By definition, training and development refers to the process to obtain or transfer knowledge, skills and abilities needed to carry out a specific activity or task. The benefits of training and development--for both the employer and employee--are, in fact, much broader. To meet current and future business demands, training and development encompasses a wide range of learning actions, from training for tasks and knowledge sharing to improved customer service and career development, thus expanding individual, group and organizational effectiveness.

• Diversify the learning portfolio.
• Expand the view of whom to train.

To determine appropriate strategic learning imperatives, HR explores and gathers information. For example, regarding diversification of the company's learning portfolio, one might ask, "How are resources allocated?" Or, to accelerate the pace of learning, an important question is "Which employee groups need to quickly acquire new knowledge?"
The ability to use skills in the workplace and the opportunity for career development are regarded very important dis-satisfiers in the process of motivating and retaining employees in organizations. Employees expect opportunities to grow, or they will leave, taking with them valuable organizational knowledge and experience.
The companies are required to offer a broad range of benefits to help employees advance in their careers like professional development opportunities (e.g., seminars, conferences, courses, training to keep skills current); professional

The main objective of this type of training is to help to illustrate the importance of training and why achieving the proposed goals is so important for the success not only of the employee but of the entire company.
Training and Development is imperative to the organization’s progress. Training helps addressing employee weaknesses and builds a reliable and skilled workforce. This will improve the employees’ performance and boost their self confidence, and innovation. By acquiring the needed knowledge and skills, employees can perform more efficiently and increase the overall productivity of the organization.

When a manager monitor and evaluate the performance of an employee, the manager might realise the talent the employee has and how this talent could contribute the overall performance of the organisation. There are many keys elements with training and development that will improve performance. Training is very important, it provides the opportunity for employees to expand their knowledge. When a new employee is hired they will required to participate in orientation program, which gives employees the job satisfaction and gives them the commitment of being with that organization at the beginning.
It is important that training is provided in areas of management, business products, and business processes among others. The training is essential in ensuring that I have knowledge about the skills and competencies that my employees should possess. This will guide me during the recruitment process to hire employees that have the required skills to enhance the quality of services provided. I will also be able to acquire knowledge on how to motivate and retain the employees and the leadership skills to use. In addition, the training is necessary since it provides knowledge in business methods that and requirements. Furthermore, training is necessary so as to get information on the possible problems that are likely to affect my business. This will help in putting in strategies to mitigate the risks. It is also essential to have training programs so that I can acquire financial management knowledge on working capital management so as to increase profits. Lastly, training will provide marketing skills on how to attract new customers and retain existing customers.
In today’s competitive job market, it is important for employees to expand their knowledge and skills to enhance professional development. “Having a clear vision of what you want to accomplish can help advance and improve a person’s career” (p. 420). According to Noe, Hollenback, Gerhart & Wright (2011), career management can assist employees in development training so that they can be prepare to meet their career goals. Being passionate about your work, recognizing your accomplishments, and working on self-development are a few career enhancing techniques that can be utilized to improve your profession. Enhancing your professional and career development can help you with laying a foundation for career advancement.
Another practice that helps to achieve career growth and development is offering training opportunities for the employees. The employees are offered benefits that help them to further their education and achieve higher qualifications. This is a strategy which helps to increase the skills, qualifications and competence of the employees. In this way, the staff are at a better position to gain promotions within the organization as education qualification is not a barrier for them. The employees become motivated as they become more competitive in the market which is good for their career (Branham, 2012).
· Training - Employees want to increase their skills, knowledge, and abilities to remain marketable. It gives them a sense of job security. In today's workplace, the more training employees get, the more likely the employer will retain them. "According to a 1999 Emerging Workforce Study conducted by Interim Services and Louis Harris and Associates: Among employees who say their company offers poor training, 41 percent plan to leave within a year, versus only 12 percent of those who rate training opportunities as excellent. Training and development provide employees the skills and knowledge to keep up with the company’s changes and growth. It can also help to develop and improve the corporate culture, its efficiency and its effectiveness; and helps in creating the learning culture within the company.
Oribabor (2000) says that the aim of training and development to develop competencies such as technical , conceptual and managerial advantages for the furtherance of individual and organizational growth, also Isyakn (2000) identified that this process “TRAINING and DEVELOPMENT” is a continues one. Among other school that has highlighted the significance of Training and Development are Akintayo (1996), Graig (1976) and Oguntimehin (2001). They have postulated the functions as follows :-
