This assignment asks for “one particular memorable classroom or school situation when you were a student that if you had been the teacher, you would have handled differently. As the teacher in that setting, how would you have brought resolution to the conflict?” I decided to approach this assignment with some liberties of a self-reflection of my own personal classroom management as a substitute teacher this previous Tuesday, October 31, 2017, in singular 9th grade Algebra class in which authority I exhibited was less than admirable in which I will use the material in the reading to criticize what I did wrong and what I could have done differently.
On Tuesday, October 31, 2017, was my second day of substitute guest teaching in which this

With a 35% pass-rate, I did not expect too much participation from the class. The first thing was a warm-up in which instead of students volunteering to come up to the board, there were a set of popsicles sticks with students’ names and I chose at random for the students to come up to the board and work on a problem. But of course, I had students reluctant even if their names were chosen. After the warm-up, the students were to work on an assignment that I handed out for 40-45 minutes. Plenty of the students did not even attempt the assignment and would have to finish it for homework (but I doubt they did). Most students just talked and messed with their phones for the time given to them for work. While I can give them work to do, I cannot force them to do it. So as long as they are not injuring each other and destroying school property, I do not care what they do. This is not a positive attitude to have, but it is the best course of action when it comes to one-day substitutes. There were students who tried to make effort of the assignment and I was there to assist; hopefully they learned something from the short time I could help. Next, the students were to take 5-10 minutes for a practice test in which the material was just from the assignment so if the students made effort on the assignment and asked questions,
In order to be proficient in the art of teaching a teacher is required to do much more than walk into a classroom, walk up to the board, and begin to teach. Presenting a lesson is only one step when it comes to having a productive classroom. The state in which the children are in has a direct effect on the productivity of the classroom. The productivity has a direct relation to the classroom management set in place by the teacher. Throughout history there have been many theories regarding how to exhibit successful classroom management. One theorist in particular is Harry Wong. This paper is going to cover the thoughts and theories of Harry Wong on classroom management.
The most important factor affecting student learning is the teacher. If the teacher is ineffective, students will achieve inadequate progress academically. Effective teaching and learning cannot take place in a poorly managed classroom. If students are disorderly and disrespectful, with no apparent rules and procedures to guide behavior, chaos becomes the norm. Teachers struggle to teach, and students will learn much less than they should. http://behaviourmanagementreport.weebly.com/
Being a male going into the elementary school education profession, I feel that I can be a postitive male role model for students who might lack that kind of male role model leadership needs. One of the first things that I will convey to my students is my philosophy on classroom management. My philosophy can be summed up in just two words: RESPECT and LEADERSHIP.
Day one at Anne Hutchison Elementary School, I observed Ms. Biondi’s second grade classroom. The day started off by the teacher taking attendance, doing the pledge of allegiance, lunch count, collect homework, and pretty much getting all of the kids organized. After, the students were settled in the teacher started the class with a review of the spelling
Thank you for being my substitute today. Make sure that students are sitting in their assigned seats and take attendance for every period and turn it into the office. If you have any problems do not hesitate to call the front office at *500 and have the student removed. Let me know what happened so I can take care of it on Friday when I return.
The day started off fairly well. Hatfield hadn’t told his students I was going to be observing, and thus they assumed I was his daughter or a substitute teacher. After giving the students their bellwork, he quickly dove into the lesson. Hatfield had taken a day leave the day before, so the classroom was a bit scrambled with what they did with their substitute. It was an interactive day with videos, discussions, and written work. The good thing was that he really seemed to love what he was doing and could keep the students under his reigns fairly well. There were some attitudes from some of the students that he dismissed with ease and it was palpable that he had been doing this for years.
When I arrived at Frontenac High School today for my internship, I found out that Mr. Buzard was sick. He had left the substitute teacher with what the students should be working on for the class. I was able to help the students with their assignment today. It was the first day that I have actually felt like a teacher.
