One public health problem is carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. CO is a gas that has no odor nor color and can lead to sudden sickness or mortality (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 2011). CO is formed whenever fossil fuel is burned in in an automobile, generator, furnace, grill, or anywhere else (CDC, 2011). As a result, the CO emitted from these sources may build up in spaces that are closed off or semi-closed. Consequently, those individuals, as well as animals, found in these locations become poisoned from the emission (CDC, 2011). Therefore, there are number of leading stakeholders involved with preventing this from happening. There are a number of stakeholders involved in the prevention of CO poisoning. Some of the key stakeholders involved in the prevention of CO poisoning includes group/organizations like the CDC, Underwriters Laboratories and the Consumer Products Safety Commission, Air Conditioning Contractors of America, and consumers (CDC, 2011). Each one plays a particular role in preventing CO poisoning. The CDC has several functions in preventing poisoning from CO. This would include surveillance, research, and education (CDC, 2011). The CDC provides monitoring, evaluations, and offers observation information in addition to working with nationwide information resources and partnering with states to increase surveillance of CO poisoning outside of mortality (CDC, 2011). In Shreveport, LA, many residents suffer from respiratory issues that they believe are caused by the local refinery, Calumet (Moskowitz). Residents have suffered for generations losing family members to cancer that they believe is brought on by pollution that the refinery emits. Some residents suffer lesser but chronic health issues ranging from minor respiratory issues like asthma to blood clots in their lungs. “Calumet denies that its refinery is the cause of any of these health issues” (Moskowitz). Many chemicals that are released by refineries can cause respiratory problems, cancer, nerve damage, and in some cases even death. There is no absolute way to be sure that all health problems happening near Calumet are caused by the pollution that it emits, but it could be a contributing factor in worsening symptoms. A resident of Marrero, LA, a town south of Norco refining, stated that they could not leave their house due to excess levels of pollution triggering asthma attacks (Ludwig). Sulfur dioxide is a known chemical that can trigger asthma attacks, it is also one of the many harmful chemicals that can be released by refineries (Sturgis). Refineries will measure levels of emissions when there is a chemical spill, so they know almost exactly how much pollution they have emitted. Minor incidents are not always reported or are under reported, but they can have the same damaging effects on the environment and the overall health of the community (Sturgis). “LABB’s reports confirms what workers and residents have known for years-petrochemical companies to often skirt the laws for reporting serious incidents”
Carbon monoxide is a potentially deadly gas emitted by gas burning appliances. Considering it is colorless, odorless and tasteless if a leak occurs only a carbon monoxide detector can alert you and your family to its presence in your home. Install the detectors near the bedrooms and at least one on each floor.
The city of Pekin has a history of very dangerous and unhealthy levels of air pollution caused by power plants and ethanol manufactures. “The Pekin area has the highest level of sulfur dioxide air pollution in the state, according to the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA), a level that now exceeds tightened federal standards” (Pekin has worst sulfur dioxide air pollution in state, 2011). This environmental issue has had great health effects on the Pekin community because of the mass quantity of sulfur dioxide pollutants in the air. “Exposure to sulfur dioxide, which is released when fossil fuels like coal and oil are burned, causes respiratory problems for children, the elderly and those with asthma or other respiratory illnesses, according to the IEPA. It narrows airways, leading to difficulty breathing” (Pekin has worst sulfur dioxide air pollution in state, 2011). In Superior Wisconsin, the CO alarm of a neighbor could have saved two people over the holiday season. Two individuals had been sickened as a result of carbon monoxide poisoning, and they had to be taken to the Superior hospital, where they had been listed as stable. When firefighters responded to the call about carbon monoxide, they learned of the deadly carbon monoxide levels inside the apartment building located on the 1500 block of Broadway.
