Introduction
The reason I am writing this paper is to share the information I attained about human sexuality by learning about sexuality in a college setting and by exploring my sexuality through personal experiences. I do not consider myself to have experienced much exposure to sexual behavior but I do have a cultural bias to what I consider a heavy amount of exposure because the North American culture is considered more promiscuous and sexually active than other cultures.
In order to further understand my experiences one must acknowledge the cultural background, which constructs my opinions towards sex, sexuality, and gender role. My opinions about sexuality shifted quickly as I moved from Israel, a middle-eastern society, to the United

After reading William Yarber’s discussion on prostitution in “Human Sexuality and Culture” I adopted new values toward prostitutes. After learning of the background of prostitutes I was shocked that they can separate sex from their intimate and romantic lives but I sympathize and relate to the emotional struggles that prostitutes experience at an early age such as having a negative outlook, feeling insecure, being economically disadvantaged, and not given adequate emotional support from their parents I definitely developed a more positive outlook on prostitution as a whole after reading and researching the topic. Before, I had a lot of hatred toward prostitutes because of the effect my family withstood due to my father affiliating with prostitutes. I also found great comfort in the information I discovered about what prostitution could be like if it prostitution were to be legalized like in some rural counties in Nevada or like in some cities such as Amsterdam.
By requiring legal brothels to be subject to licensing and registration by police and health departments we can benefit society by preventing the wide spread HIV’s, preventing brutal working conditions for prostitutes that permit abuse, rape, and brutality, and also, a new legal approach toward prostitution could help prevent adolescents from becoming
Legalizing prostitution would lower violence, sex crimes, and arrests. Research and studies have shown that during the time Rhode Island accidentally legalized prostitution, the number of prostitutes largely increased, but the rape cases deceased 31 percent and gonorrhea 39 percent. If ever legalized, sex workers would be able to do business on their own without an abusive pimp, which would reduce the violence and abuse. After legalization, the people who wish to fulfill their “sexual urges” have an option ready. Instead, of committing rape, they could simply pay a prostitute
Human sexuality is a common phrase for all, and anything, pertaining to the feelings and behaviors of sex for the human race. Sexuality has been a topic that has been discussed and studied for as far back as 1000 years B.C. and is still being studied today. As the discussion of sexuality has progressed through history, theories have been created based on research and experiments that scholars have implemented, based on their own perceptions of human behavior. Out of the many theories that pose to explain sexual behavior, Sexuality Now explained ten that are seemed to be the most overlapped, and built off of theories. Of these theories, two that were discussed in the text were the behavioral and sociological theory. These two theories cover some of the basic ideas of what could possibly influence a person’s sexuality.
Prostitution would be much safer in the United States if it were legalized. A study was done in the 1980’s that found that around 124 sex workers were murdered every year in the United States (“Atlantic City Prostitutes Taking Precautions as Death Toll Rises”). If the states would legalize prostitution within brothels only, measures could be taken to keep the prostitutes
If we were to make prostitution legal we will eliminate the practice of unsafe sex in brothels. Beyond economic gains, legalizing prostitution could significantly reduce the spread of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), including AIDS. With prostitution as a back alley business, it is impossible to impose any safety precautions for the industry. Condom use and testing for diseases are solely at the discretion of the individuals involved. Given the absence of health insurance for most prostitutes and the need for business, decent health care is rarely pursued, and condoms are often foregone according to the desires of the clients”(prostitution should be legalized). Clients usually wear no protection. Exposing the chance of getting a disease. Clients prefer the usage of no condoms. And as a back alley business then the workers think they have no choice to oblige to the command of no condom. And we as a state need to ensure that workers have a
Prostitution is a subject that many are divided on. Some believe that prostitution is never justified, and those who choose to sell sex are “bad people”. Others do not really care about prostitution as they do not see it as a real problem. Where one falls on this spectrum can depend on a variety of factors, such as morals, the community, family values, religion, and the laws on prostitution. The three articles discussed argue that through the regulation of prostitution, more people would be tolerant of prostitution, as law is one major way that people categorize right from wrong.
