CHAPTER 1
1.1. INTODUCTION
“Education is the Most Powerful Weapon Which You Can Use to Change the World.” – Nelson Mandela.
We are living in a society influence by change. People’s way of living and thinking is shaped by technical, economical and social evolution. The globalized markets, the technical and technological revolutions are transforming the modern economy into a “knowledge based society” in which new ways of organizing the work are governing the world, demanding high performance technologies, solid knowledge and increasing responsibilities. For the future of society , education will play the key part in the way of life specific to this education and knowledge-based society. Introducing in the educational system of new learning and teaching techniques is a prerequisite of national cultural success, as much as it is also a prerequisite of economic competitiveness
Education is derived from word “Educare” ‘Educare’ is defined as “to develop the knowledge, skill, or character of individual” Thus, from these definitions, we can say that purpose of education is to develop the knowledge, skill, or character of students.
Now education has become a global concern. The world conference on ‘Education For All’ held in March, 1990 in Jomitien, Thailand adopted a declaration calling upon all member states and international agencies to take effective steps
There seems to be no perfect answer to the question, “What is the purpose of education?” Every expert and activist probably has a different answer. Martin Luther King said the purpose of education is to, “…enable a man to become more efficient, to achieve with increasing facility the legitimate goals of his life (King, 1947).” Eleanor Roosevelt argued that the purpose of education is good citizenship (Roosevelt, 1930). Others, like Newman (2006), posit that education is a much broader idea. It is the “entire process by which a culture transmits itself across a generation” (Newman, 2006). In trying to form my own idea of the purpose of education, I tried to look at all of these ideas
“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” These are words spoken by Nelson Mandela that I strongly agree with.
The Purpose of Education has been a very widely talked about subject within parents and students, but what really is the answer to this much asked question? I believe the purpose of education is to get useful personality traits through your experiences in school and to be morally ethical. In the article, “The Goal of Education is Becoming” , the author, Marc Prensky talks about his beliefs in education for our young children, “The real goal of education, and of school, is becoming—becoming a ‘good’ person and becoming a more capable person than when you started” (Prensky 3). The author clearly describes that the new generation has to “become” a better person than how they started and find who they really are. Additionally, the students can
“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world” Mandela, N (n.d.)
The revolutionary world has depended on education since the beginning of time. Education, as a key to all the developmental and advancing changes in the world, has as well taken a different dimension. Sir K. Robinson gave the speech in Youtube video updated on October 14th, 2010 in which RSAnimate video “Changing Paradigm”. Throughout his speech, he showed the world that to remain stable and sustainable, people must get the right education that will allow them to make the right decisions concerning the primary elements in the global settings. In his connection to his audience, he had given clear evidence of changing paradigms concerning the issues of education.
By the beginning of the second Millennium, many countries realized the need and necessity to cope up with the rest of the rapidly developing world. As they realized this necessity, they also realized that the key to growth and development is, indeed, education. As a result, many countries around the world entered the heated race of reforming their education systems hoping that this would ensure them a foothold in the modern world.
I feel that the goal of education is to open up a world of possibilities for learners. The purpose of education is to show someone that they have the ability to do and be whomever they want to. Education is simply there for bettering oneself and one’s world.
The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, illuminates the essential rights that all children have. According to the Convention, each child has the privilege of education, it is the state 's obligation to guarantee that essential education is free and necessary, to allow distinctive types of secondary training, including general and professional training and to make them open to each child and to make advanced education accessible (United Nations, 1990). But as indicated by UNICEF, an expected 93 million kids on the planet don 't get the chance to go to school, the majority whom are girls. A large part of these children are poor and their families can 't stand to send them to school. They should work to help their families survive. Others, for the most part, young girls don 't go to school since they need to help at home. However, without an education, children and families are forced to lead an existence in poverty (UNICEF, 2015).
“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world,” said Nelson Mandela.
To those who ask how education could possibly accomplish what decades of conflict could not, I say remember that there is no enmity significant enough to overpower enlightenment—the heart of fear is ignorance. Education must become the highest priority of government if we are to reap its tremendous dividends. There will be a marked reduction in crime when new opportunities replace old. The alleviation of poverty begins with the end of financial illiteracy, coming through proactive education. Perhaps the most immense is the profound unity that forms when students realize the importance of having a vision—without a vision, progress appears aimless. Equipped with education and a vision, cooler heads and open minds will
Nelson Mandela once said “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” Depending on how you use education, to help to world or to manipulate the world, it is a powerful weapon to be used. The global community has several issues and problems that need addressed and fixed, however, the lack of education and the misuse of education is a global issue in itself. Due to this lack of education or misuse of education, there are even more global issues as a result. According to Proverbs 18:21, “the tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.” Anyone can pick an issue in the world, but in order to make a real change that matters, the real trick is to be educated on an issue, become passionate about it, and turn that passion into a lesson for all.
Getting educated is very important for every person. It goes without saying that each of us has to have a proper education. We learn how to read, count and write. These are the basic abilities we acquire and use during our life. Is there any other purpose of education or it is aimed only at giving us a possibility to communicate our ideas and satisfy basic needs? During centuries, there were different interpretations of the purpose of education. Many scientists, pedagogues and philosophers tried to answer the question: what is the purpose of education? Taking into consideration the needs and tendencies of a modern society, we can assume that the purpose of education is to prepare students to be self-sufficient citizens capable of solving
The aim of education is the systematic process where an adult or child acquires knowledge, skills and understandings. Education is also to guide and enhance children into people which can contribute to society. All activities within education, in the fields of either Science, Mathematics or
It’s a universally accepted fact that education is the cornerstone of development, progress and all that sought after stuff. Unfortunately, we are slightly preoccupied; fighting the war on terror, and paying a huge price for it. Stats on the casualties we’ve incurred would agree; according the Institute of strategic studies; in terms of human losses more than 52,000 people, including civilians, personnel of law enforcement agencies, and troops have been killed in terrorist attacks from 2002-2013.
Education is now emerging as a recognised global industry, because education plays a major role in the economic development of any country. As this global industry continues to mature, many factors have combined to make this as a generation opportunity. As John Dewey who is known as the “father of progressive education” believes that “little democracy could create a more lovely society”. (Dewey:1916) further this report will talk about the emerging education industry with the help of key features, challenges with the interviewee comments followed by a conclusion.
