Fear is a crucial emotion that can result in fatal consequences or the saving of a life. It can motivate both selfless and selfish behavior. In this way, fear can be used to affect a character’s state of mind in a novel, which can ultimately motive all of that character’s further decisions within the story. Fear motivates an individual’s actions by changing his or her state of mind and leading him or her to act out-of-character and do things he or she normally would not do. William Shakespeare uses fear in his story, Romeo and Juliet, to keep the relationship between the titular characters a secret and to demonstrate the pressure put on the characters by society.

Montague's son Romeo in the book Romeo and Juliet written by Shakespeare in the 1500’s, supports the audience with many of his strengths and weaknesses. In this story, two well-known families of Verona, the Montagues, and Capulets are in a feud against each other; however, the son of the Montague family, Romeo, and the daughter of the Capulet family, Juliet fall in love at first sight at a Capulet party. Even though Romeo is a Montague, his personality and his calm behavior persuades Capulet to let him stay at the party. After he meets Juliet, Romeo asks the friar to marry them both; even though, the friar was concerned about Romeo because of his instantly changed and unthought decisions he lets them marry each other secretly. Romeo’s commendable behavior proves a strength and his uncontrollable emotions show his weakness.

When Juliet finds out that Tybalt has been killed and Romeo is in exile, for killing Tybalt, Juliet feels both passionate about Romeo and disappointed in both Romeo and herself, which reveal her inner struggle. In Act 3, Juliet’s Nurse comes back with this news that Tybalt is dead and that Romeo is such an awful person for killing him. Juliet fights back at the Nurse, and herself, for speaking bad about Romeo. She claims, ““Shall I speak ill of him that is my husband? Ah, poor my lord, what tongue shall smooth thy name, When I, thy three hours' wife, have mangled it? But wherefore, villain, didst thou kill my cousin? That villain cousin would have killed my husband.” (3.2.99-101). This shows that Juliet is passionate about Romeo, because first of all, she says that she was wrong to say bad things about her husband.

Determination oftentimes makes us who we are as a person. It is something that is embedded deep inside the human nature. Determination is essentially the “steering wheel” of a person. It is up to the “driver” whether they want to take the effortless street or the harsh road on the mountain. Those who take the more challenging road usually results into a better reward and feeling in contrast to the boring and usual road. Humans, like any other species, would prefer to take the path of least resistance. It is because of love that Juliet risked her parents' disapproval to not marry Paris and Romeo risked the danger of being killed by Capulet's kinsmen to go to see her. Yet again, this shows the inner struggle of Romeo and Juliet.

Juliet is a character with many traits, but one that is not talked about often is her determination. She has many ways she shows this trait, but most people don’t talk about any of them. Besides that Juliet is a young 13 year old girl. She has long brown hair and usually wears many long dresses. She doesn’t have a big outlook on life besides her parents wanting her to get married.

This entails that Romeo and Juliet should love each other maturely and they will be able to love each other for a very long time. If Romeo and Juliet were truthful towards their families from the very beginning, then they would have been able to avoid their unexpected deaths.
