COMM101 Reflective Paper- My top 10 takeaways from COMM101
Coming into UBC I had no idea of what to expect from the capstone course of Sauder. On the first day, Jeff said that everything would connect in the end; I didn’t realize how true that is until now. He meant that every bit and piece in the course was literally interconnected with not just class concepts but to the entire business world. Throughout the term, I not only learned about business fundamentals, but life and people skills as well. Presenting ideas, pitching, teamwork and just making an argument in general were simple yet essential skills that I picked up and refined. Getting a feel for all the different disciplines Sauder has to offer was a given, but processing those soft kills were my biggest takeaway yet. Honestly speaking, coming into Sauder, I was sure about business as a career. However, I always had an interest in political science at the back of my mind. Leaving this course, I now know that a career in both is something definitely achievable. With the numerous guest speakers as well as the US election that happened simultaneously throughout the term I learned that business and politics could be blended into a diverse field of opportunities; given that I put in more than I expect and work hard.
TOOLKIT
Building my business toolkit throughout the term was fascinating. I was initially skeptical that the toolkit we learned in class could be applicable to businesses of all sizes, from real corporations
The Norton Field Guide to Writing covers topics about writing and composing. Several of which I was already familiar with. In chapter 2, Bullock and Weinberg express how “Many readers find it helps to annotate as they read…” (16). I have become very familiar with annotating over the years. I often use this writing method to help me understand and summarize text I come across.
At first I was not sure what I should put, but then when I starting thinking about it, it came pretty easily. However I did have a difficult time thinking about what I can’t change because I try not to focus on that.
Based on this knowledge and what I learned, I feel that I definitely have demonstrated adaptability in the program already. I have increased in my competencies for basic success in program completion.. I have certainly increased may basic abilities to be able to compile a project plan with all the components involved such as the business plan, stakeholder analysis, charter, ect.. Many of these areas, I had never heard of, much less thought about or written. I feel confident today, due to this course, I could effectively write a business plan and assist with execution of projects. I feel my knowledge that I have learned from this course can be used in my everyday work life and in my personal life, and in fact, I already find myself using the things I have learned for writing out proposals and plans and even in talking to people. I plan to continue to use what I have already learned in the course of my studies in order to broaden my skills and role at work, as well as, in my personal life. I also intend to use what I have learned and adopt new behaviors and apply it to new situations.
Experience is sometimes regarded as the best teacher. Many things can be learned in a classroom and by formal academic study, but many cannot. Reflective practice is a form approach to learning through experience. Reflective practice is a lifelong learning process to promote continual development of the nurse. Reflective writing practice helps the nurse to gain knowledge and to challenge their own ideas and concepts. The idea of reflective practice is not only to see what happened, but to see the situation through new eyes, eyes that can help in personal growth and to develop ways to respond differently in the future.
When first brainstorming what topic I was going to pick for each annotated bibliography, it took me a while before I settled on a topic for each essay. While reflecting on my writing process, I came to the conclusion that more time would have definitely benefited my argument for each of these annotated bibliographies.
Reflecting on this course over this semester, there have been many lessons learned that will be valuable, as we enter the business world. Our first lesson was to learn to work together, as a team, to prepare a short memo, long memo, letter, and email for use in the business world. This is a lesson that will experience many times as we do our daily work. Punctuation and grammar are so important to present to the client and other organizations that we are professionals. It could mean the loss of a sale or acquiring new business. It’s like dressing for work; looking professional or unprofessional.
My desire was to challenge myself and pursue my belief in life-long learning. And yes, the last eight weeks have definitely been a challenge intellectually in IDS 101. After the first two weeks of school, I seriously questioned why I would go back to school at fifty-one years of age for personal satisfaction. The days were long and I wasn’t sure I still had the self-discipline and determination that would be needed to finish. Over the last eight weeks, this class gave me numerous opportunities to hone my skills in critical thinking, research, and writing. This class has given me the necessary skills to continue toward completing my degree.
