The person that I interviewed was Roxanne Nowak. She is married to a thrower on our men’s track and field team. I was able to have a nice long phone call with her and learned a lot about how sexuality influenced her position in the mental health field.
Roxanne works extremely hard and could not stop talking about how rewarding her job really is. As a Licensed Professional Counselor, she deals with kids on a daily basis. She works for Northwest Journey, which is a Day treatment facility that meets with families and kids that range from Elementary to High School. The education program that they have is with the Stevens Point School district and is called Bridges. The company is private and they help the kids transfer skills into education. …show more content…

Some of the kids have been child abused and sexually abused. They also tend to come from rough home lives, where their parents may be struggling with drugs and alcohol. Many of the kids also come from other rough home lives. Some also come from foster homes. Regardless, all the kids are dealing with some sort of mental health issue, which can range from anger issues to suicide and everything in-between. Her main goal is that she can help the kids with their mental health issues and they will be able to transition back into the school environment.
She sees 19 kids every single week. That might not sound like a lot, but it actually is because the most she can legally see is 20 kids per week. She is extremely busy and on top of that she makes time to pursue more certifications that gives her more opportunities in her social working career. Though she is extremely busy, her favorite part about working in the mental health field is working with the kids and seeing them change. She stated, “I came from the big city where the environment made it very easy for me to be comfortable.” She also shared that she went through multicultural group which was a class that she took in grad school. Another thing that helped her comfort level was a support group she attended called PFLAG, which stands for Parents, Families, and Friends of Lesbians and Gays. Sexuality has still influenced her position in many ways. There have been circumstances where some kids have opened up about being gay. Along with that, other kids have opened up about being sexually active. There also have been patients of hers that have been pregnant. Roxanne pointed out that the world is becoming more accepting of these types of things and it is important that her patients know that they should feel comfortable sharing anything with
