Although Lisa and her team of 6 staff are dedicated and committed to their work to deliver good quality services to their local community, their jobs are uncertain. Lisa faces dilemma and tough decisions to motivate her staff, who has already under achieving following these imminent financial difficulties. This is because the local authority is planning to cut funding cost. In this report, I will explain the conflicts that Lisa and her team face, the measures and possibilities that she may take to save their work at their Family First organization. I will identify, compare and discuss different motivational theories that may be useful to Lisa in order to manage her situation. Maslow’s, Herzberg ‘s and McCIland’s motivational theories will be considered. Will also compare this case study with my local Leonard Road Care Home in South Chingford, which was forced to close down due to funding cuts.
Some of the conflicts that Lisa may face
As an assistant director of the Family First organization, Lisa is supposed to maintain support and motivation to her staff in these uncertainty times. She must display her professional leadership skills without being biased to all her staff. Her decisions are expected to be firm but fair. She faces difficult choices to make sure that her agency does not lose its contract with the local authority. This is a very
There are many ways to define leadership, but perhaps the most laconic as well as accurate definition is presented in Peter G. Northouse's Leadership: Theory and Practice book (Northouse, 2013, p.5): "Leadership is a process whereby an individual influences a group of individuals to achieve a common goal". Individuals, engaged in leadership, use influence to solve challenges, which the groups under their leadership face, in order to succeed in their common goals.
Leadership can been described as a process of social influence in which a person can enlist the aid and support of others in the
Daft, R. L. (2011). Conventional leadership. In R. L. Daft, Leadership (p. 153 chapter 6).
The next individual who was identified as a leader was George Voskovec (Juror 11), the watchmaker. He displayed the characteristic of determination, forward-looking, emotional stability, and passion. He asked specific question he wanted answered and was driven to figure out the proper verdict, instead of settling for what everyone else said. He looked past the surface and dug deeper, looking for other outcomes and possibilities others were missing. Furthermore, he maintained his emotions through adverse situations when other jurors sarcastically poked at him about his manners, did not sink to their level and have an emotional response (Lumet, 1957). Moreover, after individuals began to switch votes because they wanted it to end sooner, he intensely
Developing a culture that values the principles of PCC will require a shift of power in practitioner and patient relations to a relationship that is more inclusive and equitable, where narrative and partnership have a stronger focus (Hughes et al, 2008). Moving from biomedical to biopsychosocial models of care will require significant changes in practitioner practice, beliefs and cultures (Bolster and Manias 2010). To facilitate this, explicit and consistent leadership, which actively responds to concerns and makes the case for change will be pivotal (Health Foundation, 2014b; Moore et al, 2016).
Identify and explain a workplace leadership and management role familiar to you. Describe how the role aligns with leadership theory.
1.) The concept that I have acquired and would like to discuss is the next generation of leaders. Times are changing for many organizations including a diverse population and a true global mindset. With these changes taking place there is a need for a new generation of leaders. A new order is in store and that brings about different approaches to leadership for many organizations. Women now hold a large percentage of leadership positions within organizations. This change provides diversity and a different approach to leadership than in the past. According to Senge, women tend to focus on longer term issues such as sustainability which is a total different systems thinking approach than men. The next generation of leadership will not have
The three leadership styles are democratic, transformation, and authoritarian leadership. Democratic leadership is a type of leadership style in which members of the group take more participative role in the decision-making process. According to ANA (2010), in democratic leadership, everyone is given the opportunity to participate, exchanged ideas freely, and encourage discussion. The three attributes that defines democratic leadership are collective decision-making, active members, and camaraderie. In transformation leadership, the leader is not limited by his or her followers?, therefore, the leader
Defining leadership and the qualities associated with leading is a frequently debated topic, with many theorists focusing on different areas that they consider are the most important or relevant to leadership. Leadership is an inherent requirement of all members of the Australian Defence Force (ADF). Furthermore, the development of leadership abilities is an individual journey; however, to better enhance this journey the basic leadership principles and behaviours need to be considered. Over the past the two years while studying at the Australian Defence Force Academy I have been able to reflect on my own leadership style and skills more than ever before. Having attended numerous leadership courses as part of my journey through the ranks there has only been limited time and opportunity for self-reflection. This reflective paper will outline some of the key concepts of leadership taught during the semester and how they have and do relate to my leadership skills and traits.
A leadership challenge identified in the story was communication challenges between team members. Nurse leaders may be frightened to stop practice which is not effective and may not know a way to drive forward that which is effective. As nurses who have worked in care for very long are often reluctant to change what they have always done (Andrews,2017).
Controlling is a part of management that is not considered to be as important. Like planning, it is a continual process; like organizing, it involves translation like leading, it involves diplomacy. Controlling is monitoring work progress to the company goals, and taking corrective action when required. (University of Wisconsin Whitewater, July 5, 2006, chap. 1)
Leadership and management are two notions that are often used interchangeably. However, these words actually describe two different concepts. The following report will discuss the differences and examine the roles and responsibilities of leaders in creating and maintaining a healthy organizational culture.
Nowadays, it is impractical to think of an organization without an effective leader, as well as an active manager. The two are much in common as they are essential in the organizational hierarchy, and they are crucial elements in running any business enterprise. However, there are several differences between the two terms.
How have you demonstrated leadership? A great question that requires thinking, and research. To understand how one demonstrates leadership, one must truly look within themselves, and understand what leadership is. Wikipedia defines leadership as "a process of social influence in which a person can enlist the aid and support of others in the accomplishment of a common task ", but true leadership is not simply its definition. It is not bossing a group of others around, however more about influencing others; showing Empathy, dedication, and Sincerity. An effective leader remains humble and strong at the same time, teach and learn at the same time, give credit to his followers and command respect at the same time. Learning this created other questions, how can one show the form of leadership described? How has my past reflected this definition? And have I truly displayed leadership in my past? Once my research was complete, I looked within myself. I realized that I have demonstrated leadership in numerous times in my life, especially at work, at school, and within my family.
Leadership plays an important role in organizational life and ultimately makes the difference between an effective and ineffective organization (McSweeney-Field & Oetjen, 2012). Each facility used different styles of leadership that contributed to the results of their study. In this scenario, the leaders in Facility B decided to use a democratic style of leadership. The utilization of this form of leadership allowed for the employees to work in a stress-free environment. With this type of leadership, it created a relationship between the employees and management that allowed for them to realize the importance of their roles in patient care. When the leadership and facility owners appreciate the staff and provide an environment for them to be happy, it also allows the staff to pass that happy energy onto to the patients/residents.