I believe classroom management is extremely significant for teachers and effective teachers know how to manage the classroom while helping students to behave appropriately. In order to be an effective ESL teacher, I will use demonstrating expectations, creating a safe learning environment, building a positive relationship, redirecting inappropriate behavior, and motivating in managing my future classroom.
This allowed the students to not be aware that administration had been notify and was in route to that classroom to remove the students and talk about what was going on and the best way to deal with the conflict. One of the key areas my collaborating teacher was part of as her role as the department lead was serving on data assessment team. Based on the findings and work she had completed within the data assessment group the History department had clear guidelines and expectations of the types of materials and content to cover within their classrooms. Laster High School has built based on the data they have collected customized study aids for students preparing for the AP and EOC/milestone tests that occur each year. Based on all the resources that the school had developed and is currently utilizing students have the ability to succeed within the classroom and outside of the classroom when preparing themselves. As a future teacher, I believe it will be important to my success to identify current programs that the school is already utilizing while learning how to develop programs based on the local data and collaborative resources within the
In the morning, I sat in on Mrs. Young’s early elementary special education classroom. There were only four students in this classroom, each of varying ability levels. One student had pretty severe needs; he used a wheelchair, walker, and stander. Along with that, he had some difficulty with communication, but he could read and say basic words. The other three students were in and out of the classroom and worked mostly on reading and writing. During the time I was there, I felt that there was a little confusion about what was happening because Mrs. Young was gone and one of the paras had only been working at Centennial Elementary for two days. The substitute teacher and each of the paras all did a great job of working together to keep things in line to ensure that the day went as smoothly as possible. I feel that I gained so much insight from observing the students learn in this environment. I was intrigued by
Although I enjoyed the novel Lord of the Flies, I don’t completely agree with the author’s sentiment that if left along, people would grow to become brutish, selfish, and unruly. And although I do believe that human beings need some sort of social structure or guidelines because we are social animals, I whole heartedly believe that human are basically good and that if let to develop in a nurturing environment, we would grow into self-responsible and noble creatures. I believe that acts such as selfishness are definitely learned behaviors. Therefore, I think as my approach to classroom management, I would adopt the approach of a “nurturing” supporter. I believe the role of teacher is someone
Classroom management is a popular topic in education. Teachers are always looking for ways to improve their classroom environment, or new ways to deal with problem behaviors. For every person who has ever worked with children, there is an idea, a theory, as to how to best meet children’s needs. Early theorists provide the basis for many current behavior management ideas, and often include a combination of ideas. Theorists such as Abraham Maslow, Rudolf Dreikurs, William Glasser, and Stanley Coppersmith offer insight into the behavior and motivations of children that help teachers design strategies to prevent disruption and provide a positive learning environment for all students.
As a teacher my goal is to challenge students, cover the required curriculum and provide them with the necessary support and resources that will enable them to achieve to their best potential. My primary responsibility is to promote students’ social, emotional, intellectual and physical development as they learn. I believe that prevention of inappropriate behaviour needs to be applied within the classroom to enable students to be actively engaged with their learning. Thus, teaching young minds is a role which I believe is full of challenges, responsibilities and immense satisfaction.
Once again, my student teaching time has given me new challenges that I had not encountered to this point. As students have become more comfortable with me as their teacher, their behavior has slightly changed and is no longer the quiet, hesitant students that I had started with. It is nice to have them now willing to participate but they are beginning to blurt out answers and not properly raise their hands. It is these minor things that they are starting to neglect to do and causing slight problems with classroom management. Even though these problems do occasionally bubble up it provides me with the chance to use some of my classroom management skills that I have not been able to work on.
As I spend more time in the classroom each week, I find myself realizing more and more about my personal feelings on classroom management. When I compare my opinions and feelings on classroom management, I see connections between my beliefs and those represented by all three of the behavioral theorists we have been studying; Lee Canter, Linda Albert, and Alfie Kohn. While each of these theorists have varying opinions on how to manage students, I feel that they all have important points that should be included in a successful classroom management plan.
