3.3 Leadership & Direction
Leadership is important to survive through each and every kind of situation (Burrow, et al. 2007). The main leader of every company is the CEO, who is not only a president but also a chairman. The strong leadership of the company is the reason that it has continued in achieving right place in list of the “World’s Most Ethical Companies” which is held by Ethisphere Institute. The CEO is regarded several times by Fortune, Ethisphere Institute and Glassdoor, as world’s greatest leaders”. Vice President very often said that the employees of the company are the reason he comes to work every day and manage everything in perfect way (Starbucks News, 2014).
3.4 Motivation
The main reason behind the success as well as growth of the Starbucks is the high rate of hard work shown by the workers. This is the reason that it was the first company who introduced the right and benefits for the part time workers. Pensions, grocery shopping discounts, healthy environment and stock options are the basic opportunities offered by the company (Starbucks, 2014). The company make full use of the intrinsic as well as extrinsic elements in order to keep their workers motivated all the time. Different surveys are held to measure the motivation of the workers. The company also believes in providing equal
Starbucks can raise the salaries of the employees according to the standard of living in the particular city and compensate for hours of overtime. As dissatisfied staff does not go along with the principle of always friendly and helpful employees, there is a great urge to implement changes. Leaving this problem unsolved, Starbuck´ special image will vanish.
In the first stage, the overview background of Starbucks will be introduced. Secondly, the viewpoints of Starbucks and the strategies, which are used by the company to make their teamwork performance well, are going to discuss. Next, the effectiveness of Starbucks teamwork strategy will be point out. In the end, there is a conclusion about the effect of policies in motivation and teamwork.
Starbucks started its growth in the early 1990s, with a game plan for Atmosphere, Quality Coffee, Customer Service, and Partner (employee) Satisfaction. Customers find the stores Welcoming and friendly for a great place to meet friends for a great cup of coffee or a local place for a great cup of coffee and a good book. Starbucks worked with coffee growers to offer a consistent brew and enforcing standards that have become the industry’s norms. Starbucks have put a lot into their training program to ensure properly trained employees to provide that consistent cup of coffee as well as improve employee retention. Starbucks believed in happy employees would promote a better experience for the customer. Since the 90s Starbucks have followed their 3 step plan. 1. Atmosphere: Every time you walk into a Starbucks, you know you will be greeted with a smile and a friendly attitude. 2. Continuity of Brand and Product: Every Starbucks has a similar feel, and your drink order will taste the same whether you are in New York or Spain. 3. Employee Satisfaction and Training: The training of the staff, in both how to be personable with customers and knowledge of the product offering
starbucks Corp., an international coffee and coffeehouse chain based in Seattle, Washington, has expanded rapidly since its opening in 1971. These outrageous success was due to its well-developed strategy vision which lay out the company's strategic course in developing and strengthening its business. Starbucks is a global corporation that sells authentic coffee in 30 countries, reporting revenues of nearly $5.1 billion in 2006. The main goal of Starbucks is to embrace diversity by applying the highest standards of excellence. Starbucks strives to perfect the relationship with the working class by making the service as fast as possible because they believe that every customer has their own personal rate. One
Leadership is common in all living beings. In all spheres of life some form of leadership exists i.e. in politics, social groups and the corporate world. Leadership skills are influenced by values, beliefs, ethics and character (Para 6, Sharma & Jain, 2013). There is a difference between the functions of management and a leader. Management generates order within the organization through processes,
During my research for this paper I learned that there are five key Factors of organizational leadership which are, Worldview, Strength, communication, ethics and leadership. Worldview is a complex image created from the different ways which people view the world. It is not focused on identity, political stance, or religious viewpoints, although it does include these (Technologies, 2017). This compiles everything a person thinks about the world, joining together the real and the indefinable. Worldview can be described by attitudes, opinions, beliefs, and ideas that influence people. Additionally, organizational leadership requires an understanding of the combined worldview of the organization, which consists of the many various and sometimes conflicting worldviews of the people within that organization (Technologies, 2017). A great leader is someone who can see the strength in others and themselves and use those strengths to their advantage, and at the same time work around weaknesses. Strength can be defined as consistent, near perfect performance in an activity. A person should perform an activity at approximately a 95% rate of
