The invaluable skills that I have gained and learned through my after school clubs, Future Business Leaders of America, (FBLA) and National Honor Society( NHS), has stirred up a desire in me to help my community and to make a difference in the lives of people, by majoring in the Public Health field. Through Public Health, I will help those in my community at large to live healthy lives; mentally, socially, physically and culturally. Healthcare is an essential need in life and is a great field that would allow me to make a difference.
The healthcare sector offers a variety of professional opportunities that include pediatric, geriatrics, public policy and many other areas in which I hope to make a impact towards. I have always been intrigued by medicine and continue to gain more interest in public health. In the future, I desire to combine both medicine and public health by participating in an MD and MPH program. My experiences and education provide me with constant motivation in achieving my goals.
While interacting with current medical students pursuing the MD/MPH dual degree at a UTHSCSA student panel, I realized that obtaining an MPH would align greatly with my interests and career goals, allowing me to expand the scope of my medical education and enhance my critical thinking skills. I enjoy how public health combines various aspects needed to treat disease and improve health outcomes, and I know that integrating the MPH core concepts with my medical degree, will help me to become a well-rounded and better physician who approaches healthcare through both an individual and population-based perspective. An education in public health will provide me with various opportunities ranging from the creation and development of community health projects, to contributing to the modification of current health policies. I will seize the opportunity to work with professionals from all occupations including educators, clinicians, executives, and I will become an advocate and a credible voice for positive change through a better understanding of the healthcare system that is in place
Obtaining a degree is my way to change that, and guarantee a future in which I will be able to independently raise and provide for my son. A degree in healthcare management is a stepping-stone to a diverse array of opportunities. Healthcare is an expanding field, and explicitly, healthcare management is growing faster than average.
I am applying to the MD/MPH program after experiencing four years of undergraduate coursework to receive a degree in public health. The coursework as an undergraduate greatly drew my interest to things such as epidemiology, microbiology, environmental health, and global health. I was introduced to the importance of population health and preventative care, as well as the social aspects of health and the disparities stratified across populations. I believe that the rigorous undergraduate coursework I completed exemplifies my competence in terms of public health and suitability as a candidate for an MPH. I also had opportunities to have real-world experience related to public health, more specifically I have worked as an infectious epidemiology
We as a class were given a variety of health subjects to choose from to undertake a research project that counted as a huge part of our grades. I picked the study of epidemiology to be the area I would focus on extensively for the next three months of that semester. This obviously meant that I had to read and learn a couple of books to get a clear idea of how I was going to present my idea and findings. As I read through some of these books, I really became intrigued. The aspects of global health issues, biostatistics and health policies to name a few really jolted me into considering this area of study as a potential future career choice, as oppose as to just a research project. I was really fascinated as I read and came across the range of issues that public health officials such as epidemiologists had to solve or were in the process of solving in inventive ways. I obtained a crucial but very methodical understanding of the very issues that is being faced in the world of health care today. Ever since this class came and went, I have been highly focused on public health issues through other classes and
Seeking an MPH was an invaluable opportunity for me to grow as a health professional. In addition to learning about an important approach to disease management and population wellness, it confirmed to me that I wanted to expand the scope of my work beyond dentistry. I knew that gaining a medical degree would help me to become a better public health professional. I also knew that my knowledge of public health would make me a better physician, and many of my professors served as excellent career role models. As I had the opportunity to work with them in conducting health research, I knew that I had made the right choice to seek an MPH. In the end, I successfully
From Vicki Kistler’s talk, I learned that Public Health overlaps with a lot of Health Science majors. Some majors that involve Public Health are IT, Pre-med, and undecided (basic science classes). The goal of Public Health is to respond, present, and help people live happy and healthy lives. Public Health also isn’t one major or discipline, it’s a philosophy. Some careers in the Public Health field are adoption, reducing mortality for infants, and being a lawyer who supports the Public Health Law. There are 48 health instructors out of 50 and there also isn’t a Public Health department in every county of Pennsylvania. In Allentown, there are two categories of Public Health: Personal (based on personal aspects/preferences) and Environment
In order to achieve this “next step” of getting a masters degree in public health from Liberty University online, I will needs several skills including organization, good work ethic, professionalism, the ability to communicate both orally and through writing, relational abilities, and a background knowledge of the sciences. I have always had the ability to stay organized and work diligently. As I go into my senior year of college, graduate with my bachelors and enter into the work place (I plan to work through graduate school), I hope to develop professionalism and continue to improve on my verbal and written communication skills. When I finish my graduate program, I hope to work at a job where I can interact with people and build relationships
I think you might be right that in future, people who obtain a career in public health may need to hold certification or license with a degree to go in to any of these career fields: public health nurses, biostaticians, epidemiologists, engineers, layers and microbiologists. I think if people are required to hold certification and license mean just more education and more knowledge of your career, but I still think having a master degree exerts what knowledge you have as well. What are your thoughts with having to need a certification or license if it happens in the future with your career choice?
A famous epidemiologist once said “Epidemiologist is like a bikini: what is revealed is interesting; what is concealed is crucial” (Duesberg). Epidemiology is the study of diseases and informs the public about health epidemics and new health standards put in place. A typical day for an epidemiologist is as follows: they usually work in laboratories, businesses, and offices where they discover many diseases and conduct research while also finding cures for new malignant diseases. Epidemiologist also focuses on medicine for example, they create new antibiotics for vicious diseases or create vaccines to help combat diseases. In order to become an epidemiologist, it would take 4 years as an undergraduate and obtain a Masters in Biology or Public Health. During high school, it is required to take 1 year of Biology and Chemistry or to obtain some kind of science background in order to help me get better prepared. In this paper, I will argue why I selected to pursue a career as an Epidemiologist based on prior knowledge and interest in public health & Biology, health epidemics and experiments/case studies.
My interest for public health stems from the need to aid numerous people in disease and injury prevention, health protection, and strategies for health promotion. I hope to earn a Master of Public Health with a focus in the area of health care management as well as hospital administration in relation to public health policy development and education. I aspire to develop enhanced intervention policies that can provide the population with direct access to primary health care due to public health preparedness education and strategic planning.
After finishing my Undergraduate, I have seen it wise to purse masters in public health, an area that I have much interest in. Having pursed a Bachelor of Science, Biological Sciences, minor in psychology, expanding my knowledge in the field of public health has been my next option. The vast knowledge that I have gained learning and working can help me while pursuing this program. Given the chance I would be able to fulfill my career goals.
I was drawn to the idea of not only focusing on one-on-one patient care that doctors provide, but also solving problems that affect the health of entire populations. The study of disease and health within populations; for instance, preventing disease, promoting health, and reducing health problems between groups are the main reasons I want to pursue an M.P.H focusing on epidemiology. These are my strongest interests because I believe they are important in improving our world’s health.
Most SOPH in the UK are organized around the themes of capacity building, multidisciplinary approach, balanced teaching and research. Information is dissipated in traditional class room setting, either as full-time 12 month programmes, or as part-time 24-60 months programmes.(7) Some SOPH have adopted more technologically advanced means of education delivery, utilizing electronic means to provide distance learning facilities, especially for international students who may not be able to afford the cost of living in the UK. The curriculum of most courses in public health conventionally includes subject such as epidemiology, health policy, health promotion, health management, environmental health, human biology and health economics.(6,8,9) Currently however, the scope has been expanded to include courses involving statistical analysis and the use of computer programmes; the ability to access, manage and work with information; the ability to present and disseminate information in an effective manner; interview and
