write a two page essay explaining which locations and subjects were of interest to you. What specifically intrigued you and why are they important to tourism? How does a book like this prepare a tourist for their visit? Introduction Paris is a tantalizing place and Downie made it seem all the more so with his unique approach to describing it. It was quite difficult to select one specific place to explore since all seemed so tantalizing, but I eventually settled on the Île de Saint Louis as being the most attractive location. Many of the subjects and locations covered by Downie tantalized me. These were not only the more famous locations and topics such as the Seine, the Place des Vosges, Coco Chanel, and Vincent van Gogh, but even more insignificant locations. Tantalizing too was what Downie called the Paris underneath Paris (I..e all of the tunnels, nooks, crannies, and catacombs which lie under the city proper),. Loving the sea and water in general, I was attracted to "The Boat People of the Seine," and would love to live (temporarily at least) amongst those who make their home and livelihoods on the péniches (cargo-cum-houseboats) of Paris's waterways . Downie's chapter on "Night Walking" was equally attractive in a different way. It is hard for me to choose any one site above another, but I would like to mix the famous sights such as Versailles and, of course, museums and ancient places with walks along the quiet quaint cobbled streets, and along the rivers with

A Small Place by Jamaica Kincaid presents the hypothetical story of a tourist visiting Antigua, the author’s hometown. Kincaid places the reader in the shoes of the tourist, and tells the tourist what he/she would see through his/her travels on the island. She paints a picturesque scene of the tourist’s view of Antigua, but stains the image with details of issues that most tourists overlook: the bad roads, the origin of the so-called native food, the inefficiency of the plumbing systems in resorts, and the glitches in the health care system. Kincaid was an established writer for The New Yorker when she wrote this book, and it can be safely assumed that majority of her readers had, at some point in their lives, been tourists. I have been a
It was very impactful being put in the tourist seat while reading this novel. In the beginning of the story as the tourist i am being exposed to all this negativity which i came here in the first place to avoid. Kincaid tells us that everyone has new cars here because it is really easy to get loans from the bank. This left
Sharm el-Sheik, Egypt. It seems to be a semi-popular tourist spot even though sharks and other creatures live in the ocean by the shore. The story itself, though refers to other areas around this setting that some of the characters proceed to search for the Frenchman or in the Frenchman’s case his various body parts in these locations; you never actually have these places in a scene.
The first week of the semester is in the books and I have to say I’m happy with how all of my classes started. For this journal entry we were asked to compare three websites and answer several questions about how we feel about each website. The three website are Lascaux, Stonehenge, Ancient Egypt. From the little bit of time I’ve spent looking at each website I have to say the Stonehenge was my favorite one. Making that decision was really hard; the websites were all equally weird and had something that made it stand out from each other. If I had to make a decision on which place would be the most fun to explore I would have to say StoneHenge. The reason being it looks like it’s the safes place between the three. Another reason I would I think it would be fun to explore the StoneHenge is I found myself really interested in some of the facts about this places.

Baldwin suspects that it is neither about learning nor about the love of French culture and history, but it is rather an escape from reality, at first. Media, as always, tends to depict places and objects by idealizing them and giving the audience the wrong idea about them. Similarly, films of Paris show that it is the city “where everyone loses
Even after 850 years, the Notre Dame de Paris is still an awe inspiring Cathedral. Notre Dame de Paris is a Catholic Cathedral located next to the Seine river in Paris. It has remarkable gothic architecture, and dozens of important relics are held inside. Notre Dame is a famous Cathedral because of its breathtaking exterior, stunning interior design, and unique history.
This has been the basis for many French filmmakers, as this is the type of France audience finds most pleasurable to watch. Jeunet has presented to his viewers a stereotypical view of France. Jeunet chose to set Amelie in Montmarte because it deisplays stereotypical qualities of a French wonderland, as well as being aesthetically pleasing. Included in the shots are many stone buildings, clean streets, and beautiful colours, all of which have been cautiously selected, adding to the director’s aspiration of creating a French wonderland. “We worked on everything: moving cars, removing signals, graffiti's...” (Jeunet, JP, 2001). It can be seen that the narrative, characters and underlying message of Amelie are all incredibly positive, and Jeunet has clearly found inspiration from Paris being the city of love, as well as memories from his own life. “I had in mind a box full of tiny happy events and stories. I wanted to use them to make audience feel happy.” (Jeunet, JP, 2001)
The environment in which people live in demonstrates the societal norms and values of said culture. In Émile Zola’s The Belly of Paris, Florent, a political outcast, returns to Paris only to find that the regime has drastically changed. Napoleon III, a self-elected emperor, has torn down many of the streets of Old Paris to make room for the angular and orderly streets of New Paris as well as the new markets of Les Halles. Throughout the novel, the character’s lives revolve around the various markets in Les Halles and the streets of Paris. Zola uses descriptions of architecture and city planning as well as how people use space within Paris to demonstrate the city’s corruption, signifying that the architecture of a city is a reflection of
In Charles Rearick’s book, Paris Dreams, Paris Memories, he describes the various ways in which Paris is “represented” through various images he identifies as the City of Light, Old Paris, the Capital of Pleasures, and Paname. Rearick further writes how and why these images of Paris came of importance and how they shaped the geographical layout of the city we know today. All of these images together have likewise produced the city of Paris while also providing the framework of Parisian events and experiences.
To begin with, knowing the word catacombs is essential.Catacombs are underground passages or chambers(Davey 28 and Kalish 1).Despite each one having its own purpose the catacombs of Paris had its own beginning.Going back to the cemetery of Les Innocents and a few other graveyards involved. Les Innocents,Paris's oldest and largest cemetery brought life to the catacombs(Legacy 77)."Paris was a city in flux:familiar social categories had disintegrated, traditional political authority had been overthrown, and a decade of violence left
nous avons visité la seine de rivière qui coulent à travers Paris. C'est aussi la frontière de Paris. J'ai apprécié le trajet du bateau le plus pendant la visite de seine de rivière. Bien que mes amis l'aient trouvé fatigant.
Paris is like no other place on earth, its beauty is indescribable, the amount of famous structures is astounding, and is attraction draws many tourists there every year. My experience touring Paris will always be on of my favorite memories. Everywhere I looked, it was as if I was in a dream. There was so much elegance in such simple structures it seemed unrealistic. Wherever I went, it seemed as if the magnificence only grew with each passing step.
If I could travel anywhere in the world, I would like to travel to Paris the capital of France. Paris is said to be one of the best cities in the world. Although it is urban, people there still live romantic and slow-paced lives. I think that such a place is hard to extremely rare. Also, Paris is famous for its politics, fashion, arts and science. I really want to try out the food in Paris especially the cheese there. I have also read a lot about the attractions in Paris such as the Louver, the Eiffel Tower and the Notre -dame de Paris. I yearn to see for myself these great works of art. Paris is also a shopping heaven; there are different famous brands and luxury brands in different department stores. Parisians understand how to enjoy their life and how to find happiness from ordinary things. They also understand how to transform their ideals about life into art, make them into music or other artistic forms. In a word, I really love Paris.
