It’s summertime, and the perfect time to hit the pool, or in Colorado even a lake or reservoir. There’s nothing better than a relaxing dip in the cool water on a hot summer’s day. However, did you know that everyday 10 people die from unintentional drowning? Drowning in fact ranks fifth among the leading causes of unintentional injury death in the U.S. Additionally, about 1 in 5 people who die from drowning are children ages 14 and younger, and for children in this age group drowning is the 2nd leading cause of unintentional injury death. When you are out enjoying recreational water activities it’s important to be aware of all important safety measures. Sadly, it can take only 20-60 seconds before a drowning victim sinks underwater.
My head went back, and my feet popped up. I felt the frigid water seep into my hair, and soak my scalp. I heard my mom’s soft voice trying to keep me calm, and reminding me to keep my bellybutton up to the air as if some puppet master was holding it up by a string. Every time my mom tried to let me float by myself, my feet would begin to sink. It was as if I was a weight on a fishing line pulling it down into the dark abyss. I couldn’t seem to stay relaxed, I was as stiff as a two by four. That fire was still burning my inner forest deep within me. I remember startling myself out of the float, because I did not feel my mom’s hands supporting me anymore. I scrambled for footing on the bottom of the pool floor feeling the rough pool floor slip past my toes a couple times before I got the traction to stand up. I was kind of confused for a moment as I tried to get the water out of my eyes and nose. My family was now all out in the pool area, and I realized the moment I have been dreading for the past few years of my short life was here and I knew it. My family was going to have me jump off the diving board, in hopes that it would dissipate my excruciating fear of water. My heart was beginning to pound through my
As I jumped into the water, I only had one thing on my mind: saving the victim. As I swam towards her I saw her head slip under. I called for a backboard before I dove beneath the surface to bring her head above the water. I
After this incident, I was presented with three options. The first option was to speak firmly to him about staying away from pools so it would make a big impression. The second option was to resolve to having Jason wear a safety vest whenever he is around pools. The third option was to decide to enroll Jason in toddler swimming lessons, which emphasize safety, holding your breath, swimming to the edge of the pool, and holding on. I chose the third option. I felt it necessary to sign him up for toddler swimming lessons. Studies show that registering your child in a swimming class to learn how to swim helps reduces the risk of childhood
Several first aid treatment could have been done to the couples to reverse their decreasing blood pressure condition if they were found above the water
It’s August 21s,t 2015 a week before school starts. We were at the Wisconsin Dells for the end of summer trip. It all started with Will, putting His feet in the ice cold water that feels like it belongs at the bottom of the Atlantic ocean. Will, plumped down on the tub that feels like a bean bag holding itself up he explained. Only if he knew to hang on tight, Will was pushed down the slide (In the tube of course) by the employee that sent me flying down the slide like he was soaring in the sky like a bird. On a sharp turn my tub flipped and Will, landed on his stomach hitting the plastic that’s sticking out of the bottom of the sliding feeling like small needles puncturing my stomach he explained. Will came soaring out the end of the tube to only be told he had to stay on the tube next time or Will would be kicked out of the water park for the employee's accident, Will tried to explain his story but they didn’t believe it. What if Will or any other kid was soaring down the slide and hit their head on the side of the slide going down at 30-40 miles an hour? It can be a tragic accident leading to Brain Damage, Concussions or even Death.Water slides should get more precautions for safety reasons.

A lot of things interested me. All the statistics were really helpful in helping me understand the lead causes of deaths and crashes. I learned that the leading cause of the teens death was teens running off the road. I thought that the leading cause was going to be distracted driving because a lot of teens are always on their cell phones texting or changing music. I also didnt know that the leading causes of crashes was following another driver too closely. I also thought that the distracting would be higher on the list but it wasnt as I expected. I also didn't know that the leading cause of death to 15-20 year olds was driving fatalities. I learned that you have a much greater chance of surviving a crash and not getting hurt as much if you
Canadians love being near the water. Swimming, boating, water skiing, fishing and various other watersports are common forms of entertainment for Canadians, but not everyone who participates is fully prepared for their water fun. The 2016 Ontario Drowning Report states that 32% of drownings happen while swimming, and 42% of those drownings are caused by the victim not being able to swim. Swimming is an essential skill, and every Canadian should learn how to do it. Learning to swim is easy, can save your life or someone else’s, and can have many health benefits!
