Early Childhood Education is a branch of our education system in which grades kindergarten through sixth grade are taught core subjects. These subjects include English, math, history, and science. “Early childhood education is a broad term used to describe any type of educational program that serves children in their preschool years, before they are old enough to enter kindergarten. Early childhood education may consist of any number of activities and experiences designed to aid in the cognitive and social development of preschoolers before they enter elementary school” (Early Education teaching). To be a kindergarten teacher, one would have to earn a bachelor’s degree, complete a teacher preparation program in elementary education and be certified through the state. After obtaining licensure, an individual may apply for National Board Certification, which will result in a raise in salary, and make them more desirable to districts for hire. A career is an “occupation undertaken for a significant period for progress” (Webster’s Dictionary). The responsibilities of an elementary teacher range from preparing lesson plans and maintaining discipline in the classroom to analyzing student progress. To achieve greatness as an elementary teacher one should possess an innate “passion for teaching, love for kids, work ethic that will not quit, and a willingness to change” (Strauss 1). Licensing requirements for preschool teachers vary by state. Some states require a bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education and others require certification by a nationally recognized authority. The child development associate (CDA) credential which is the most common type of certification. It requires a mix of classroom training and experience working with children. This comes along with an independent of an individual’s competence. The Encyclopedia of careers and vocational guidance 11th edition shares some requirements. “In high school you should take child development, home economics, and other classes that involve you with child care”. It also says “you’ll also need a fundamental understanding of the general subjects you’ll be introducing to preschool students, so take English, science, and math”. Don’t forget art, music, and drama for creative skills.
Early Childhood Education illustrates the teaching and care of children in other environments outside of the home. Early childhood centers on the development of all children no matter their gender, race, abilities, or ethnic orientation and gives knowledge of early childhood learning process, which entails values, culture, desires of parents for their children, and especially a child’s need for knowledgeable functionality in society.
“Early roots of play as a best practice for early learning was documented by Plato, a Greek philosopher, who insisted that play is considered a natural activity of childhood.”(Ingrid Crowther, 2011, Pg. 2) Early Childhood Education is a term that refers to educational programs that are devoted to children from birth to the age of eight. “Children of this age learn by exploring and investigating; therefore, their environment should support and encourage this process.”(Rebecca Isbell and Betty Exelby, 2001, Pg. 11) Early childhood environments should be attractive and exciting. These environments should allow children to work and play using proper resources, materials, and tools.
The career I am researching is an elementary school teacher. Some of the main duties include establishing and enforcing rules for behavior and procedures for maintaining order among the students, preparing materials for activities, establish clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects, and communicate those objectives to students. Responsibilities include grading work, maintaining the classroom, and teaching them what they need to know. The work environment for an elementary school teacher mainly is kindergarten and elementary school teachers work in public and private schools. They generally work school hours when students are present and use nights and weekends to prepare lessons and grade papers. Most kindergarten and elementary school teachers do not work during the summer.

When a child is growing up, their environment plays a very important in role on the skills that they obtain. Some of the skills to prepare them for their future would be the emergent literacy skills which include phonological awareness, alphabet knowledge, print concepts, narrative awareness, vocabulary, and oral language. These skills can be obtained through the home environment and early childhood education settings. Emergent literacy skills are developed before kindergarten and they predict the child’s later success in reading. There are some factors that could affect if the child is able to obtain literacy skills. Socioeconomic status is a major factor that could set back a child from obtaining the skills. Socioeconomic status would affect what resources the child would have available at home and if the parent or guardian is able to give the child the necessary language and literacy exposure because they are always at work. There are also some other factors such as a child having a language impairment and disadvantaged literacy experiences.