Tony Hsieh's philosophy is “Employees happiness is a natural-by product that leads to profits, passion, and purpose, for the individual and the company” (Tony, 2012). Tony Hsieh is able to gather people around him and influence and motivate them to join his team and work to achieve objective. In order to achieve this Hsieh and his team created the 10 Core Values of Zappos:
An effective leader is defined as a person who is followed by the others, in other words “leadership is a process of influencing others to achieve organizational goals, creating a vision for others and having the power to translate the vision into realism.” Leadership is a skill in which the leader tries to modify and shape the behavior of others. It has been understood throughout the history and culture that people had been looking towards leaders for assurance in case of uncertainty, threat or the task had been completed. A leadership is a true picture of people’s emotions. Leaders have to play a major role in an organization related to achieve his goals.Producing and output of the employees. The
Who are CEO’s? What is the role of a CEO? What characteristics does a CEO possess? These are questions that may stand out in the minds of subordinates who daily do work and seek to achieve results on the behalf of the CEO. As a bottom line, for whom does people work for other than the CEO and their ultimate goal is to provide results on behalf of the company, ultimately the CEO. The role of the CEO is to provide a vision for people to work towards and achieve. Proverbs 29:18 says it best, “Where there is no vision, the people perish.”
From the study of GE as a company and Jack Welch as the CEO, you gain a very clear picture an effective a leader drives an organization forward. According to Goleman’s 6 Leadership styles, Jack Welch’s style is more of a “pacesetting” and “coaching” style where he inspires those under him, sets the expectations and continuously looks to all areas of the organization for its future leaders (Benincasa). It comes down to one simple method: get rid of unnecessary hierarchy, and promote the empowerment of the lowers levels in an organization. When using this method of cultivating new leaders, any organization can not only succeed, but sustain for decades.
The company has also developed a structure and control system. With the realization that human capital holds a vital role in the development and sustainability of any institution, that of Starbucks included, it has taken to task to protect the same. To develop this, the company has an elaborate system that ensures the production levels of the company are met with pride. This like other leaders in the same has entailed ensuring they have an empowering corporate culture, topped by ensuring their employees enjoy competitive benefits.
The leadership is a large reason why the company is so successful. Without this intelligent style of leadership, the company would become disorganized and end up losing profit, causing their customers to stray towards other competitors.
Lastly, for the process issues, the company’s strategies and precesses need to be examined. In these issues, the employees of Starbucks will be affected most, as in Starbucks, nearly all of its employees (include part-timers) can buy its shares since the ‘Bean Stock Plan’ in 1999 and the company calls its employees as partners, therefore, any decisions to be made inside the company would affect all of its employees consequently. There are some constraints related to its resources like the cost of its materials, such as the coffee beans, the rent of its coffee shops when the company considered to open more shops and wages of its part time employees. When we look at Starbucks’ income statement, an evidence showed that there was a steady growth in the Starbucks’ revenue and net income from 2002 to 2004, meanwhile, the company has also received an increasing flow from the stock market, such the investors include both its employees who have brought the shares and the outsiders had made good profits from the company. During this period, the company is able to satisfy its employees and grow constantly which is due to its proper operation and management. When we look at the table of benefits to part-time workers and full-time works in US and compare
To be welcoming, knowledgeable, considerate, and involved are main components of its corporate culture, Starbucks is concentrate on make good work conditions and respect people, it enable employees to give superior work. It calls employees “partners” and presenting a dynamic work place in year 2010, 150000 people applied for a job responding to Starbucks branding. It views training and developing team. As said in “indicates that fewer than 50% of employees believe in their company’s brand idea, and even less are actually equipped to deliver to on it” John F. Marshall. Starbucks changes its perspective from starting from outside view on customers, they concentrating internally on the team by motivate and guiding them. it prepare different types of programs to develop its employee to teach them about the history of Starbucks and its corporate culture, Core 1 and 2 to learn the technical skills, Supervisor program for how have a leadership role, district manager training. Starbucks use six “differentiators” that made up a very directive internal playbook for change. Instead of external message and lead to significant and long-term efforts
