The United States of America has been stated to be the land of opportunity. Provided that, education is a popular subject, yet, where is the action? In President Obamas State of the Union Address, rhetorical devices such as logos, utopia, and pathos are used to convey his intentions to advance the education system.
Logic statements are capable of standing for counterarguments, however, Obama uses logical appeal as he claims the “[l]atino dropout rate has been cut in half over the past 10 years” (Obama). This shows how the graduation rate has increased in a specific time (Obama). The claims allow one to trust what the statistics prove because they sound resourceful. Obama states he pledged to “connect 99 percent of [his] students to high-speed broadband over five years (Obama). Obama theorized a cause and effect after making the down payments on his goal, and not to mention, the showed sum of students that connected with thousands of different schools.

President Obama is able to create an image of perfection for the audience with his address. The president decided he would not wait for congress to take action, so, he pictured the perfect world of education. For example, he claims to “[bring] business leaders from all across the country” as well “philanthropists from all around the country who are willing to help work with school districts…” (Obama). Furthermore, he wants to make sure the young ones receive the full advantage of the “high-quality” schooling they deserve. Stating his dreams of making America great causes the reader to defend his dream because people support anyone who pushes for what sounds
Education leads to the success of many influential people, such as Dr. Ben Carson. In 2013, Dr. Ben Carson, a highly respected pediatric neurosurgeon gave a speech at the National Prayer Breakfast. Carson suggests that a lot of government policies under President Obama are failing. For example, national debt has severely decreased due to the lack of education. Through the use of optimistic and direct language, personal imagery with welcoming expressions and confident hand gestures, Carson gained the respect and trust of the audience, other well respected influencers and/or politicians. Carson’s ability to use these devices not only gained the trust of his audience, but also took control of his argument. This being, the United States should focus on
President Obama initiated a new platform for education that would replace the (No Child Left Behind Act). The President, implemented a compelling education approach that guaranteed that every student will receive exceptional education. In his 2008 campaign, he increased the public awareness, by improving the education system K-12. “While NCLB has been invaluable in providing a clear picture of which schools and students are struggling, it is only the beginning of education reform" (Press release, July 16, 2008). 2008) President Obama stated, “I will not settle for an America where some kids don’t have a chance. I’ll invest in early-childhood education. (Speech at 2008 Democratic Convention Aug 27,
This essay is about President Barack Obama’s speech “ Back to school “ which he held September 8th 2009 at the Wakefield High School in Arlington, Virginia. The overall message in the speech is whether young people are taking school serious and understand the importance of hard work. Not only for themselves but also for the future of the country.
He says that, “The future of America depends on you. What you are learning in school today will determine whether we as a nation can meet our greatest challenges in the future.” “If you do not do that -- if you quit on school – you are not just quitting on yourself, you are quitting on your country.” Through hyperbole, audience will have an illusion that giving up themselves means giving up their countries. This makes the audience encouraged and consciously give up being counter and lose the chance to refute. The students, who are given honorable status, will earnestly study and become the defenders of the country. Because of Hyperbole, Obama’s point of view becomes in-depth to the audience and rhetorical motivation is highlighted.
America is still the land of opportunity and people still strive and succeed in their quest for self-improvement. And in no other aspect of America can this opportunity to succeed and their striving for betterment be as so clearly seen than in Americans obsession to achieve education at the highest levels. 94 percent of Americans believe that Education is important and 73 percent agree that higher education is “essential for getting a good job” (Source F). This symbolizes how Americans see education as the outlet to achieve affluence, success and a “better,” “high[er] quality of life” (source F). Furthermore, the many scholarships offered by schools, one of which mentioned by Obama in Source B, displays another aspect of the education system that provides opportunities for self-improvement, if earned through hard work, for an individual by providing a chance to obtain higher education no matter what background one comes from. In essence, education has become the primary path to achieve an improved standing on both a societal and individual
On January 28, 1996, the NASA shuttle orbiter mission STS-51-L and the tenth flight of Space Shuttle Orbiter broke apart 23 seconds after its launch, making it one of the most important events in the history of spaceflight in terms of its aftermath on the audience who witnessed the explosion. The spacecraft disintegrated over the Atlantic Ocean, claiming the lives of seven crew members. It was later found that two rubber O-rings had failed because of the cold temperatures on the morning of the liftoff. Family, friends, and millions of T.V viewers witnessed the explosion, which led president Ronald Reagan to address the accident. Reagan planned to give his State of the Union Address, but after learning of the Space Shuttle disaster he postponed it for a week and addressed the nation at the Oval Office late afternoon. By using rhetorical appeals in his address to the nation, Reagan effectively addresses the nation and crews’ families about the explosion while comforting, inspiring, and honoring the views through the use of rhetoric.
