“NYU Langone Medical Center is ranked No. 10 in the nation on US News & World Report’s Best Hospitals 2016-2017 Honor Roll, the medical center’s highest national ranking received to date from the publication. Additionally, for the fifth year in a row, NYU Langone ranked No. 2 in New York State and No. 2 in the New York metro area” (1). I joined finance department at Ambulatory Care Center on August 8th last year. Working as a business associate, I’ve observed and mastered different techniques how to work efficiently as an individual and as a part of a team. For a better efficiency, managers should pay attention to employee’s personal characteristics before creating the teams. “Team players should have a few things in common: good communication skills, high emotional intelligence, and an ability to work independently” (2). Another challenge is size, research shows that “team members reduce effort when they feel responsible for output” (2). In order to achieve project goals, team members should be brought together for face to face meetings and then broke the group into smaller constituencies “to brainstorm short-term wins” (2). Different questions should be asked to help determine the most beneficial structure of a group or team: “What are we trying to accomplish? What needs to be done? Who should do what? How should we make decisions? Who is in charge? How do we coordinate efforts? What do individual members care about most: time, quality, participation? What are the special skills and talents of each group member? What is the relationship between this group and others? How will we determine success?” (3). Bolman and Deal illustrated a few design options of the team configurations. “These basic patterns are too simple to apply to larger, more complex systems, but they help illustrate how different structural forms respond to a variety of challenges” (3). Dual Authority design of team configuration represents hierarchy in my teamwork. We have management level below the boss; two individuals - manager and supervisor
