Seascape As A Seascape

I think the artist is able to communicate the bad condition of the ship and its crew is in. The mood of the work is scary and gloomy. The design and intensity of the waves, the changing weather, and the ships in the ocean seem to make the scene come alive. It really conveys a since of naturalism in the painting the way it depicts the environment around the ship.

This painting is so realistic and painted with such precision and detail that he must’ve wanted us to see this place exactly how he did, with great beauty and light. The local colors are vibrant and cool yet still make you smile because it reminds you of a warm summer day. The use of two contrasting colors, the blue of the water and sky and the tan of the cliffs and couds, make the tan color stand out creating such a visually pleasing and dynamic effect. The organic fluffy clouds and the ripples in the water convey a peaceful sense to the scene. The pompous cliffs stand solidly contributing to the historical importance of this location. The artist captures the illusion of depth through atmospheric perspective; as the object gets farther it encompasses less detailed contributing to the descriptive nature of it. Since the left side of the painting is much heavier than the right this painting is asymmetrical. Your eye tends to gravitate towards the cliffs on the left because of their size and bright color which emphasize the cliffs. This emphasis creates a focal point that the viewer is immediately compelled to look at.

The Painting I chose is called “Mixtec Culture.” And it was painted by Diego Rivera in 1942, Mexico. It’s a Fresco style painting, which is “a wall painting technique that has been used for large scale murals since ancient times” (Getlein 159). This entire painting is an homage to the culture of Mexico, specifically the Mixtec people, and that’s what I love about it. The Mixtec people were renowned for their artwork so it’s fitting that Rivera depicts a peaceful community of artists such as mask and jewelry makers. One artwork that I have chosen to write about is Harriet Tubman by Aaron Douglas. I have selected this artwork because I am drawn to its color. In addition, I have a strong admiration for the subject matter. Looking at this artwork relaxed me and made me feel at peace as I was emotionally hypnotized by the color green. Even after looking at this artwork for a prolonged period of time, my admiration for it did not change. This artwork seems to represent freedom and being at peace.

I drew inspiration from the creative indigenous cultures and the drama of the scenery. I painted many impressionist works of art during our travels. On our journey back we traveled through Santa Fe. On this journey I made contact with the artist community within the Museum of Mexico.

I went to the Art Walk event in Newberg and stopped by the Art Elements Gallery. I wanted to find a work that calls to me. At first I didn’t find much. The art was nice, but I didn’t get any special feelings on them. Finally, I spotted an oil painting on a wrapped canvas. It was called Full Moon. The work was created by Oregon citizen, Marilyn Higginson. It’s still hard to express what I felt when I saw this painting, but I felt a sense of peace when I saw the tranquil setting of the painting. My aesthetic scanning will give a description of the work, analyze the craftsmanship, the art elements, the art principles, and give my interpretation on the work.

The image shows a sailing ship, it could be an optimistic view of the painter expressing their particular direction of their goals and how we make choices in life. Or goals that are merely drifting away because it is difficult to get what we want out of life at times. The first piece, “A Choppy Estuary,” created by Hulk Abraham, was created with the use of wet media, this one being painted with oil paints. The picture consists of four ships, clouds, and some people on nearby land. It uses various colors, with major focus on various reds and blues, to place emphasis on the ship on the front right of the piece.

We can also see the use of black shades to create a hole at the bottom part of the rock. With his excellent use of colors, we can identify the good, healthy and green grass from the bad, unhealthy, brown grasses. Looking beyond the main focus of the painting, he uses colors to separate the sky from the land in the background creating a solid form of perspective on the painting. He also uses colors to create water forms as seen behind the young character. Now, for the sky, he uses shades of white to magnificently differentiate the thick clouds from the light ones. He also uses this to create a source to light to the whole area. All these put together creates a splendid, realistic and familiar atmosphere for the viewers to relate with.

I chose to write about the art piece by Thomas Moran after going to the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston. While walking through the buildings I saw a mass of artwork that ranged from gold artifacts to paintings. I have to say that it was a lot to take in but I chose the painting by Thomas Moran called the Stranded Ship on East Hampton Beach. I liked the painting with the raging water crashing on the beach with the stranded ship in the distance. I really like the contrast of the dark waves with the white spray on the beach and white caps on the waves. It seems to tell how dangerous the waves can be but there is a lot of flow. The waves seem to be choppy but big and dangerous but I can feel the sense of movement and the wind blowing. It

The portrait I choose to discuss is the Magnolias on Gold Velvet Cloth by Martin Johnson Heade. This portrait I believe is an oil, canvas due to the full vibrant color. What I like about this portrait is that it’s a beautiful flower. I am infatuated with flowers; I love having many things that are designed or have flowers printed. As I saw the portrait in the museum it made me visualize know suddenly what to write on my museum paper. I have a magnolia tree in my backyard. I remember my childhood whenever I and my older brother use to play on the swings and every time I saw a magnolia flower I will make my brother get it for me because I love the smell of the flower it remains me of lemon scent.

This painting shows how close and codependent humans and nature were. How well humans worked together with one another and their world. How peaceful those that are close to nature are, which is why it (nature) must be celebrated and appreciated.

The painting I chose was a painting of Chrysanthemums by Pablo Picasso. It is a very simple and straightforward, yet captivating image. The way the petals on the flowers were painted are very interesting, each of them were created with unique stroke of the brush. Picasso obviously wanted viewers to focus only flowers as the foreground and background were left somewhat rugged and undetailed. At first it may be hard to notice, however, it can be seen that the source of light for the picture is on the left as the right side is painted with slightly darker colors. When positioned directly in front of the painting the flowers actually do not seem as flowers at all. Only until you move farther back will the blurry strokes of white and red actually
