Society and people have always been an interest to me. My entire life has been incorporated around helping those who are not able to help themselves. I take enormous pride in being open minded and free of judgement, when it comes to interacting with individuals. At a young age I was immersed in diversity, with my mother being a physical therapist working with severely disabled children, my father was physician assistant working with the elderly and disabled veterans. This exposure, at a young age opened my world to different cultures, people, and different situations that humbled me to have a level of understanding. Therefore with the level of understanding i have, come the challenges of working as a child investigator, and the biggest …show more content…
I obtained a bachelors of science in psychology with a minor in sociology. Within my course studies, I have studied in child development, family dynamics, deviant behavior, research and theories. My own personal experiences also prepares me for this position. I grew up in a very chaotic household, i was often labeled special needs due to the fact that specialist were unfamiliar with dealing with children experiencing trauma. Although i do have disabilities, I do not use them as a crutch not to excel in the the thing that i choose to do. It was not until my family and i were matched with individuals who understood not only what i was experiencing but also what my parents were experiencing we were able to grow and learn to do different things and have a much better result. I am an adult with ADHD and it is not a negative disability. It allows me to be enthusiastic, passionate, outgoing and allows empathy. My interpersonal skills have worked in abundance in every job i have performed. These skills will allow me to not only be able to deal with what some might call hostile families but offers a clear level of understanding with children as well as to effectively communicate with the adults about what is happening. Most time where you see people becoming enrage or hostile is not because they are upset with you but because they do not understand. I will be able to deliver that message so then whatever work needs to be done will be able to and my self and cases will be able to move
Having pursued employment opportunities that allowed me to make a positive difference on the lives of the less fortunate, the Counselling Psychology course at University of East London is an obvious field that will allow me to continue these desires. My entire life I have always been on the search of a career that would fit my persona, fit who I truly am, and to become someone who will constantly have the ability to help people through their difficult problems that they face. Throughout my life I have been deemed the type of person that people felt comfortable coming to with their problems. Maybe people feel this way because they sense that I have a sympathetic ear? Well, all I can say is that human behavior has always seemed interesting to me and that is probably why I made the decision to go down the psychology career pathway.
As a psychology graduate, with a BSc in Applied Psychology and MSc in Health Psychology, I’m currently seeking a role as ‘Assistant Psychologist’. It is for this reason I’m contacting you, as I believe my experience and education would make me the ideal candidate to work at Oakfield Psychological services in Altrincham. Studying psychology for four years has quipped me with the core skills needed to successfully conduct research and to apply psychological interventions. During my time as an undergraduate I focussed my research on personality dimensions and psychological well-being. This gave me an in depth understanding of the topic areas and provided me with report writing and data collection skills needed for further study.
Multiple years of research and field experience as well as my undergraduate coursework in Psychology, Counseling, and General Education has provided me with ample skills to be successful at the graduate level in the School Psychology program offered at Francis Marion University. Working within the school system with students with mental health needs and exceptionalities has been a dream of mine since I was in high school. I am confident the School Psychology program at Francis Marion University will provide me with the skill set needed to make my dream a reality and become the best School Psychologist I can be.
“It takes a village to raise a child.” I never quite understood that saying when I was growing up, but my experiences teaching and working in school settings have showed me how true it really is. Obtaining a degree in school psychology will allow me to give the support that students, families and educators need to ensure that every student will thrive.
When I declared a psychology major during the second year of my undergraduate career, my objective was to attend medical school and eventually become a psychiatrist. I enjoyed the psychology classes in which I was enrolled and found them to compliment the premed curriculum I also wanted to study. I reasoned that a major in psychology would provide insight that could later be useful in my planned studies of psychiatry. Although I decided against going to medical school, psychology remained the primary area of focus of my studies with the ultimate career goal of becoming a clinical psychologist. While my long term professional plans include achieving a PhD and becoming a clinical psychologist. Pursuing a masters degree in
Lawrence fiddled with a toy while listening to the radio. After the broadcast was over, he softly mumbled something, though he generally kept to himself. I listened closely since his autism typically prevented Lawrence from stringing even two words together. He had recited the entire radio program, virtually word for word, even mimicking the tone of the broadcaster's voice. My jaw dropped. At that moment I knew that I wanted to learn more about Lawrence’s autism condition so that I could help him grow, but I also hoped to dedicate myself to studying the brain both from a physiological and psychological standpoint.