In June 1999 a wave of illness broke out in Belgian’s children due to the consumption of Coca-Cola. It became so serious that some individuals had to be hospitalized. After this outbreak reached the news others in different towns began to experience the same dizziness, nausea and headaches that the first batch of victims reported experiencing. This outbreak caused Coca-Cola to partake in the most prevalent product recall they’ve ever had in their hundred and thirteen year lifetime. After some investigation is done they find that the source of all these hospitalizations is from contaminated carbon monoxide being dispersed into Coca-Cola’s beverages. However, with further research it’s found that with the amount of contamination in each beverage, there’s only enough to emit a foul rotten egg smell, one that one remind you of sulfur. In fact only four out of the five towns that experienced the bad Coke half of the kids didn’t even drink any Coke the day that they became ill-struck.
Air, is one of the most substantial source to mankind and our planet. While it exists, so does everything else along. However, in today’s epidemic, there has been certain factors that have increased in understanding whether the air we breathe today is healthy or not? Is it doing more harm than we thought? In other words, the health risks against air pollution have risen in the past few decades; all from what you may ask? Well, it could be for various factors and evaluations; either environmental or materialistic. Pollution is a major public health crisis in the world. (Friis, 2012). This is one of the conflicts that contribute to various aspects of an individual’s life, whether they may realize it or not. In this paper will include the sources that cause pollution with the effects it cause as well as policies on the regulation of air pollution.
Specific Purpose: To inform my audience how to become more aware of the dangers of carbon monoxide and how to prevent exposure.
The United States releases twenty tons of carbon monoxide per person per year. Carbon Monoxide release is a result of burning fossil fuels with an insufficient amount of oxygen that causes the formation of carbon monoxide that pollutes our environment. Everyday fuel is burnt by cars, airplanes, large factories and manufacturing plants. This is causing a very large and deadly problem for our environment. When gases used on earth are released into the atmosphere they act as a blanket and trap radiation that is then redirected to earth. This concept is called the Greenhouse Effect (Bad Greenhouse, 1).
Since the Industrial Revolution, there has been an increased presence of pollutants and carcinogens in the environment, specif-ically in urban areas.1 The presence of airborne pollutants can lead to an increase in allergic reactions and asthma rates. A common airborne pollutant is carbon monoxide (CO), which is commonly found in diesel exhaust. It is an odorless gas produced from me-thane and non-methane hydrocarbon oxidation.2 The toxic gas eliminates and takes the place of oxygen in the form of carboxy-hemoglobin when it binds to hemoglobin in red blood cells. It also affects the binding sites of heme groups, which complicates the transfer of oxygen to tissues.3 The majority of deaths from carbon monoxide poisoning is brought on from car exhaust.4 Between the years 1979 and 1988, 57% of deaths from carbon monoxide poi-soning were brought from car exhaust. There tend to be higher rates of carbon monoxide poisoning from car exhaust in northern regions, where temperatures are relatively low (Figure 1). 5
Air pollution levels have a large existence in big cities in Indonesia like Jakarta, Bandung, and so on. This problem happens because the number of motor vehicle use that is not limited [1]. Exhaust smog are the cause of air pollution which has the dangerous effects for people’s health. Exhaust smog is a result of burning fuel oil every motor vehicle. There are two types of burning fuel oil: the first is complete burning [2] and incomplete burning [3]. These types of burning have the differentiation in producing the remainder. Complete burning produces carbon dioxide as a result of remaining while incomplete burning produces carbon monoxide as a result of the rest. Carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide are gases that are harmful to people’s health and could decrease ozone layer [4] [5]. Exhaust smog is hazardous to people’s health. Exhaust smog is a result of burning fuel oil [6]. Consequently, exhaust smog has possibility to contain carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide gas. These harmful gases affect human respiration. Carbon monoxide makes the respiratory system becomes worse. Carbon monoxide will interfere with the process of hemoglobin in breathing [7]. As a result, people will not only feel lack of oxygen but also often feel dizzy and weak. In the other hand, carbon dioxide causes dizziness and fatigue to the sufferer [8].
