The very start of the therapy process from the point to meeting a client is very important to engage the therapeutic alliance (Wener, et al., 2015, p. 312). A way to start engaging with the alliance is by presenting an open and respectful manner to the client, during the role play this initial phrase was
This is supervised and checked regularly by an accredited member of the BACP to ensure that the requirements of the BACP are being met. A person using counselling skills in other occupations may use similar methods but will not be formally using the guidelines and being assessed in such a way as that of a qualified counsellor. The intention of the use of the skills is also different. The counsellor and client relationship is a therapeutic one and both parties understand the potential or intended result of it, whereas using counselling skills may used for other purposes. For example, a person in a professional setting such as a people-management role may use listening, reflective and paraphrasing in a similar way to a counsellor yet the objective is different. The use of the counselling skills facilitates the relationship of the manager and the employee but there isn’t the intention behind it that there is between a counsellor and their client.

In this assignment I intend to define ‘counselling skills and knowledge’ and then show how I actively employ these qualities during my everyday life. These include informal helping interactions with family and friends, in a supervisory capacity at work and during skills practice sessions as part of my counselling course. Finally I’ll analyse the effects that these helping interactions have on me personally and the various ways in which I deal with those effects.

The British Association for Counselling’s Code of Ethics and Practice for Counsellors states that ‘Counselling may be concerned with developmental issues, addressing and resolving specific problems, making decisions, coping with crisis, developing personal insight and knowledge, working through feelings of inner conflict or improving relationships with others’ (BACP Ethical Framework).
A counselling relationship is likened to being on a journey - a beginning, middle and end (Smallwood, 2013). During the beginning phase the client develops sufficient trust in the counsellor and the relationship ‘to explore the previously feared edges of his awareness’ (Mearns and Thorne, 1988, p.126).
The essay will evaluate the necessity and importance of the development of the core conditions in the counselling process and critically analyse the strengths and weaknesses of the person-centred approach on the counselling process.
Research has shown that a strong therapeutic alliance is necessary for establishing a beneficial contact between the therapist and the client. If the therapist does not encourage the creation of a reliable therapeutic alliance from the beginning of the treatment, it will be hard to develop a constructive relationship with the client later. Establishing the therapeutic alliance will increase the chances of achieving the goal of the treatment because the clients will be willing to cooperate if they trust and respect the therapist. Clients are not likely to cooperate with therapists who impose their authority aggressively. Instead of imposing their authority on the patient, therapists should develop work with their patients by

In my most recent session of my college skills class, a little under a week ago, I took an assessment called ACT engage. Within seconds of submitting the test, it gave results that calculated my personal, behavioral and academic skills. These skills being measured are ones that are a necessity to a successful college education, such as: study skills, commitment, social connection, goal striving, communication, discipline, steadiness and academic self-confidence. These results are displayed in a graph, followed by written explanations of each skill and how much I am involved in each skill.
Establishing this alliance with Amy she was able to disclose her abused to me when she felt comfortable and safe to do so. From working with Amy I was able to see how important alliance between a therapist and client is. It allows you to work effectively together while building a therapeutic bond. According to John Nocross “the alliance is centrally the achievement of collaborative stance in therapy and was built on three components: agreements on the therapeutic goals, consensus on the tasks that make up therapy, and a bond between the client and the therapist (Norcross, 2011,
In the preface of the material I understand, and see the many different techniques, and counseling methods. The Preface states and says, that therapy is composed of communication. However I never knew how much emotional exchanges, that will take place between you and the client. The guidelines for implementing role play exercises, I like learning about that, and it would seem very useful, but I have never did it my self, so I will try this practice however I do not like to talk about things that, might bother me or upset me. In addition I never really like to talk about my self.
This last week in class we talked about dibs chapters and practiced role playing. In dibs we talked about chapters 10-12 and the changes that we have seen in dibs over these chapters. Someone mentioned that he is using I and very complex sentences, along with being able to do thing on his own. He is coming in and taking off his own coat and shoes without having to be asked or helped. I personally have been amazing at the changes in Dibs behavior as we have gone on, I wouldn’t think that in such little time that with just that 1 hour a week that he would be making such great improvements and leaps in his speaking and physical ability. I like being able to hear how other people may have been able to interpret the same paragraph but taken different things away from it during our discussion time. In class we have talked about our play sessions a lot and the do and don’ts associated with them. Talking through the different situations and hardships is really helpful to be able to think about all the different possibilities that could arise. I do not enjoy having to role play at all, it is weird and I feel like it doesn’t do much to help me personally. I do not like to embarrass myself in front of other people and it is not easier to do this with peers compared to children. I love children and I get along well with children so it is easy for me to connect and play with them, but people in my class I do not know well I really do not like being forced to pretend play with them.
