Overall, this class has taught me a lot. It has pushed and stretched my writing abilities to the limit, and has helped me grow as a writer. I was able to learn how to construct a strong, valid thesis, do extensive research on a topic, and do a deep analysis on different material. Although this course was a bit tricky for me because I do not care for writing, I feel that this course will help me conquer my writing endeavors in the future. This course was a huge leap from what I learned in high school. One of the main differences was the types of papers I wrote. In high school, most of the papers I wrote were creative or written in first person. In college, all of the papers were analytical, structured, and in third person. Another big difference is the types of sources I used. Previously I was able to use simple, trusted websites as sources, but now I am using scholarly sources like the databases provided by Loras. My high school papers were also about three pages at max, while all of my college papers are at least three pages. Overall, I think my high school should have done a better job at preparing me for college writing. Some ways in which they could have accomplished this is by giving the students more critical research papers and making us analyse text more thoroughly. Although there was some difficulty transitioning to college writing, I didn’t have too much of a problem adapting. One of the most relevant papers I wrote was “Quantum Computers: The Future of Computing”, which is included in this portfolio. This paper was relevant because I got to write a long, in-depth paper about material I am interested in and it pertains to my major, Computer Science. I found that being interested in the topic you are writing about can have a great impact on how you approach your research. When you are more interested in the research, you are more likely to be able to understand what it is saying, and you are able to create more ideas out of it. When I wrote “‘The Garden Party’: The Wealthy, Their Conflicts, and Their Ignorance”, which is also included in the portfolio, I found the research harder, because I’m not that interested in literature as opposed to technology. Even though I was able to easily digest the
I have written more in the past year in this course than I probably wrote throughout high school career. This class made me notice that prewriting really does make a difference in the end result as well as having a peer critique your paper. Instead of writing a quick paper and just handing it in, I was actually forced to take the time out to write a rough draft, read my own work out loud, and revise my work. It helped me make my writing more organized and have a better flow throughout my paper In the future, I will continue to use this method as well as visit the many resource we have on campus that can give feedback what can make my paper better or just checking for grammar errors, spell check, and sentence fragments.
Prior to taking First Year Writing, my main approach to writing stood on the principles of a constant formalness, persuasiveness, and providing context. Often too much context. I believe this was primarily due to most of my prior academic writing prior was solely consisted of argumentative writing, which I see as a pro and con. The good thing is that I knew how to make debatable thesis, but not with much use of all of the rhetorical appeal of pathos. Now I believe I approach writing in a much more open way, in the sense that I believe that I am much more versed in writing for academia both formally and informally.
This course was comprised of many learning activities; each was designed to help me achieve the course learning outcomes. I have taken two college English classes in the past; however, it has been several years since my last college class. I have some experience in writing and this class definitely helped me get back into writing. I often have trouble brainstorming and capturing the subject I need to write about. This class definitely helped me overcome the challenges I faced in writing and being able to effectively express my ideas in a clear and concise manner. Not to mention, it definitely helped build my writing foundation through a step by step approach to each assignment. Therefore, this class bolstered my writing and communication skills.
Throughout the course of this semester, I have learned so much about writing. I used to think writing was my best skill in terms of school, but after taking this course, I realized I have a lot to learn still. In high school English was always my highest grade because of my writing, my writing in my SAT scores was always the highest, and last semester in ENGL 1301, I got a high A in the course. But this course has challenged me as a writer to think outside of the box and be more academically smarter in terms of writing. The journals have helped me write about things that we like more than the other assignments because it gives us more freedom and flexibility about what we can write about. These journals are being used as a tool as practice
Over the semester I have been challenged and intrigued over and over by the content of this course and the professor, who thought I could develop a fairly strong paper if it was not for all my grammatical errors. It has been a very enlightening and enthralling experience that has taught me a new way to write a paper. In high school there was only one way to write and that was it. I think that this class is a great way for students to think out of the box, rather than having to be stuck. It allows them to write more freely about a subject, and I am very thankful for that. I have learned many new skills and improved the skills I already
I am a better writer now because this class taught me to consider the readers of a document before you even start writing it. I usually just jump into writing a paper and do not consider who will be reading it. Taking the time to figure out who the readers of the document will be and considering their wants and needs was a new idea for me. This concept has helped my writing become more reader-friendly and also helps me focus my ideas before I even
After taking this course, I look back at the writer that I was at the beginning of the course compared to the end. I have changed significantly as a writer. I am able to look at different writing assignments and determine that each assignment is unique. Meaning, not all writing assignments can be composed or formatted the same. I have instilled in myself that you do not have to write the way the textbook teaches. The freedom to write in your own fashion and still successfully complete the assignment makes someone a good writer and produces good writing.
When I knew that one of my classes would be a writing course I must admit it was reason for some concern. I recently finished my Bachelor’s degree and had to write many papers. Every word of every paper was a struggle. As I looked through this course I am certain it will be invaluable to meet my goals.
Throughout this course we have done three sets of revision with our essays and learned a lot of skill to make our writing better and more professional. In general, I do not think I am a bad writer, but this class has taught me techniques that I can take with me as I advance into my college career.
I have many expectations for this course. I hope to gain more confidence and proficiency in my vocabulary, propositional phases and structure of my writing. Writing is natural to me but I have trouble with the structure of my essays. Am I staying on topic? Did I convey my message? These are just some of the questions I ask myself during my writing. If I can learn to deliver a message to my audience by engaging with excitement, I will be ecstatic. This is my 4th semester in Hillsborough community College. During my duration in HCC; almost all my classes have been online. My time management is pretty well structured. I work during the daytime and complete course loads on the weekend. However, this semester; I need to strategize because I’m taking
I have learned much from this course and I truly believe that I will take much of this information into my future in education. I learned so much about not only how to write in general, but more specifically my writing too. I think that the greatest factor about my writing that I realized I need to work on is preciseness. I have realized that my writing can be “beating around the bush”, and instead of making a paragraph too wordy, I should just get to the point and then analyze. I learned that a beneficial writing strategy can be overviewing the topic briefly, stating the argument, and then using supporting details like quotes and examples that back up the original argument.
As a writer, my skills have improved through taking this course. I have developed the ability to organize and plan the specifics of my novel by breaking each aspect into parts. I learned more about the importance of writing with the reader in mind, and how to do so. The most significant skill I developed through this class, though, is making realistic characters with quirks and unique personalities.
Learning from Indroduction to University Writing, sounds like it is a lot of work. Since I have been out of school for a real long time. It is an interesting, and challenging class.
Overall, I am enjoying the relaxing atmosphere in this class. When I entered this class, my writing was too unorganized and have many grammar problems, but I am happy to point out my mistakes, in order to improve this aspect of my writing. And the reading of this course gave me something to think about my own life, how I should engage in oral conversations with others and how to shape my thoughts and opinions. This course is a very helpful experience to improve writing skills, and I also learned some valuable tools, based on what we did read, how to form my opinion in the future.
Overall this class has allowed me to grow as a writer. A strength that I have learned in this class is that I can write a pretty decent college paper. My ability to revise, edit, and proofread papers is better than what I was led to believe in high school. Another strength of mine is that I can think pretty creatively.
