A young girl was murdered on October 31st (Halloween), 2005. Brendan Dassey was accused of murdering the female photographer along with his uncle, Steven Avery. The pair were convicted on April 25, 2007 after a nine day trial Steven Avery, was charged by the local police decades before this for rape and attempted murder. After serving 18 years DNA evidence proved that he did not commit the crime and he was released. After being released Steven Avery filed a lawsuit against the county police department. De Soto’s exact date of birth is unknown. Based on my sources it was some were between 1496 and 1501. He was born in Jerez de los Caballeros, Spain. The areas they encountered were inhabited by natives. De Soto led many raids on the natives. Due to this, his reputation grew. He became a captain, because of this in 1520. As Davila’s representative, de Soto was expected to explore for land and riches. De Soto explored many areas, including present day Costa Rica and Honduras. In 1524, de Soto conquered Nicaragua and became alcalde, Alcalde means mayor, and of course his adventures didn’t stop there.

Amanda Knox is an American student who was studying abroad in Italy when was accused and convicted of murdering her roommate, Meredith Kercher, and was found innocent of the crimes after serving four years in an Italian prison. The scrutiny surrounding this case is one of media influence and how it set her fate. Knox was not able to get a fair trial in Italy because of the negative image the media painted of her. With no concrete evidence, people believed she was guilty because of the horrible and twisted opinions of her in the media.

On the 2nd of November 2007 Merideth Kercher, a british student studying in Perugia, Italy, was found dead in her bedroom. Kercher shared the house with Amanda Knox, an American also in Perguia to study and two other Italian women. Initially three people were arrested for the murder, Knox, her boyfriend Solleccito and Lambumba. Lumumba was released and another man, Rudy Guede, was arrested. Knox's original sentence for Kercher's murder was 26 years, Solleccito 25 and Guede 30 (The Guardian, 2011). Stories of santanic rituals and the murder being touted as a sex game gone wrong was the story first presented by police and media (Injustice in Perugia). He was originally from Oakland California U.S.A but moved to New Zealand when some musicians invited him to do some live concerts. When he was 11 yrs old, the Oakland Symphony Orchestra performed his arrangement: Stardust, and by the time he was in high school, he was working five times a week and earning more than his father. November 2, 2007, was a very sad day due to the murder of Meredith Kercher. This is the day Amanda Knox and Raffaele Sollecito lives were forever changed. This murder took place in Italy and through this case the Criminal and Justice Systems were found to be very different from country to country. This case specifically brought light how the United States and Italy are different when it comes to finding justice for committing a murder. These differences consist of an examination of justice, structure of the court systems and the use of evidence for conviction.

Amanda Knox by Brian McGinn and Rod Blackhurst documents the trial, conviction and acquittal of Amanda Knox for the murder of her foreign exchange roommate in Italy. The film includes interviews with her codefendant and ex- boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito; the attorney for the man believed to have really been the murderer; the man who led the Italian investigation and Amanda Knox, herself. From the documentary we learn that Amanda Knox and Raffaele Sollecito were wrongfully convicted of the murder of Knox’s British roommate, Meredith Kercher. Amanda Knox does an admirable job of detailing the crucial facts of the case. The film, which often plays out like a narrative thriller, takes us back to the murder of Kercher in 2007 and does so with the use of police footage of the crime scene. It takes us through the ensuing media outrage, the false accusations, the trial and appeal, with contributions from those who were there. The film undeniably takes a pro-Knox stance because of how it focuses largely on its main characters, therefore illuminating how something like this can happen to anyone.
