In recent years, the debate over same-sex marriage has grown into a nationwide controversy, reverberating into the halls of congress, at the white house, in dozens of state and legislature and courtrooms, and in the rhetoric of election campaigns at both the national and state levels. As the debate rages on, the American religious community remains deeply divided over the issue, and over the morality of homosexuality. The debate has grown from an issue that occasionally arose in a few states to a national and even worldwide controversy.

As noted, the technical legal question to be addressed is whether the federal government or individual states have the right to legalize or prohibit same-sex marriage. To claim that this exact question is increasingly a public concern is to understate the issue. It may be ironic but, as the controversy has grown in recent years, there seems to be more of a demand from the society that the issue be settled once and for all, and for that eyes turn to federal authority. This came to a head in the presidential campaigns of 2013, as same-sex marriage became a “hot button” issue actually defining voter sympathies as either liberal or conservative (Levendusky 42). In plain terms, the Mitt Romney campaign directly appealed to conservative populations opposed to, or perceived as opposed to, gay marriage; the Obama reelection efforts not unexpectedly countered this with an appeal to more liberal factions, which typically favor same-sex unions. The differences in approach aside, the clear fact remains that the nation was emphatically looking to its highest leadership to make a decision, which in turn would lead to federal recognition or denial of same-sex marriage.

A same-sex marriage is a hot topic in today’s politics and society. Our views are changing each day as our culture is changing. Today nearly fifty percent of American’s support same-sex marriages. We are changing our views to be more accepting of all and that is why party stances on this issue are very subject to change.

Probably the most common ways of presenting one’s opinion is writing an editorial for a newspaper. In writing these positions, the author has to think of a clear and clever way to persuade his audience to agree with him. All editorials, at their core, follow the same formula. One example of an editorial to break down is a recent one written by the New York Post’s Editorial Board on the NFL’s rules.

The focus of the workshop was newspapers and their content such as reports and editorials. We identified the editorial line of a newspaper and looked at how the editorial is a letter written by the editor and how it can demonstrate different opinions. We looked at letters to the editor and how they were used as primary sources. We discovered as they are written by readers discussing issues, they help provide a useful insight on people’s concerns. We debated the benefits of newspapers such as that they give us a snapshot of peoples perceptions at the time. Limitation of using newspapers are that they are biased and generally contain propaganda.

This article was written after the issue of net neutrality laws had been explored in court and ruled. This is important to the piece because some biased could be skewed towards the law that has been passed. This article does include the use of one visual. It is an image of the FCC chairman Tom Wheeler during a net-neutrality hearing. This may impact the reader in a way that veers them for or against the FCC. People make a first impression within mere seconds of seeing someone. Depending on an individual’s response to seeing Tom Wheeler, the reader might make assumptions that cause them to be for or against the topic before even beginning to read the article. Although this article does take effect of a visual that may or may not show biased towards or against the topic at hand, it also uses a serious tone. Not much biasedness can be seen throughout this article. It seems as though the author has done his best job towards not giving any personal view on the topic and just presenting information on the topic. It can however be noted that the tone of the article makes it seem as though the topic is of great importance, using sentences such as “The Federal Communications Commission’s new net-neutrality rules will face an important federal-court test in December…” and “The effort is aimed at preventing broadband providers from…”. Although the topic may be important to many people and affect the majority, the author is showing some bias here due to the fact that some may not agree that the topic is “important” or that there is “effort” being put into this

Same sex- marriage is still the topic of many peoples conversation across the country. Citizens, divided by politic party, are very passionate about how they feel about it. The president didn’t approve of it at first, but now he finally accepts same- sex marriage, the Judicial System uses its power to dictate to the States, forcing them to accept same- sex marriage. Both houses of Congress continue to debate what marriage means.