The President put forth that he has now a plan for a budget that holds discretionary spending below inflation, makes tax relief permanent, and to cut the deficit in half by the year 2009. The principle to his budget is, “ Taxpayer money must be spent wisely, or not at all.” It was also stated that education is a very important part of this nation and that the standards of the schools need to be raised, “…so every high
President Obama’s response in the Huffington Post article "Obama Thinks Students Should Stop Stifling Debate On Campus" has the main message of the importance and value of different perspectives, especially for college students. Obama’s firm belief and argument is that college students, even though talking to high school students, who are in college to gain higher knowledge, should listen to different perspectives to understand things better. It is not necessarily about changing one’s mind, although one rightfully could, but more about being thoughtful and thinking further than one might have on matters. Obama’s directed audience, although he believes the concept as a whole is important, is college students because he wants them to grow better
In former (1)President Barack Obama’s (2) 2009 Inaugural Address, he address’ the problems (3) America (4) was facing at the time and signifies the steps he will take to make the issues lessen. Obama’s purpose (5) is to assure the people of America that he will take the power he has earned, to make America greater. (6) He adopts a patriotic tone in order to convince his people that change is coming.
To underline his argument, Obama gives examples of students in America, who has done incredible in school: “He’s endured all sorts of treatments and surgeries, one of which affected his memory, so it took him much longer – hundreds of extra hours – to do his schoolwork. But he never fell behind, and he’s headed to college this fall.” (p. 9-10, l. 97-100). With the concrete and relevant examples of Jazmin, Andoni and Shantell he makes it clear to every student, that it is logical and rational to take responsibility for their education and set goals. He confirms to the students, that his promises are true.
“And yet, we still live in a country where too many bright, striving Americans are priced out of the education they need. It’s not fair to them, and it’s sure not smart for our future” (Obama). In my opinion, in this country where a lot of people come to live the “American Dream” there are so many benefits for the low income families, where we can receive food stamp, WIC, financial aid, free health insurance, free child care etc. When I was listening to this speech, all I could think of the massive amount of people that could enjoy college through financial aid and at least cover their first years in school, but don’t do it. Many of them because they are afraid to lose their “benefits” and get out of their comfort zone. One of the change I would do to this system is to give privilege to those who really wants to succeed. Education should not cost nothing to the parent of a child who wants to have a career, at the end that child will be contributing to our society and our nation would benefit from the knowledge of that person. There should be a balance on where the benefits go. There are middle class family that can benefit from some of these. In my opinion not all the benefits should go to the “low-income families” like he said: “When what you’re
After winning the 44th presidential election for the Democrats, and becoming the first African-American to hold this office, Barack Obama gives his winning speech known as the Presidential Election-Night Speech. He is delivering his speech in Chicago, 2008, predominantly people of the minority were present. Additionally, these are people who seek a change in the way society treats those who are perceived and treated differently solely because of their socioeconomic status, mobile, health or mental state, sexual orientation, gender, and/or ethnicity. Obama is aware that this is an expectant, optimistic, but also questioning audience, as he is generally speaking of the whole United States; he is talking to his supporters as well as those who oppose or feel indifferent towards him. Therefore, Obama knowingly and cunningly uses rhetorical devices such as pathos, anecdotes, humor, and repetition in order to instill confidence and reassurance, and to communicate his standpoint on important issues.
President Obama claims that providing high-quality preschool for all four year olds in the United States will help save the government money over time and will help create more stable families with parents that can hold a job. Obama says in his State of the Union Address in 2013 that America must equip its citizens with the adequate job training and skills to be able to fill the job openings that the economy is creating. In order to do this, Obama suggests starting learning at the earliest age possible and providing a high-quality preschool program for every single child in America. He claims that this will benefit families on an individual level and society as a whole as more equipped, educated citizens are produced. Although Obama has high
Furthermore, Obama brings forth his push for creating a more secure middle class by juxtaposing the need for better early childhood education and cheaper tuition and wages for college aged students. “We believed we could
Barack Obama, the President of the United States since 2009, proposed multiple bills during his speech, “State of the Union 2011”, to help improve the economy, education, job rate, and deficit (Obama). Obama Stated, “We need to out-innovate, out-educate, and out-build the rest of the world,” which was said to help encourage the audience to help improve the way we think, teach, and even learn (Obama). Throughout many years, the United States has become deeper in debt; therefore, Obama decided to help our country prosper more by taking responsibility for our deficit and helping to reduce it (Obama). In the beginning of the speech, India and China were referenced in relation to education and how they have begun teaching children sooner, longer, and more in the areas of science and math in order to compete in the world (Obama). In this day and age we live in a world of technology that is only beginning to take off. Technology will soon be the center of everything and the only way to compete is to win in means of having technology, knowing how to work technology, and gaining more information about technology for better use (Obama). During the speech Obama uses pathos, logos, and archetypes to persuade the audience in helping to progress the United States.
