboriginal players on hawthorn list at the time. As each of their lives and journey’s to the AFL are depicted differently through the four tattoo circles that are linked by travel lines, showing that their lives are all connected through their jobs, heritage, race and their friendship bonds. The tattoo circles all have different symbols representing how their aboriginal groups had different beliefs and cultures when they grew up. This jumper in the end depicts the stories of hawthorn’s four aboriginal players and their roads to playing AFL.
As the popularity of soccer increases, controversy in relation to safety concerns continues to rise as well. Due to the ineffectiveness of protective headgear among soccer players, athletes should focus on alternatives to successfully prevent injuries. Concerned parents, coaches, and athletes should heightening rules and regulations and should properly evaluate the accuracy and effectiveness of the soccer gear (i.e., balls, gloves, etc.) being used in order to reduce chances of serious
Over the past couple of years the National Football League as well as other football associations have witnessed a rise in the occurrences of severe head trauma to players resulting in concussions. One of the NFL’s top priorities is the health and safety of their players. These NFL players bring an abundant amount of joy and excitement to their wild, raving, die hard football fans across the nation. However, these mens’ health today and for decades to come is equally if not more important than their careers that often last an average of 4 years playing football. Despite the increase in the number of concussions in football, leagues are doing all they can to prevent concussions by implementing new rules, provide new and improved equipment,
While the NFL is currently a very entertaining and popular American past time, there is one issue that threatens the future of the game-concussions. Concussions affect 1.6 to 3.8 million athletes and children annually in the United States. Among athletes, football is the most common sport involving risks of concussions for males, and soccer is the most common sports with concussion risks for females. The NFL has admitted that brain trauma effects a third of all NFL players (Knowles.) Concussions have been part of the game since the very beginning, but it 's only in the past 50 years or so that medical science and the public has become aware of the serious long term effects of concussions. The NFL is spending money on researching the problem, because they have been sued from hundreds of players that have suffered long-term damage from concussions. The NFL needs to dedicate more money and research into increasing helmet safety, implementing rules and policies to protect players, and utilizing the best response treatment to prevent and protect players from concussions.
Fewer injuries. Durability and an even playing surface mean fewer injuries. Grass gets torn up by rough play, bad weather or both and it eventually turns into vast patches of slippery mud (see photos to the right). Synthetic turf, the other hand, remains consistent, making play on it predictable and safer. Synthetic turf also has better shock attenuation than natural grass. This is especially important for impact sports like football, lacrosse and soccer, all of which currently play or seek to play on Memorial Field.
Many Americans love sports, including football, basketball and hockey. What most people do not think about, is the injury and risks that come along with playing sports. Concussions are a major part of this, and can cause severe brain damage and loss of basic functions. Many sports leagues, however, do not have the right protocol to increase player safety. The National government should implement rules and regulations to improve safety for players.
There is a lot of rising controversy surrounding minors and high-impact sports like football. From Elementary age kids playing little league to high school football, an increasing number of studies are surfacing that are showing many negative effects surrounding head trauma. Some experts are even calling for the sport to be banned from middle and high schools. The concerns surrounding head trauma have existed in the NFL for numerous year, and these concerns brought foreword extensive new research in detection, effects, and prevention. Even today the NFL plans to spend 100 million dollars on new prevention and treatment options for concussions. The shock absorption technology used in football helmets has made advanced majorly in the last 10 years, yet concussion rates are increasing. With the risk of head trauma having long term consequences, especially in minors with developing brains, the ideas of terminating the sport take root. Although serious, these risks are far outweighed by the benefits of football that a substitute sport can not provide: The answer to how to make football safer for minors is much simpler and cheaper than advancing technology.
Lately when it comes to football one of the worst words to come to mind is concussion. Recent research and testimonies from former NFL stars has exposed the true severity of concussions, in both present time and years down the road. Despite a slight rise in concussions during the NFL’s 2015 season, the total number of concussion in the 2012 season compared to the 2014 season had dropped nearly 25%. This was due to the advancement in both helmet and shoulder pad equipment. Throughout recent years the NFL has been working the United States military to combine efforts and technology in order to better the safety of football attire. According to National Geographic, the NFL and the military have worked together to discover what material
One of the more major concerns about players getting injured in football games is that they have faulty protection on their bodies. Studies have shown that since the start of football, players would get hurt every game. Back then they only have leather helmets. Nowadays, the NFL uses hard plastic with thick padding. Injuries have significantly went down since then but helmets are still a problem today. According to one article they state that “An estimated 1.6-3.8 million sports and recreation related concussions occur in the United States each year.” With people starting to see and hear these scary results, many are starting to rally and protest against professional and recreational football. They don’t want their kids to be exposed to such harm. Some people are even saying they want football to be abolished.
Have you ever speculated how football affects its players? Well these are some of the fascinating things that I discovered. There is a very dangerous disease that many pro football athletes develop called CTE that can be contributed to countless deaths of NFL players. There is also a problem with the helmets in the NFL that inventors/players are trying to solve. The head trauma issue in the NFL is generating many complications and resulting problems, including the CTE matter, head to head hits, and the ongoing helmet issue.
Football’s popularity has been slightly declining over the past few years, mostly because of the unease parents have for their children’s safety. These apprehensions rightfully exist, concussions are very frequent among football players and can develop into serious complications; including death. There are also injuries other than concussions correlated with football, after all it is a contact sport. It’s no secret the game is cruel towards the body, I’ll be the first to tell you that it doesn’t feel charming getting crushed into the ground by a two hundred fifty plus pound behemoth. However, in 2013 there were
Football can be a very dangerous sport. And although those who play the game believe that they are being protected by the helmets that they wear, the truth is that this may not be the case. In a recent study released by the American Academy of Neurology it has been found that “protection against concussion and complications of brain injury is especially important for young players, including elementary and middle school, high school and college athletes, whose still-developing brains are more susceptible to the lasting effects of trauma”(Science Daily, 2014). The study also found that standard football helmets worn by the majority of players on the field today, only reduce the risk of traumatic brain injury by 20 percent compared to not wearing a helmet at all (Science Daily, 2014).
Have you ever wondered how much damage the brain suffers during and after a football players playing career? All throughout history there have been cases of serious head trauma in a series of sports besides football such as boxing, soccer, baseball and hockey. Since football is a more contact sport than others there’s a spike of head injuries in that field of sports. To really understand how to make football helmets safer and more efficient, you must understand how effective they are right now, their history, and comparing how much damage they can resist comparing to other head injuries. Football in our youths and professional programs have caused a lot of controversy. For younger individuals, many people wonder if it is a safe sport to play
Anyone who plays sports knows the risks they are taking if they play. What if there was a way for us to better protect if not prevent ourselves and our children from getting a traumatic brain injury that cause serious issues in future life. I played rugby for 3 years myself have had multiple and have concussions, with the last concussion I was told that I cannot play contact sports anymore. I would like to look into what plastics could do to improve the safety in these games whether it be football or any of the major sports in America today. There have been major developments in player safety over the past few years as many past players are having issues that are related to the game they played. Junior Seau committed suicide because he