Even though many consider the legalisation of prostitution as a solution to protect prostitutes from rapes and sexual harassment, to improve their working
One more opinion, which is quite opposite to the Nussbaum’s one in its sense, but sufficiently close to it and relative to some point, can be seen in the article “Markets in Women’s Sexual Labor”, written by Debra Satz. Her position is rather amorphic, indefinite in some moments, but closer to the reality, as she writes that “If prostitution is wrong it is because of its effects on how men perceive women and on how women perceive themselves. In our society, prostitution represents women as the sexual servants of men” (Satz 78). The interpretation of Satz's arguments can be as following: all practices and relations that perpetuate harmful stereotypes, such as prostitution and paid
Prostitution is considered to be the oldest profession in the world. Many people support the idea of legalizing prostitution, while others do not. This controversial debate has been ongoing since the beginning of time. Paul Armentano states many points that push towards why prostitution should be legalized, but the truth is that prostitution is just the sexual objectification of women. It is viewing them solely as de-personalized objects of desire instead of as individuals of complex personalities, which is done by speaking or thinking of women solely by their physical attributes. Sexuality has been a controversial topic for a long time, and there have been many thinkers pondering on its effects on societies and cultures all over the world. The physical expression of sexuality is fundamental and universal. What differs is how cultures, religions and societies construe and influence both the setting in which sexual intercourse between men and women occurs and the type of relationships in which pregnancy is encouraged. The idea behind this form of controlled sexual behavior, which was enforced by culture and society, was to promote family health and welfare, and thereby create healthy societies for the survival and expansion of mankind. Prostitution, the practice of selling one’s body for the purpose of another’s sexual gratification, has existed throughout history in all parts of the world. Prostitution is considered by many a shameful, degrading, and abusive practice that
If we legalize prostitution we will be able to better regulate the conditions of prostitutes. Currently, many prostitutes are take by force, beaten, and given drugs in order remain submissive. But an equal if not greater amount of prostitutes willfully go into the business as they see it as a viable option, if not the only viable option, to make a living. The current solution to a public official finding a prostitute, no matter if they are willing or not, is to punish them through arresting and fining them. In some areas police are familiar with the prostitutes, not because they themselves use their services but because they are impounded so frequently before being bailed out by their pimps. If prostitution was legalized prostitutes would be protected by workers rights laws. They would be given a fair pay, possibly enough to get them out of their current situation and quit, and would be better protected from any violence a pimp may normally have to resort to. Furthermore, if it’s legal then more people will decide to join the occupation which will greatly diminish the need to obtain prostitutes with unethical methods. And even if said prostitutes were obtained with unethical methods the regulations against it will cause the people in charge of the kidnapping and not the victims to be punished.
Prostitution is a profession that has been around for thousands of years despite being a controversial topic in many parts of the world. In the modern world, the ethics of prostitution have been debated with many people viewing the profession as immoral. Prostitution is an exploitative and harmful profession for the sex workers. Since women account for a majority of those who engage in prostitution, these negative impacts affect women more. Also, prostitution is a gendered institution that strengthens and
In actual, prostitution is considered to be one of the world’s oldest professions and still we have conservative concepts about it. Since ages, prostitution has been the main source of occupation for so many people in the world. We 21st century human beings boast as broadminded people, but beyond our funneled vision, reality fades like shadows into the light. Prostitution is not going to come to an end anyway, and no one can deny it. Prostitution has been the subject of intense debates in many countries, but in reality, it’s not that vague issue. All we need is to eradicate the myopic vision,
Our society is accustomed to believe that prostitution is a choice, even I used to believe that. In the contrary, the reality is that women, including men don’t chose to work in this industry, rather they have been forced or pressured to go against their will. Prior to being sex workers and taken advantage of, prostitutes are being neglected by society and dehumanized by many.
According to Bishakha Datta, 71% of prostitutes said they had entered the sex work willingly. I believe that prostitution should be legalized for many reasons I will explain below. After looking at trusting articles, I found that legalizing prostitution would improve medical and health issues, make prostitution a safer environment, and create less violence and make it more police friendly.
Prostitution has been a part of our world's culture since the beginning of time, and is the world's oldest profession. Ever since the beginning of time man has felt the need to pay for services of a sexual nature, whether are legal or not. In our culture; however, prostitution has become a topic of debate concerning the merits of this profession's legality. In viewing the legalization of prostitution one must take into account all the pros and cons of the situation, but more importantly what is currently being done to rid society of the problem of prostitution as well as the lack of effect of these so call solutions. One must ask one's self if outlawing prostitution, as a profession is the most effective or worthwhile way to deal with the
Sex and sexuality are very broad and complex subjects in the American society, as they are in many jurisdictions. Sex and sexuality are intertwined to mainstream societal discourses such as morality and ethics, law, justice and punishment religious and public policy matters. Sex and sexuality is fast becoming a very complicated, controversial and complex subject in our contemporary society, perhaps understanding sex and sexuality from a pluralistic perspective will be a better and more pragmatic approach to deal with the related controversies on the topic.