Specific Purpose Statement: To inform my audience about the history and development of swim along with its applications.
Since the beginning of time, death by drowning has taken millions of lives and thousands of live each year. Society has made incredible strides when it comes to preventing such a death but in order to save one human from drowning another human must put his life in danger. Lifeguards have saved countless lives with safety equipment and on sight help however lifeguards have also been too late to prevent these horrific occurrences. In the year 2016, there is hope on the horizon, drone lifeguards. This will revolutionize, not only beaches but also any areas that are potentially hazardous for humans. Other previous methods of lifeguard safety was a physically fit human who was certified to save another human in the and a floatation device, also some lifeguards used jet skis of other forms of quick transportation in water to save surfers or body boarders. These have been proven to be affect yet it is still putting a safe individual is a dangerous situation to save a human who is in danger. There is an act of chivalry and honor in this way of lifeguarding but if drones can save even more lives than pervious methods then it could change the world as well as saving a lot of people and their families from the pain of losing a loved one. The idea of using drones has a safety device poses a few questions. What is a drone? What are the mechanics in a drone lifeguard? How reliable is this device? Can is cause a human more harm than good in a dangerous situation? What are
Thesis/main topic – Learning how to swim is essential for being around water, it will help strengthen a person confidence, improve your physical fitness, and provide an area for stress release.
My topic drowning and it proceeded to cover the statistics of drowning, how to prevent drowning by overcoming risk factors, and how to preform CPR presented by Jeff Ellis & Associates Inc. techniques in five to six minutes to fulfill the time requirement in the outline. I decided to go with drowning due to my prior experience as a lifeguard in 2015 at The Big Splash which is in Grove City, Ohio; this would provide a level of confidence in that I had ample training on how to conduct CPR under extreme conditions. I also chose this topic due to my analyzation of the feedback provided by my fellow classmates as they were, overall, excited to learn how to preform CPR and get background information on drowning. There was also consideration about the age of the audience as I assumed they had little to no background knowledge on how to save another individual’s life in a dangerous situation and preform it properly.
Support 2: Open Swimming- Open swimming like at sea, lake or river can increase the chances of drowning because the water currents are not stable like in pools. They are more dynamic and can pull you along with it. Aquatic animals like Jelly fishes, sharks, crabs, crocodiles, alligator, etc. are other threats as they can harm you physically. You can also injure yourself while diving into shallow water. But these effects can be stopped by swimming at a public pool and most have swim equipment such as pull buoys, kick boards, and fins to help increase your performance.
Lifeguard classes were 2 days that consisted of CPR training, swimming laps, and learning rescues. When we first began, there were three of us sitting at a table on the pool deck with an outdated rolling TV. I was handed a 100-page lifeguarding manual my eyes bulged out of my head, the butterflies in my stomach multiplied. Looking through the book, watching rescues and talking through every question I had calmed my nerves. But the statistics of drowning still haunted my mind, 360,000 people died from drowning in 2015 (WHO). All though at the YMCA in Red Oak hasn’t had a drowning,
According to Baker, O'Neill, Ginsburg & Li (1992), drowning rates are reported to be higher in rural areas as compared to urban or sub-urban areas and rural areas suffer more because of the lack of medical care and emergency treatment. It has been reported that 60 to 90% of child drownings of less than 5 year old occurs in residential swimming pool (Baker et.al, 1992). Wintermute & Present (1992) reported that two-third’s of the drownings occurs in children home swimming pool and another’s third’s occur in neighbour’s swimming pool. Moreover, it was also reported the child is supervised by their parents for less than 5 minutes. In order to make
