Introduction
For my Annotated Research Kit, I have explored Black and White (colours), semiotics and interactive design.
The first keyword I have explored is Black and White. This is an illustration style that I have up until recently, been using in my studio work, and in my own personal practices as a graphic designer. Black and White also fits in with the culture of today’s younger generation, in which their taste of visual style and graphic design preference fits in with my Black and White design style.
On a similar level, I used Black and White in an animation advertisement for the New Zealand Safe Campaign. My intention of using a Black and White watercolour style was to make the animation appear simple and appealing. I combined the idea of black and white with a watercolour visual style to help bring about the sense of a natural and real animation story about the sad life of pig farming today.
The second keyword I have explored is semiotics. Semiotics improves everyday life by simplifying matters and information through the interpretation of simple icons. Without this, people’s everyday life would be much difficult than today as we naturally learn faster and better through visuals and imagery.
My last keyword is interactive design, which is something that is always around us. From the way we interact with computers to apps from the Apple store to accessing the ATM and reading an online eBook.
Ultimately, interactive design is about finding a solution to a
Distinctively visual texts aim to manipulate the we perceive images critically affecting our interpretation of events and people we meet in our lives. Distinctively visual techniques are utilised in the ‘Run Lola Run’ directed by Tom Tykwer and the picture book ‘Red Tree’ written by Sean Tan. The way the distinctively visual is shown throughout these texts is through the use of motifs, different angle shots, colours, lighting and reading paths. These techniques aim to show the important themes in both texts such as time, hope and love.
My design capabilities progressed as I continued my exploration of the power of words and images through the production of a series of handbound artist’s books. In the production process of generating written content and conceptualizing aesthetics designs that addressed both form and function, I found intersectionality in my written and visual art practices.
The colors that I used for both of my ads were red, black, and white. I used red because red represents passion and energy. The color black was used in the background of the text slides for my commercial, and black is associated with high quality and power. On the text slides in my commercial I used a black background with white font to create a high contrast that made the text pop. Our school colors are also red, black, and white, which portrays school spirit in the ads.
I believe that the founder of abstract art was Wassily Kandinsky a Russian painter who was known to be a pioneer of color theory and he believed this was a way to communicate. As we know different colors have different meanings and form interesting designs, but mainly we have to target our audience with the perfect and interesting image. Our surroundings are in general colorful and that inspired me to create a colorful design. We learned about the political movements and development during the photography history and I believe that color was and still is associated to these political movements. Color has the power to subliminally convey values and this adds to
The two non-linguistic representations that I use in my classroom are graphic organizers and kinesthetic activities. Graphic organizers are a way that I can show students how to organize their thoughts. One way that I use graphic organizers in my classroom is for personal narratives-writing about small moments. We use a doughnut graphic organizer. The hole is used to identify the small moment and the doughnut itself is used to identify details about their moment. I have found using this graphic organizer to be beneficial during writer’s workshop because it helps the students see how big a small moment really is. It also helps students stay engaged and allows them to have a visual aid when writing their story. I desire to continue to use graphic
The field of semiotics exists because of the realization that society has a desire to create and produce signs because it serves as an important aspect and purpose to life. We are capable of performing semiosis and representation to demonstrate the knowledge in which we come to understand the world, and conversely, it is through the same process that the
Advertising has become one of the most powerful and effective tools that business uses to launch and brand products. Advertising is a form of communication used to persuade an audience to take some action with respect to products, ideas, or services. Everyday we are surrounded by advertisements, influencing us to make different purchases without our mind even realizing how much they really affect us. Advertising is available in many different mediums and communicated across many different forums. Of all of the forms of advertising, visual advertising has proven to be one of the most successful. Graphic designers have the ability to put subtle references and innuendos into your mind by utilizing different fonts, colors, and visual points
The first creative recommendation for the media plan on the print category is to use black and white ads instead of colour. The budget limitations only allows the ads that will run on the newspaper to be black and white on the Monday to Friday edition and the Saturday edition. The target audience has personal traits of being traditionalists for their social views (about 43.6%). As a result, the use of colour will have a slight impression on them and by taking advantage of traditional black and white we can appeal to people who have seeing ads on black and white for a longer period of time.
Summary: In this section titled “The Color Key,” author Robert Hirsh highlights the importance of using one’s own color preferences to craft a composition. He points out that a person’s individual preferences are not locked in place either. As people change, so do the colors that speak most strongly to them. The color choices that each photographer makes helps to highlight the different ways that each photographer sees a scene.
These essays leave the nature of artistic thinking and creativity puzzling, stopping short of probing just what is going on with all this symbol production and to what end. And while the stages of artistic development described by Mr. Gardner can be suggestive, the sequence of these stages seems at times little more than a general learning sequence for anyone getting acquainted with a new language or set of symbols, proceeding from incoherent babble to critical and reflective judgment.
In this essay I will try to evidence the natural evolution of readability and legibility in visual communication and how it’s progression reached its pinnacle before the beginning of post-modernism. I will look as far back as the first known instances of visual communication, the cave paintings, and target key elements to the evolution and progression of visual communication including ideograms, the alphabet, scribes, the printing press, slave ship diagrams, the Renaissance, Leonardo Da Vinci and the Avantgarde, before concentrating on the change from Modernism to post-modernism. In my essay readability refers to the ease in which we can read the piece and legibility discuses the message it is trying to convey.
Meredith Davis’s book “Graphic Design Theory” was published in September 2012 by Thames & Hudson. This book blends a study of historical thinking of design with contemporary / modern approach to it. It also suggests students to critically analyse their work and asks them to adopt the design theories to embellish their practical design work as it will help them construct better work. This book also helps in understanding the consumers and the history of Graphic Design and also talks about a range of theories and introduces a collection of concepts and sources for future use and reference. In this book, Meredith Davis talks about the relationship of visual representation to the contexts of design. It talks about focusing on the broad and long term aftereffects of design and not to design only for the moment and responding to prompt needs.
the interaction with the people and their needs. And accordingly the design which I made takes
Dorothy Parker’s “Arrangement in Black and White” is set during a dinner party for the host’s friend, Walter Williams, an African American musician. Though the party is celebrated in his name, most of the conversation takes place between the host and the main character, the woman with pink velvet poppies. From the conversation, the audience can deduce that though this woman admires Walter Williams’s musical talent, she is unable to let go of the racist sentiment against his African American heritage. The author adds a flavor of sophisticated cynicism as she makes this point clear by having the main characters ironically make frequent references concerning how “untroubled” she is about the color of his skin. This argument is further
Based on the findings that one has discovered in life itself, in essence, color helps with the flows of life in a way that it can determines your thoughts, emotions, and decisions. In my research I gained a vast amount knowledge and from what I’ve learned; now I can explain colors in depth, with a great amount of detail. If colors were non-existent, then, there would be a very grey look upon life. Colors brings forth light, and the light brings forth living. The world displays colors for a reason and it’s very important to life.
