The founder of psychoanalysis, Sigmund Freud, developed a wide variety of psychoanalytic theories that are often used to examine a diverse body of literary and artistic works. For example, the Family Romance theory. It is an abnormal state of mind a child enters during the pre-pubescent stage. It consists of the child fantasizing that they are not the biological son or daughter of their given parent. This phenomenon commonly occurs when a parent fails to reciprocate affection to their child; consequently, causing them to seek retaliation through imaginary means. In addition, the Family Romance theory is often used to explain a child’s transition into adulthood. The film depicts the aftermath of the Spanish Civil War through the eyes of Ophelia, an innocent child, and the magical realm she comes across in the woods. In order to showcase the importance of rejecting the authority of a parent to gain independence, Guillermo del Toro presents various elements of the Family Romance theory throughout the course of the film. For instance, it is Ophelia's lack of a father figure, a rivalry between her and her unborn brother, and withering relationship with her mother that ultimately serve as the catalyst for her fantasies as well as her development into the adult community.