Psychology has always fascinated me, learning about classical conditioning (Ivan Pavlov), personality the id, ego, and superego (Sigmund Freud), were all interesting subjects in my high school introduction to psychology class. This subject was very interesting that it planted a desire that I had never forgotten, the desire of wanting to be a psychologist. The dysfunctional home environment in which I grew up also played a role in my decision. Although, I presently I hold a BA in Information Systems, I decided to return to school for my masters in psychology, since it was my first love. Choosing clinical psychology with a specialization in forensic was an easy decision, I love psychology and learning about the law of our country and the United Kingdom. One of my favorite past times is watching television shows old and new alike, such as Perry Mason, The Good Wife on CBS, Law and Order/Special Victim Unit on NBC, and Damages on Netflix. Television shows in the United States and the United Kingdom are not my only pass time, I love to cook, growing up in a Jamaican household undoubtedly allowed me the ability to learn to cook, some of their main dishes such as ackee and salt/cod fish, escovitch fish, curry chicken and much more. My mother also taught me to cook Italian dishes, and within the last three years I’ve learned to bake challah bread. The field of psychology is important to because I hope to comprehend violence
During my sophomore year, I decided to sign up for the class "Intro the Counseling Psych." Little did I know this class was going to set me on a course that would change my high school career for the better. It has been two years since taking that class and I am now officially a high school student counselor. As a counselor, I have many opportunities to better my school community. One of such opportunities is taking part in putting together a high school camp. This camp is no ordinary camp though, this event is put on by the psych-social department and is meant to help students become comfortable with who they are. As a staffer, I spend three weeks prior to the camp, painting signs, preparing activities, and even finding costumes to get students
I am planning to complete a masters in counseling after I finish my undergraduate degree at Carlow University, so the exercise to research graduate schools was useful and timeous. I chose local schools as I have a family and will not be able to travel outside of Pittsburgh. Duquesne University’s graduate program is the first I looked into.
It is my strong desire to attend Fielding Graduate University APA (American Psychological Association) accredited doctoral program in clinical psychology. I have always been intrigued by the human mind for as long as I can remember, specifically the psychopathology of it. I truly enjoy conducting psychological research, learning about psychopathology and how to treat it. While conducting research and learning, it is important to remember that the purpose of psychology isn’t to predict a person’s thoughts, actions, and behaviors, but to understand them. There are dozens of events that occurred in my twenty-five years of life that led me to this meaningful choice of pursuing a doctorate. The two most significant events were when I was in the
I have always been thrilled by what goes around in people’s minds, but it was at the age of fifteen that I was first attracted to the field of psychology and particularly to clinical psychology. It was mainly because I read my favorite book When Nietzsche Wept by Irvin Yalom. This novel had a personal impact on me, as someone I know was dealing with depression, migraines, insecurities and suicidal tendencies same as happens so in the book’s characters.
What special personal qualities and experiences do you bring that might benefit you and your students in this work? While getting my undergraduate degree at BYU, I had the privilege to volunteer with children with disabilities. My time spent with them has prepared me for the demands of being a school psychologist. I have extensive knowledge of mental disabilities and illness, and I feel that this will help me to better speak the language of a school psychologist.
Who knew that my first day of junior year at Umatilla High School would evolve into what I am going to college for today? Everyone has that specific day or event that pulled strings at their heart and led them to decide what they want to do with their future. For me, it wasn’t just jumping on the bandwagon of becoming a doctor or a lawyer, but being surrounded by twenty mentally disabled students in my gym class that led me to decide that I want to get a doctorate in Child Psychology. A number of thoughts that I had beforehand about my career were headed in a completely different direction than being a psychologist (like Marine Biology, Photography, and even the Army). Knowing yourself is the most critical part when deciding your plan for your future, due to the fact that you need to know if you have the proper skills to perform your desired career.
Psychologists are very important people; they help millions of people with their everyday struggles and problems that they have to deal with. Not only do psychologists help people with problems that they cannot handle on their own, they also are scientists who study human minds and behaviors.
