My oldest aunt, Kristy, inspires me to go into medicine. When she was in medical school completing her cadaver labs she would bring me in as well. She taught me the processes of the human anatomy and the functions of organs. At ten years old, I knew I wanted to be just like her.
I am interested in the field of psychiatry because some of the most influential people in my life has counselled me. I grew up in a series of unfortunate events as a child, which was not under my control; but I will tell you this: I am a resilient person. Now, I have seen many specialists in my life to help heal my memories that continue to resurface as an adult. My current psychiatrist, Cathy Norton, has been one of the most impactful people so far. She has told me, “The best Psychiatrists are

Now this was attractive to me and I assume to everyone else. I am an independent college student so seeing NCCH –an elite college- say they are affordable make me jump out of my seat. I not only am in debt to my first four year of college but also my doctorates. For someone seeing this, wanting to go into professional school (maybe medicine), will for sure find this attractive. Since I want to go to medical school, admission applications may be difficult and to be honest I haven’t yet looked further into them. When researching UNCCH’s website I found them to, “…assist students during all stages of preparation including, but not limited, to enhancing their educational experience, resources in order to seek health related experiences, and the application process.” (The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill News, 2017). I find this extremely helpful finding my way to apply to medical school. Specifically, students aspired to surmount to medical universities may find UNCCH striking as well. Since I come from a family of service I love to give back to my community. From college searching experience I also found universities like to accept well rounded, engaged students. UNCCH, is
My passion and determination to undertake study within the mental health sector dwells from the insight I have been privileged to gain in my current role as a link care coordinator, working with people who suffer from a range of ailments within the mental health spectrum; from learning disabilities, Alzheimer’s, Dementia, OCD, Autism to name but a few.
Having pursued employment opportunities that allowed me to make a positive difference on the lives of the less fortunate, the Counselling Psychology course at University of East London is an obvious field that will allow me to continue these desires. Ultimately, this course allows me to change the lives of people and obtain my goals. The course prepares me for employment as a professional clinician, and grants me the ability to continue the promotion of well-being.
I have always been thrilled by what goes around in people’s minds, but it was at the age of fifteen that I was first attracted to the field of psychology and particularly to clinical psychology. It was mainly because I read my favorite book When Nietzsche Wept by Irvin Yalom. This novel had a personal impact on me, as someone I know was dealing with depression, migraines, insecurities and suicidal tendencies same as happens so in the book’s characters.
While other students in my high school class were looking at catalogs for different universities around the country, I was looking through catalogs for my local community college. For years, my mom spoke of the benefits of attending a community college before transferring to a university, and given my family’s limited financial availability, starting out at a community college was the perfect choice for me. It was undeniable that going to a community college offered many benefits. For example, it would give me the chance to take classes that would go towards earning my Associate’s Degree without increasing the financial strain on my family. It would also allow me to be home so that I could assist my mother and sister in whatever way that I
Psychiatry is a type of science that involves mental illnesses and diagnosing the patient's’ mental, and sometimes physical, health. Psychiatrists are doctors that are trained to diagnose mental illnesses, and spot mental, emotional and behavioral symptoms. They work with their patients, listening to their stories, and performing tests in order to find out what, if any, mental illnesses or cognitive disorders. The median annual salary for a psychiatrist is around $200,000.
I have chosen to enter the field of Mental Health Counseling at this particular time in my life because I would like to learn the skills needed to help people with their life and mental health issues. While attending the University of Saint Joseph during my undergraduate years I took various courses that have led me to making my decision. The courses I took focused on business, biology, social work, and psychology. After graduation I decided to take a year off and gain work experience in customer service and health care. I wanted to experience working with the people in my community. I was hired as a pharmacy technician at a Walgreens in Vernon. Working as a pharmacy technician has been a very rewarding experience for me and I learned a lot about people and their unique needs. I also learned about patient care and how to be pacient and understanding under stressful situations.
