Recommendations On Improving My Own Interpersonal and Communicational Skills

Based on the positive and negative skills I learned in our group discussion, first, I decided to action plan to develop my skills in communication by, reading books about good communication skills. I think clarifying my objectives and finding common grounds are important for me to improve my communication (Baker, 2013). In other words, explaining what is the purpose of the conversation and building a good rapport with the other person while communicating. Therefore, I decided to find a way to reduce my fear and anxiety and talk confidently with my mentor, service users and other professionals, while I am out for placement (Rhodes, 2013).

Many people are not aware of the communication skills that they lack, most will argue that they have perfect communication skills. Taking interpersonal communication has taught me that my skills are very poor. I walked in thinking there was nothing I can learn about communication and realized that I know little to nothing about communication. Since starting this class I’ve narrowed the skills I need to work on to the following four which includes listening, being more supportive and active, understanding, and improving my self concept. Although all four of these skills are something I can improve I think listening is my main problem.

Therefore, interpersonal skills with communication can help me be more successful as a manager and improve my working relationships with staff and partner agencies. The way I communicate with other people improves confidence, enhances my relationships with others thereby improving my effectiveness in the workplace.

In every aspect of our daily lives, we need interpersonal skills to communicate and interact with others efficiently. Individuals with excellent interpersonal skills often collaborate well in teams or groups and with other individuals more generally. When interacting with others, interpersonal skills come naturally, yet in some situations, it can also be challenging to communicate with others. According to **** “Through awareness of how you interact with others, and with practice, you can improve your interpersonal skills” (p. ). Therefore, it is vital that individuals occasionally evaluate their communication skills to ensure that they are communicating in writing or speaking effectively. On the Internet, there are multiple communication self-assessment tools to help individuals discover their communication skills strengths and weaknesses, and overall, determine if they are communicating effectively. Describe the assessment you used to analyze your skills.

With everything that we have studied during this class, I found that keeping an open mind and thinking outside the box is the easiest way to approach certain situations that require a special need for communication skills. "Although, our communication skills will always change throughout our lives because of our constantly changing self-concept and perceptions. I have been using strategies like actively listening and proper assessments, as a way to achieve a flexible style effectively communicating. To me, good communication skills with a positive attitude open the doors to a successful career that is beneficial to any organization, but more importantly a way of knowing and understanding those around you.

1A. My interpersonal communication goal that I want to improve is, learning how to start a conversation with strangers. My daily routine/tasks are repeatable. My days consist of taking the two older kids to school, cooking, doing chores around the house, and taking care of my youngest. My youngest child is not in daycare. She definitely knows how to keep me busy throughout the day when she’s not sleeping. Being a stay at home mom, I don’t really get the chance to socialize or speak to strangers on a regular basis. In addition, I love to hibernate and stay home during the winter.

I believe that one skill which I have which I am strong at is my communication skills. This is because I am comfortable talking to new people and expressing new thoughts and ideas.

By the time that I am working as a nurse, I plan to improve my communication skills by taking classes in college that focus on each skill. One example of a class like this is Public Speaking. Over time, my writing skills will improve as a result of writing multiple essays in my various classes. With every essay that I write, I will learn from my mistakes and not make the mistake the next time. Another skill that I can improve is listening. I can improve this skill by taking notes when a person is speaking to me; therefore I will not forget what they told me. I can also improve my listening skills by paying more attention to the speaker when they are talking. I can improve my listening skills anywhere, anytime, with anyone who is speaking. Despite connecting with the company, I believe that I can improve my communication skills. I found that if I did not speak with some form of credibility my ideas would not seriously be considered. In addition having better communication with my group outside of meeting would of helped. I feel that if I reached out more often, other than when meeting were required, I would have been able to create a stronger connection with my group. This is important because the chemistry of the group is what will determine the route of the project. I also can improve my ability to trust others. About the people skills part, I think I am mostly true on other people describe me as very good with people and I frequently smile and laugh with teammates or classmates. Because I like to help people and if I can be helpful, it makes me happy.