As our goal with collateral was to make the most impact, it was important for us to understand our audience and their tastes. For instance, information on program pamphlets needed to contain appropriate information. Length was also a key control factor in all my work. Since our events are designed to be a light and fun experience, the vibe had to match the writing we produced. Hence, at least for us, less was more. In addition, the class that has added the most value to my experience has been Teamwork and Negotiations. There are so many aspects to cooperation one cannot fully learn through reading a textbook. Working for a semester on multiple projects with the focus of developing a strong team has been phenomenal in learning the soft skills required to be an effective follower and leader. Humans are complicated beings. There is rarely an isolated causal relationship. Knowing there is not just one factor but a combination has made me a better listener and improved my intuitiveness. Additionally, it has helped me stop stereotyping people. As a result, the coursework has equipped me with transferable skills required of any typical worker who is required to work well both independently and in
In the yearbook class, I think I did good enough to pass. My grade should be about a B or higher. The reason why I think this, is that I took the time to do my pages and I did a lot of work to finish my pages in time. I also would like a passing grade, because, I think I put a lot of thought in my pages, like the background and other things and creativity to my pages. I was assigned Staff, Middle School Baseball, Middle School Boys Soccer, and Middle School ASB. In the beginning of the year, I was working and giving ideas to my partners on the Staff page and the Middle school Boys soccer page. Towards the middle of the school year I had to work on my pages and they worked on the other pages for me. Julian did the staff page

I am particularly interested in the 1st STEP program because of the opportunity presented to acquire advocacy, persuasion and presentation skills that are fundamental not only in the court room but also in all areas of lawyering. As a continuing J.D. student, and ranked 86 (47%) of my class, I wish to engage in the fundamentals of litigation so as to better serve possible clients. Because I was pre-admitted into the program upon my acceptance letter, I choose Golden Gate University to learn and grow and hope this program will further my education.
During my first year at UMD I dedicated much time and effort to ensuring academic success. In tandem to my pursuit for academic excellent I also sought to be involved in the UMD community. While achieving good grades and getting the most out of learning are worthy pursuits, I firmly believe that reaching out to others in various ways helps me to grow and mature. Since sharing my gifts with others will help to improve my educational experience, this year I plan on starting calculus tutoring. I am eager for the opportunity to have a chance to sharpen my leadership skill through this program. When I first got to UMD, I made friends at the Newman Center. I helped out as a student missionary by volunteering to be a small group leader during various
As a young black woman I have known that odds are stacked against me for most of my life, I have seen how my identity itself is a triple negative, but despite the obvious mathematical solution to a triple negative I am determined to turn it into a positive. And I believe that this summer program at Spelman can definitely help me do it. I have set myself up for succes in every way I can, including involving myself in as many leadership opportunities as possible and doing community service ever since I was in a kid. I was teaching karate two days a week in 8th grade in order to pay for my classes, chosen to be the keynote speaker at the beginning of the year convocation going in to my freshman year, first chair in my high school Wind Ensemble
After almost completed my first semester successfully her at Arizona State University, I got educated in a variety of subjects from my classes, but the class the inspired my the most and had a great affect in the way I look to my career was the Student Success in Business class WPC 101. I remember the first day of this class where I was required to write an essay about My Sun Devil Store, and from that moment I knew that this class is going to be full of inspiring materials. I have experienced from my first semester her at ASU many circumstances not only challenging but also entertaining with regards to my classes. The biggest takeaway in this semester is finding my strong skills in Math and computer applications, and exploring more about my Supply Chain Management degree as well.
At the start of this class I questioned how you could be taught business in a class setting. I truly felt that business is something that you gained knowledge through experience, on the job training, and company advancements. In the past few weeks of digging into our Intro to Business class (chapters 1-8), I feel that I actually have a better understanding of how and why things work the way they do in a business setting. I’ve had business employment experience; and I feel that I have had a few moments in the literature of this class that gave me a bit of a “aha” moment. Moments that I was able to link back to my experience and thought, now it all makes sense.
