In part one of "They Say, I Say (TSIS)," and chapter 8 of "Writing Research Papers (WRP)," the general theme is how to properly use another's work to formulate and augment your work. I have found that the most difficult part of writing research papers is utilizing quotes and summaries to enhance my arguments in papers. It is difficult for me because I often misuse quotes and even summarize the wrong things. Consequently, I confuse my audience, and weaken my argument. In chapter one of "TSIS," the authors use a story to illustrate to the audience that the most important thing for a writer to have is a point. This coincides with misusing quotes and summaries because they take away from the "point" of a statement, paragraph, or paper. I have found
The Norton Field Guide to Writing covers topics about writing and composing. Several of which I was already familiar with. In chapter 2, Bullock and Weinberg express how “Many readers find it helps to annotate as they read…” (16). I have become very familiar with annotating over the years. When first brainstorming what topic I was going to pick for each annotated bibliography, it took me a while before I settled on a topic for each essay. The art of quoting and summarizing an argument is one of the main skills to acquire when it comes to writing a successful piece of work. In the book, They Say I Say the art of inserting quotations is mentioned to be one of the highest mistakes made by writers. Many insert a quote that has no frame of introduction or background information which is considered a “hit and run quote.” Readers need to be able to comprehend not only the writings, but the background information and quotes from another author writing in order to have the whole work cohesive. Dire necessity for the writer is to go back to the initial text and truly understand the background from which they are quoting to make sure their audience understands the quote and why

Rhetorical reading and writing refers to all the skills a writer or speaker might use to influence readers or listeners and adjust their understanding of a subject. Rhetorical writing contains judgements, evaluations, agreements, disagreements, doubts, and criticisms. I have learned that when the reader is engaged they look for rhetorical strategies that the writer uses to make their point. Therefore, after the reader reads the source a person can summarize and paraphrase the source. Summarizing helps make sure an individual understands the main idea and paraphrasing helps someone put the author's argument into their own words. Some tips I’ve used to identify the structures of the text is to pay attention to the title, skim the text before

Throughout the entirety of my high school career, I have always gravitated towards math and sciences. I enjoyed them predominately due to my proficiency in the subjects, as opposed to a natural interest in the studies. During my senior year, I began to enjoy reading more so than my previous years. I had read all of the Harry Potter books as a small child, but that was the extent of my literary background up until that year. That year, I watched the show Game of Thrones on HBO for the first time. I watched all seasons that were out at the time, and when I wanted more I decided to delve into the books. This opened up my horizons to the world of literature. I began reading more and more, gravitating towards authors like Stephen King and Harlan
