In this paper, we will discuss the term Autism, the benefits of behavior therapy, and how such therapy is been used to help children that are suffering from the disorder. Autism is the fastest growing developmental disability in the United States. According to Center for Disease Control’s 2014 report, there are 3.5 million Americans affected by Autism; while one in 68 births are diagnosed with Autism. The increase of Autism has led to funding for a number research studies and various behavior therapy services.
In 1943, Leo Kanner, an Australian-American psychiatrist, was the first to coin the term “infantile autism” based on observations made in a study. Kanner observed 11 children with communication problems and repetitive behaviors, such as rocking, sucking, and lack of social interactions. The cause of Autism is still unknown to researchers, although researchers believe that genes and environment formulate a big contribution to the cause.

Some early signs of Autism in babies are the following: avoiding eye movement when being fed by their caregivers and not reaching out to be picked up by the familiar faces of their caregivers. Caregivers must pay attention to the development of the child because each child must acquire certain skills at every milestone of their growing stages. For example, by 12 months, the baby should babble; by 24 months, the child should be able to express meaningful two-word phrases without imitating or repeating others. A child with autism will have difficulties responding to their name, smiling and making eye contact, babbling or cooing by twelve months, and using single or two word phrases by twenty-four months (NIMH, n.d.). A proper diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder is a two part process. The child is first given a general screening to check for developmental issues. If the child is not making satisfactory developmental progress according to his or her age group, the child would be referred for additional screening. Autism Spectrum Disorder is a common neurobehavioral disorder that is caused during prenatal development. This specific disorder affects 1 in 68 children in Canada and is increasing every single year. “More children will be diagnosed with autism this year than with AIDS, diabetes, and cancer combined” (KenCrest). Although some seem harmless, others appear to be harsher. The main symptom shows the child having social-interaction difficulties. Developing infants naturally are social, for example, they grab fingers, stare at faces, and turn toward voices by 2-3 months. Many infants with Autism in the 8-10 month period show symptoms of failing to respond to their names, and a non interest in baby talk or people. Another symptom portrays repetitive behavior. This behavior includes hand-flapping, rocking, arranging and rearranging objects, and repeating sounds, words, or phrases. In more severe cases, some kids spend hours lining up toys in a specific way instead of playing with them. If even one toy is messed up, the child likely has an emotional tantrum. Lastly, a symptom contains communication problems. When language begins to develop, the person with autism may use speech in unusual ways. Some have difficulty combining words into meaningful sentences. They may speak only single words or repeat the same phrase over and over (2).

With a slight increase of knowledge about the disability, researchers searched for reasons of the causes of autism. According to Bruno Bettelheim, he claimed that mothers not being affectionate enough, demonstrating coldness towards their children caused the Autism. Kanner and Bettelheim worked together to prove their hypothesis that children who were diagnosis with autism had mothers who were fridge and unloving towards them (Mandal, 2009). They conducted many different experiments to prove this theory; they even would separate the children with autism from their mothers, recording their actions for date to support their hypothesis.
