The two featured articles had opposing positions on Secretary Gates. Finel's article shows him failing as a strategic leader; while Boot's showcases a more positive image of his accomplishments in the position. As I look to identify his strengths and weaknesses, using the strategic leadership competencies in the SLP, I feel that his greatest strength was problem management and his greatest weakness was negotiation. Secretary Gates has many strengths, but problem management was the one that seems most dominant. In his 4 1/2 year tenure as Secretary of Defense, he demonstrated that he could handle difficult problems swiftly. Whether it was pushing for improved equipment on the battlefield (such as unmanned aerial vehicles or MRAPs) that
A great leader who I admire is Colin Powell. He was born on April 5th, 1937 to immigrant parents, Luther and Maud Powell, from Jamaica. He was raised in the south Bronx and graduated from Morris High School in 1954. While studying geology at a community college he decided to join into the Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) program. He graduated from the program in 1958 and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army. He married his wife, Alma Vivian Johnson in 1962 and they have three children together.
Dr. Condoleezza Rice was sworn in as Secretary of State on January 25, 2005. She is a clear example of a leader, which possesses certain traits that have led her to where she is today. In order to evaluate her as a leader, it is necessary to look at different aspects of her leadership. It is important to examine her personality traits and values, ethical challenges she will face, her candidacy, her leadership style, and her dark-side traits.
Most people recognize Colin Powell as one of the most admired and popular leaders of our time. Often times in leadership you will not always be popular or admired, so what makes this leader different? It was those core values ingrained in him at early age by his parents that would shape him as a future leader (Koltz & Powell, 2012). As with any great leader he’s had his fair share of trials and tribulations, but like an infantry officer he continued to press forward. Colin Powell has been a visionary and ethical leader since the early days of Persian Gulf to Washington’s corridors (Roth, 1993). Throughout my research he has become a personal inspiration for me due to his ability to inspire and motivate those around him. Let’s take a brief look into his background to provide a better understanding of his leadership style.

was very ironic to the content of the whole article. He stands at a Bar of an all-black VFW and
General Gates also displayed leadership by issuing orders requisitioning new supplies. He ordered better food, clothing and equipment as well as requiring inspections of Soldier support facilities such as hospitals and encampments.7 General Gates desired a ready and able force. He knew that if he took care of the men's needs, he would get their full effort. Resupplies began arriving and the morale was lifted. Soldiers stated that Gates' arrival raised them as if by magic and they began to hope and then to act.8 General gates saw the immediate need to boost the morale of his men. By leading the show of support for their well being and readiness, General Gates was empowering them to affect the outcome of the battle.
The Department of Defense is one of the oldest executive departments of the executive branches in the United States of America and is in control of national security and the Armed Forces of the United States. More than 3 million employees embody the Department of Defense and control it’s day-to-day operations and is well funded with a budget of $680 billion thanks to a bill that passed 68-29 in 2010 . Under the Secretary of Defense there is a very powerful Chief Information Officer of the Department of Defense, Teri Takai. Teri is responsible for developing strategic plans and to align with the department’s mission and the mission of the United States. The CIO of the Department of Defense interested me because of the decisions having to be made affect so many users. Every decision Teri makes has to be spot on and has to take in consideration, how it will hurt or benefit other departments or national security. The goal of the CIO is to unify the information management and to advance the technology vision of the department.
Key holder to the most classified secrets in the world, former member of the CIA and the National Security Council (NSC), and the man who was in the war room with President Obama; watching live streamed footage of the raid on Osama Bin Laden’s compound. Who is this man? Brought in by President Bush to be the Secretary of Defense in 2006, and served under President Obama where he helped find and bring down Osama Bin Laden. Robert M. Gates writes his inside experiences as Secretary of Defense during the war on Terror and brings you through some of his toughest decisions. In Secretary Gates memoir titled Duty, Gates struggles with sending more troops to fight against the war on terror and dealing with the after effects of his decisions, such as

Defense Secretary Ash Carter has good new for Iraq War veterans struggling to pay back reenlistment bonuses and benefits that nearly 10,000 California National Guard soldiers received for agreeing to reenlist for six more years and serve in Afghanistan or Iraq. The bonuses were given in error a decade ago and the Pentagon demanded repayment plus interest, even going so far as to threaten veterans with wage garnishments or tax liens if they couldn't repay the money. While Secretary Carter announced the Pentagon will stop collecting monthly payments from soldiers, the debts are not waived yet, nor is there any word about what will happen to veterans who already paid their debt. Secretary Carter did made it clear that there is no blanket waiver
His inability to understand and implement effective close air support to ground forces allowed the Germans to maintain competitive advantage. Eisenhower gained better understanding of the environment through improved decision making and stakeholder inclusion. Strategic leaders recognize a joint decision making process is required to improve the chances of success.
Henry Louis Gates, was a highly educated writer who wrote the essay “In The Kitchen”. Gates remanences when living in Piedmont, West Virginia, his mother did many people’s hair for quick cash in her kitchen. The people went to have “the very kinky bit of hair at the back of your head, where your neck meets your shirt collar” straightened, Gates states. The kinky hair in back of their heads, referred to as the kitchen in his culture. It was impossible to get rid of the kitchen, it was permanent, only possible ways of fixing costed much to afford. The way Gate’s mother was able to tame the kitchen was by using a “hot comb”; a pair of prongs, heated on top of the stove. Gates despised the kitchen because the politics of “good” and “bad” hair it
It is certain that when you are exposed to an author’s work you want to categorize that author into a certain group. Perhaps this practice of categorizing a composer can help the reader understand the piece of literature. Henry Gates has helped understand and criticize many African American Literature authors that are exposed through the canon in secondary English Education. As a teacher, it is essential to introduce Postcolonialism into the classroom as well as postcolonialist critics such as Henry Gates Jr. Furthermore, as I teach my African American literature class I have found myself searching for supplemental material to suppose the authors that I introduce
Lastly, I will also show that Ms. Rice and I share the goal of ethical leadership, but there have been times in both our careers when we have fallen into the ethical trap of Loyalty Syndrome and lacked Healthy Skepticism discussed during this course. Ms. Rice was blindly loyal and therefore, failed to question an Air Force General’s opinion regarding a routine mission that cost many lives. I too was loyal and failed to question my Chief during a routine Below-The-Zone (BTZ) murder board that cost many hours of work and respect.
Bill Gates is not only a genius, but also an innovator in education, technology, and philanthropy. A prodigy, Bill Gates shares an education fact with Abraham Lincoln, Henry Ford, Thomas Edison, and even his competitor Steve Jobs: no college degree. Instead, he devoted his time to his passion for technology, going on to create the most profitable technology company in the world. For much of the past decade, Gates allocated both his profit and attention to philanthropy. Evidence of his innovation, industry and curiosity can be seen at an early age.
