Parenting is a process of supporting children through the rigors of life. From infancy to adulthood, parents play an important role in the development of their children. They are expected to ensure the child’s health and safety, prepare them to function as citizens of society, and to teach them about what is important in life. Many parents learn how to parent by recalling the way they were raised. However, with the stresses and strains that families face today, it is also a good idea to be open to adding parenting tools to their toolbox, which can give them more confidence in their roles. It allowed me to revisit my direct service roots. I was concerned about a disparity and a disproportionate number of Blacks, other people of color, and the poor that have been incarcerated and are on death row. Ex-offenders are some of the most vulnerable in America because of the stigma attached to their criminal behaviors and histories. Still, they have served their “time” and need to be productive members of society, being able to effectively parent their children. This class gave me an opportunity to grow and develop in my field and see how people are more alike than different, despite their circumstances. In the first session, I stated that parents needed to use the tool of their presence in their child’s life. They needed to be more connected, despite all the struggles and chaos of living. I mentioned a quote: “Our children want more than presents, they want our presence ( ).” Children want their parents in their lives. In addition, both child and parent needed to get sufficient sleep, which enabled them to function better. When people are sleep deprived, they do not perform as well and were likely to be tired and irritable ( ). Waiting until the weekend or a day off from regular activities to catch up on sleep did not work. They were not able to replenish the sleep that they lost. Also, cell phones needed a break. Constantly being attached to cell phones hinders people’s abilities to interact. Parents
