In order to cope with the stress Max has decided to start exercising, but although he is coping in a healthy way he is eating a unhealthy diet and is smoking. From the article “Coping with Stress,” some healthy ways to manage stress is to eat a healthy diet, avoid drugs such as smoking, talk to others such as friends, or family (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2018). In Max’s life he has “large social structure involving many good friends and family members.” This would be a coping method Max could use to ease some of his stress. Resilience has been topic that we have learned and are discussing in my English class. When you can overcome hardships faster and easier when you are more resilient person. We have been analyzing an article called “The Science of Bouncing Back” by Mandy Oaklander. Oaklander discusses methods of many people on their experience, becoming a more resilient person. People respond to emotion and hardships in their life differently, and people with more struggles overcome it more gradually, and Mandy Oaklander made me consider the possibilities resilience has, and can offer in everyday life.
This paper will examine the concepts of risk, protective factors, and resiliency. The paper will start with defining and elaborating on the concepts of risk and protective factors and examine how the latter promotes or hinders an individual’s capacity for resiliency. The paper will expound on the concepts of risk, protective factors and resiliency, by integrating the terms into the case study of Will Quinones. Lastly, the paper will conclude with strategies that can be used to promote resiliency in children that are deemed at- risk.
In my essay topic I will be discussing my view on (G.A.S) P.N.I. illness, stress and coping. The topics covered in my paper will be based off of my own personal experiences with correlation to Chapter 14 “Stress, coping and wellbeing” and their connection to my own personal experiences.
Stress, if not properly dealt with, can take a heavy toll on our health. Learning to deal with stressors can appear easier for some, than others. Life can seem like an uphill struggle for many, and depending how we cope with those struggles can mean the different to either a brighter future or a bleak existence. According to (Aronson, Wilson, & Akert, 2013), people that are resilient can usually quickly respond to a traumatic or stressful event by acknowledging the event, then adapt to it and return to normal functions. I consider myself to be somewhat resilient, and fairly more resilient than my peers. I have been lauded on my resilience to work issues during annual performance appraisals and feedbacks with my supervisor.
Stress research and the framework in which personality is studied in relation to the coping process, has recently conceptualized in the ‘‘third generation’’ research (Ebstrup et al, 2011). The framework in regards to the third generation research refers to roles of personality in coping while maintaining strong operational distinctions between coping, personality appraisal, and adaptational outcomes. The issue that arises is that each patient’s tolerance for stress is different. Personality is a factor that is related to how a person handles many life changes and experiences. This relationship is between personality and coping leads to the
He can also feel stressed about being overwhelmed in a crowded city. The frequent arguments with his wife also can create stress for Max. Some risk factors for max involving a chance of getting a disease includes him smoking. Having a diet based high on fat can also give him a chance of getting a disease. Not being able to make decisions at work can also create a lot of stress for Max. Some ways Max can cope with stress is by relying on his friends and family members. Exercising regularly is also a way for Max to release the stress. His children and wife are also a way for Max to cope with stress, family is always important. Even going to work every day can be a stress reliever.
To understand the resilience we need to understand the concept of stress. Stress is somewhat subjective both in the measurement of severity and experience; the way in which individuals perceive and interpret stressors may vary greatly (Bowes & Jaffee, 2013). In this articles we found that stress is the reason by which resilience occur.
Exercise can and will change personal outlook, personal perceptions and this in turn affects other areas of life. Stress causes people to get agitated easily and to always be tense. Dance aerobics has been shown to help relieve stress and allow anyone to feel more relaxed. “Following a regular aerobics program gives you a sense of commitment and control - two positive mental attitudes that help counteract stress. Aerobics also relax tense muscles, thereby completing (and relieving) your body's stress response. Finally, medical research has shown that regular aerobic activity increases the body's production of endorphins (a natural sedative) and catecholamines (chemical substances that help stabilize moods).” (Aerobics for Health) Many times people are stressed about their weight, and this may cause depression. As Missett has stated in her book, The Jazzercise Workout Book, “Exercise has been proven more effective than antidepressants.” (21) She goes on to point out, “Stress can cause people to eat more than they should, causing more stress because they have realized how much more they have gained.” (19) She goes on to assert that “many stress related problems have occurred to many people due to lack of
In my term paper, I would like to talk about Resilience which I believe is a prerequisite for an effective leader. Life has ups and downs and adversities are inevitable. Things can beyond our control, it is impossible for us to prevent unpleasant circumstances from happening. Difficulties and problems come out of nowhere, the stress and anxiety associated with adversity may knock us down if we cope with them inadequately. Chronic stress can lead to mental collapse if we still cannot manage them well, which is definitely undesirable for a leader because it can affect the cooperation with others as well as the team morale.
A way one can manage stress is to build their physical reserves. This includes exercise for cardiovascular fitness three to four times a week (moderate, prolonged rhythmic exercise is best, such as walking, swimming, cycling, or jogging), eat well-balanced, nutritious meals, maintain your ideal weight, avoid nicotine, excessive caffeine, and other stimulants, mix leisure with work, take breaks and get away when you can, get enough sleep, and finally be as consistent with your sleep schedule as possible.
As evident from the book, the ability of managing stress is not equal in all human beings. Some can handle it better, while some cannot. There are reasons behind the difference of stress management abilities of human beings. Information such as a child is at high risk of obesity and heart disease, if the mother is not well nourished in the first trimester and malnutrition in the second or third trimester may result in diabetes of the child. The book also informs that the people living in New York tend to die of heart attacks more than anywhere else in the United States. The book contains more such facts and information.
