The memoir The Red-Headed Hawaiian by Chris McKinney and Rudy Puana, is about life and troubles that Rudy Puana goes through as he grows up. It explains what Rudy does in life to become the man that he is today. In this book, Rudy Puana struggles through so much, but eventually overcomes the pain that he had received.

“Sweat,” a short story written by Zora Neale Hurston depicts the story of Delia, a washerwoman who is physically and mentally abused by her husband, Sykes. As Hurston explains, Delia is a strong, hardworking, calm, brave, and understanding woman who is able to stand with her head held high even through all the troubles she endures. In contrast, Sykes is abusive, a coward, troubleshooter and a man who depends on his wife to provide for him. He even has the indecency to use Delia’s money to pay for his mistress’ apartment. He messes with Delia to bring her down so he can be able to bring himself up as if his masculinity depends on it. All three symbols, which are the snake, the clothes Delia washes, and the light play an important role in this story to highlight Delia’s strength and weaknesses which finally help her find the freedom she desires from the domestic abuse that she has to deal with.

In Our Time, written by Ernest Hemingway, is a collection of short stories that were published in 1925 and defined Hemingway's writing style from there on. As a symbolic image of Hemingway himself, Nick Adams is faced with troubling relationships that ultimately define who he is. Life experiences from young to old define show how Nick lives his love before, during, and after World War One. These experiences strengthen his relationships, maturity, and masculinity.

The novel Siddhartha, written by Hermann Hesse, is about a guy named Siddhartha located in ancient India. His best friend, Govinda, are greatly involved in the elite Braham cast: Braham is an elite group of the highest god of Hinduism, which means they are viewed royalty and loaded with heaps of wealth. Siddhartha is the golden boy of his community: women dream of acquainting with him and men long to have his immense power and abundance. The main direct sight of Hindus focus on devotion to God or several gods. Even though Siddhartha endures meditation practices, takes the form of rituals and practices associated with images and sculptures of gods in home shrines, and participates in holy satisfaction, he still feels the emptiness in him not satisfying his needs. In order to obtain the inner peace that he wishes to seek, he tests new solutions to satisfy him, such as, Enlightenment. Enlightenment is defined as a man’s emergence from one’s self-incurred immaturity. The young Indian is very adapted to the Hindu ascetic, for the pressure the Brahim scholar instructs upon him. The only solution in times like these, Siddhartha and Govinda would mediate under the banyan tree.

In life there are times when we suffer a conflict between doing what we “ought to do” and what we “want to do”. In the book Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe there is a lot of examples of this. There is also many conflicts in my life and everyone's life based on these conflicts. The two examples of this I am going to use are me going to my dad's for the weekend or going to my friends house, and Okonkwo beating his wife during the peace festival.

Throughout every life, humans experience a rite of passage where they encounter transformative events that allow them to develop and grow towards adulthood. Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird and Sandra Cisneros’ The House on Mango Street both express this maturation and development from naivety. In To Kill a Mockingbird, Jem Finch lives in Maycomb, Alabama, a community gripped by racist attitudes during the Great Depression. In several childhood experiences, Jem grows after realizing the true character of his county’s members and gaining a greater sense of compassion towards other people. Esperanza of The House on Mango Street lives in an impoverished community where she is forced to realize the maturation of her sexuality at a hastened pace. Jem and Esperanza begin the journey to come of age through their loss of innocence from their respective encounters of racism and gender roles; however, Jem matures through his disillusionment and gaining of a greater sense sympathy in his experiences with illnesses and racism while Esperanza grows by gaining autonomy and independence because of her encounters with racism and sexual maturity.

Merriam-Webster’s dictionary defines gutsy as “marked by courage, pluck, or determination; having a strong or appealing flavor ("Dictionary and Thesaurus | Merriam-Webster"). It may be common to associate this adjective with a skydiver or daredevil, but what about an eighteenth century columnist named Fanny Fern? Fanny Fern, or as her birth certificate would state, Sarah Willis Parton, lived in the mid to late 1800s and wrote famously about controversial issues that are still prevalent in the twenty first century. Fern wrote with whimsy and liveliness, making issues like gender inequality in marriage and women’s reform seem funny and lighthearted, although looking closer, we can see that (through the use of several tropes) she was anything but. With cuts such as a woman’s cult of domesticity disguised as a relatable entry about silly husbands, we can look back at Fern’s work today and admire her courage to write without compromising her beliefs, as well as her ‘guts’ and determination. Fanny Fern famously used a witty mix of sarcasm, pun, and metaphor in her eighteenth century writing to critique and challenge her highly oppressive patriarchal society.

African Americans have been discriminated and were not treated fairly from the beginning of the American colonies up to the 1960s. Their history included about 250 years of slavery followed by another 100 years of discrimination. However, many people state that throughout the 1800s, the whaling industry helped African Americans thrive as a race. In addition, they were treated as equals and could gain glory and wealth from it. In most cases, this is not true because negroes for three main reasons. Almost all African people did not receive high positions on their crew ships. Also, they experienced segregation on ships and were treated not equally. Finally, they were taken for their cheap and hard labor in a dangerous, unrewarding industry. Using internet sources and the novel, In The Heart of The Sea, by Nathaniel Philbrick, African Americans in the whaling industry had low status within crews and faced harsh working conditions as well as discrimination and racism.

The story “Sweat” by Zora Neale Hurston focuses on the marriage life of Delia Jones and her husband Sykes. Hurston is known as famous American writer, she writes on real life stories as it was during the years when she wrote the stories. The story is about Delia Jones, a hardworking and religious woman who mistakenly marries Sykes and has been living in a strained marriage life from fifteen years. Although they have been married for fifteen year, the relationship has been abusive. Sykes is an abusive and unemployed man. In addition, Sykes have a mistress and he wants Delia to leave their house so that he can move in his lover Bertha. Sykes knows that Delia is afraid of snake, so he scares Delia several times with the bullwhip, which looks like a snake. Eventually, he brings the real snake to get rid of Delia. However, at the end of the story Delia gets her revenge on her husband Sykes for his mistreatment over the past fifteen years.

Ragged Dick by Horatio Alger. This story follows a young boy, who through hard work, determination, self-reliance, honesty and good character went from a homeless black-boot to a respectable, high paying job.  This story is filled with examples of what life was like in New York City, telling the us what he would find and experience in it. In Ragged Dick, This was a time of progress, change and falsehood in American History. This is when people really started to chase the illusive American dream, and Alger is trying to capture this rags-to-riches vision. The fact that the book takes place in New York is not enough to understand the full extent of this book. At this time many Americans were going through one of the hardest times in

The phases of life are described uniquely in the novel “Shirley.” At first glance, you don’t necessarily think that Charlotte Bronte is trying to describe life, but when you analyze it, it is a beautiful way of describing life and the changes that happen throughout it. Bronte uses personification, hyperboles, and a well written syntax and diction to describe these different phases.

When I was a little girl at early of my age, I spent a wonderful time with my grandma near a sea in my hometown during the last two months of her life. That was the first time we saw the smile back to her face since we got the news that she got intestine cancer. Back to that time I was deeply impressed by how being around the sea was capable to change people’s emotion in such a positive way. The poet, Pablo Neruda, in his poem “The Sea” illustrates how the sea teaches a trapped man a lesson on how to be released from struggling to find freedom and happiness. The three crucial poem-writing elements, sound, structure, and figurative language make the power of sea more vivid just like a picture we could see and have physical feelings about. And when we try to get a deeper understanding of the poem, it is the sound that we hear first.
