Air pollution has become a problem in our world today. Living in a busy city, I am curious to know, how polluted is our city air. To test this I am doing an experiment using petroleum jelly and flashcards. These flashcards will collect air particulate matter that consists of organic chemicals, metals, and soil or dust particles. I will put each flashcard in 4 different locations around the community. One will be put at the park, at my home, at school and by the freeway. My results were an interesting find. One location that I thought would have the least particles had more than I thought. Although my findings were interesting, my experiment had gotten tampered with.

Justification: The lesson has a great activity that uses geoboards and rubber bands to make quadrilaterals.

I think that Georgia has an air pollution problem. From our cars, our hairsprays, the uses of heaters and air conditioners, and even the use of our washers; these items can potentially pose a threat to our air quality. There are approximately 10.43 million people that live in Georgia, and most everyone of them uses an item that contributes to the gas in our air. Every morning, people get ready for school or work. We turn on our lights, as warmer weather approaches we may turn on our air conditioners, we style our hair with hairspray, and we turn on our cars. Each of these processes producing gas.

‘Smog’ is the outcome of the combination of the words ‘smoke’ and ‘fog’. Photochemical smog is the most common throughout the United States in large cities and mainly consists of ozone located in the troposphere. Photochemical smog occurs when sunlight reacts with pollutants in the air released by factories and car exhaust emissions. Smog plays a major role in environmental and personal health issues such as low birth rate, respiratory irritation, reduction of lung function, aggravated asthma, chronic lung diseases, reduction of immune system effectiveness, photosynthesis reduction, and the possibility of ecosystem deterioration. Therefore, because of very high amounts of smog in major U.S. cities such as Los Angeles combined with its harmful effects, smog is the greatest ecological issue facing the U.S. today.
