Senior Year Challenges

As a senior I hope to accomplish many goals, some of them being in high school and some relating to college. A goal is an aim or a desired result, but may not always be achieved. Going into senior year I have aspirations of going to a good college and working for higher grades.

With a year full of hurdles I was set to overcome, senior year did not seem like the right time for me to defeat my dragon. My introverted qualities have grown tremendously over the course of my life due to traumatic events I have been forced to face on my own. Since adolescence, I have always been known as the “quiet girl” in the room. I always took this as a compliment, until recently, when I realized I was missing out on crucial events that would help prepare me for the future. Through careful consideration, I decided that senior year would be the ideal time to slay my dragon, introversion.

Challenges and obstacles are life defining moments in someone’s life that teaches them skills and responses that they can utilize and build upon for the duration of their lives. I would not necessarily call my challenge a moment, I would call it a period or season of my life where I had to learn how to cope with the many personalities of high school students, and differentiate who I would consider my friends. High school is a very stressful environment and peer pressure is very prevalent. Not only is there the fact that you may not attend a high school in the same town as you live, but inevitably, it thrusts you into a world of people you may not even know.

Junior year; considered the most difficult year of high school. Junior year wants to make senior year as relaxing and stress free as possible. Part of this preparation: community service and then writing a paper and making a presentation surrounding that service. Kennedy calls this project the integrated service learning (ISLE) project. For my ISLE project, I built houses in New Orleans through Habitat for Humanity, a nonprofit organization. I found that when hurricane Katrina and the Levis broke it left a tremendous amount left in its wake. Since the trip would knock all my service hours out in a week and I became interested in the project I went and worked on houses and learned a great deal culture and poverty

His shoulder was thrown in reverse and twisted, and left by his body which was driving forward almost completely leaving it behind. He jerked back as if the force would spring his arm back into place. Gravity took over his knees forcing them to buckle and hit the ground. Some might say he looked like newborn deer, fresh out the womb. His arm was left hanging with barely any support at all. His only support was his hand holding it closely to his side as if he could protect it from further harm. His arm looked like a gummy worm...except more flimsy. The adrenaline took over his body like a built in anesthesia, taking his mind off of the pain only for a short time. he didn 't even bother getting up as the other players scrambled to the huddle

As a nontraditional student as well as a Sophomore my goals as well as responsibilities are different from the typical student’s. As a father of three, including a six month old balancing my professional, academic, together with my personal life has been the most challenging aspect of returning to school.

Being a senior I had already expected that life won’t go that easy. Throughout my Junior year I was being prepared through my AVID class and from all the different articles, and activities we did in class. Kind of reality hasn’t hit me yet, I was making a huge list that marks all I wanted to accomplish in my senior year. But there is this thing called ‘stress’ that is invented and it began to slowly eating my brain away. Just a little stressed what I tell everyone who ask how am I doing. Stress is something we all need to be prepared for in our early stages in life but we can’t help it due to many trials and tribulations that come in our everyday life. For high school seniors like me some of them already developed this disease called, ‘senioritis’ if you haven’t known yet it's a disease that affects your mind, and body from being able to function properly due to the amount loads of work that you have to do. Stress as defined by Dr. Laura A. King is “the response of individuals to environmental stressors”. The biggest types of environmental stressor that a majority of adults are facing, will face, or have faced, are college and work. College is a time in someone’s life where they are faced with what the “real world” truly is. It can be a great time in one’s life where they have the opportunity to meet new people, experience new things, and find themselves for who they truly are. It is also a time where people are spending hundreds of dollars, they don’t have, on books, housing, rentals, classes, and so much more; they are also being shoved into a room with possibly fifty other young adults, they have never met, to learn new things or ideas and

Stress is a main aspect of the human condition, because everyone goes through a daily amount of stress, whether the problems come from school, family, even physical activities. The first time I felt a load of stress was earlier this year in fact, on a Thursday in September. I had many assignments due that day, and had a football game for band later as well. There was a reading check for “WHAP”, and the second I had seen the vocab and multiple choice questions my stomach started churning. There was sweat running down my face.... There were several times in which I felt like it would be easier to give up, but I knew I needed to get my diploma. The odds were against me . . . “you’re not going to graduate, you’re never going to do anything with your life,” my father would say, when we’d get into a disagreement. As much as I despised such words; eventually, I welcomed them with open arms. They sparked a motivation in me that I never knew I held before. I couldn’t wait to show him and everyone else who had ever doubted me, that I would

With the end of senior year approaching, I learned how to cope with my dragon, which is failure. I slayed my dragon in a sense which I am not as harsh or brutal on myself as I was before. I overcame my 'nightmare' of being rejected by colleges. I received full scholarship to a division one school for tennis. I learned how to apply myself to this magnificent sport that has brought me joy throughout my youth. As for Spanish, it flew by like a breeze, no hick-ups along the way. Failure still hasn't failed to bring stress along with it. Stress antagonizes me, but even with that heavy weight above my shoulders, it failed to bring me nothing but success during my senior year. Failure now brings me more endurance and strength to get me past hard patches

Stress is unavoidable, no matter the situation, location, or time; stress is always present. Stress is found in higher levels during the duration in which students attend college. It is predictably higher among college students, freshmans in particular, because of the extreme expectations set upon them by their parents and, of course, society. The need to please their parents, longing for success in life, and being able to sustain a reasonable income in the future, all of which falls into the hands of college students who are making critical decisions which may decide the outcome for a large portion of their lives. If these students end up hating their future jobs, the stress of having to go back into college to study for a new career

As a potential first generation college student being part of the People program will help me become more knowledgeable about college experiences. Also it would increase my chances of attending a university. Living in America as a Latina I encountered a lot of challenges. Among those challenges include languages barriers, identity problems and struggles coming from a working class family. I would like be productive during my summer.

Throughout my educational experience, I have endured countless hardships that made progress difficult at times. Although it was a struggle through my strong dedication to education, I have also earned a list of achievements for my hard work. These experiences from, failing two of my English classes, to excelling tremendously in mathematics, have molded me into the type of student I am today. I am a student with a growth mindset and, an optimistic outlook on education and, the bright future ahead. I now understand the impact that a positive mindset can have on your future. I am definitely proud of the student I have become. I feel like my journey is unique, but is also very relatable.

It was 2016, and I was finally a senior in high school. Being a senior in high school was something that I had dreamed of since my early middle school days, and at last, I was there. It was the last year in one of my least favorite environments, and I couldn’t wait to graduate and move away from the only place I had ever known. I had lived in the same town for seventeen years, and I had gone to the same school with the same people for thirteen years. I was looking forward to something new in my life. I was most excited for my senior year because it was the year that I was going to choose where I wanted to move away to and what school I wanted to spend the next four years of my life at. As the year moved along, I slowly realized that I wasn’t moving away and that I’d be staying home to attend college, which was one of the most difficult decisions that I ever had to make.