I firmly believe in myself, in my capabilities, in my skills, in my character, and in my integrity. I also firmly believe in my abilities to achieve my educational and personal goals. I intend to achieve my goal of receiving Master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling. I will pursue this area of study in college, focusing on the necessary course work.
I feel that I would gain the most and also be most passionate about the mental health challenge. For a long time the functions and processes of the human mind have fascinated me as I have learned about them not only in the classroom but from first hand experience. Psychology was my favorite course that I took in high school and although it is known to be difficult, I did not struggle with it because it is easy to learn something that captures your interest so deeply. And personally, since I was young I have struggled with and worked through clinical depression, working with therapists and psychiatrists to understand the inner workings of my own mind, and I learned how to cope with and overcome my own mental disorder. Learning about other disorders
It is my strong desire to attend Fielding Graduate University APA (American Psychological Association) accredited doctoral program in clinical psychology. I have always been intrigued by the human mind for as long as I can remember, specifically the psychopathology of it. I truly enjoy conducting psychological research, learning about psychopathology and how to treat it. While conducting research and learning, it is important to remember that the purpose of psychology isn’t to predict a person’s thoughts, actions, and behaviors, but to understand them. There are dozens of events that occurred in my twenty-five years of life that led me to this meaningful choice of pursuing a doctorate. The two most significant events were when I was in the
My Uncle is my main influencer in becoming a doctor, he is a medical doctor of Psychiatry, he is definitely my main role model, that pushes me to be my best and to follow my dream of becoming a doctor. My specific reason for wanting to join the field is my interest in the complexity and interwoven puzzles that come about when dealing with problems throughout the human body. Becoming a doctor has been a dream of mine for a long time and I know that if I was to become one I would feel like I would have a career that I would love showing up to every day no matter
Back in 2013, I joined an online Minecraft server named McBrawl. I ended up spending the next two years of my life deeply immersed in this tight-knit community. Here, I learned about video games, administrative roles, and most importantly, the mental disorders that plagued people. Due to the anonymity the internet provided, players felt more comfortable talking about their issues, as their names and faces were unknown. Thus, I listened to many of the players’ thoughts on suicide, bulimia, depression, and more.
My desires to excel in the field of psychiatry and to refine my clinical skills lead me to the impressive health care system of the United States. The up-to-date evidence based medical practice, there further developed and refined my diagnostic skills, patient approach and thought process regarding treatment. The academic facilities in US institutions are amongst the best in the world and so I decided to apply here. I am looking for a training program in Psychiatry which can enhance my qualities as a decisive thinker and teach me to use deductive reasoning close of evidence-based medicine. I will always welcome any opportunity that involves the advancement of the medical field.
My constant desire to know how people worked, why they worked that way and how to rectify illnesses people faced, has followed me throughout my maturity. A specific fascination of mine was how people could take medication and it would appear in a matter of time, be entirely fine. This led me to want to study the biology of disease and health, the chemistry of the manufacture of medicine, and the ability to describe and explain this knowledge. I believe this is essentially pharmacy.
Growing up with a mother who is a registered nurse, I have been able to appreciate and understand the importance of health. She has instilled her compassionate and caring nature in me throughout my whole life. She taught me not only how crucial personal health is but also how important community health and prevention is. Even while working in today’s heavily pharmaceutical influenced “modern” healthcare system, my mother has always valued and emphasized the use of natural and holistic treatment methods. Her everlasting influence on me rooted my interest in careers with the potential to have highly beneficial impacts on others.
The major that captured my interest is Psychology. I, personally, always had somewhat of an attraction towards the field and, although I’ve changed my academic objectives, and the direction in which I will go after I earn a Bachelor’s degree, I am completely compelled to the way, and variants, in which the human mind functions. For this same reason, I have decided to apply to Medical school so I can deepen my knowledge on the biological, and genetic aspects of the human mind, and body. Once a medical doctor I will submerge myself, once more, into a more detailed branch of medicine, Psychiatry. One thing I want to accomplish with such degree is to further understand the different variables playing a part in mental illnesses and
