The summer heat sizzles and hums as it shines upon our backs. We’d been on the beach since nine o'clock, and it's now high noon, our bellies grumble in protest, reminding us we need to check in with Dad. Until now we'd been working on our latest cure of boredom; but let's not jump ahead of ourselves, to understand this tale, one must start from the beginning. On a Tuesday morning in June, four children ponder what to do with their time, the day promising to be wonderful, the sky was azure blue, the sun shining brightly closing out a sweet earthy smell from the ground the intermixing with the salty breeze coming from the bay. The ocean sparkling as it reflects the sun, it’s turquoise water inviting one to play. As for the children they sat on the porch questing what do. It's here that the tale begins with my three sisters and me when we found ourselves bored on such a summer day. “ I'm soooo, BORED!” Niamh exclaims in a exasperated tone. Aine saves the day, when she pipes in to the conversation,“ Let's go to Mike's beach, the beachcombing got to be good, last night there was a storm” “ If we're lucky, maybe Uncle Mike’s buoys escaped and we can claim a finder's fee”, Aine states in a calm voice. Eventually we start for the beach, after paying the customary fee of one back massage to our Dad, we were free to leave the fenced yard. Aine and Oona lead the group while Niamh and I follow at a slower pace. Our families live close to each other, our house, the grandparents and
The story of Summer, by David Updike, is set during that idyllic time in life when responsibility is the last word on anyone's mind. And yet, as with all human affairs, responsibility is an ever-present and ever-necessary aspect to life. What happens when the protagonist, Homer, loses his awareness of a certain personal responsibility to maintain self-control? Homer's actions increasingly make him act foolishly, internally and externally. Also, how does Homer return to a sense of sanity and responsibility? To a degree, I would say that he does.
“All Summer Day” by Ray Bradbury is a short story about Margot, a little girl that is depressed and bullied by classmates. Margot recently came to Venus from Earth, she misses seeing the sun because Venus rains all day and night and the sun only comes out every 7 years. This makes her depressed, but to make it worse the other kids bully her because they are jealous that she saw the sun more recently than them. One lesson the story suggests is that depression can cause you to not enjoy life and be lonely.
The short story All Summer In a Day by Ray Bradbury illustrates that someone who acts upon their jealousy can end up with a feeling of great regret. The other kids were jealous of Margot for almost everything she had and they hated her for it. She was different from the other kids in a way that she had something the other kids didn’t. She remembered the sun. The other kids resolved their jealousy by doing some terrible things. Jealousy can cause people to do things they wouldn’t if they were thinking correctly. Jealousy can cause much regret.
The short sci-fi story All Summer in A Day by Ray Bradbury is about being treated as an outcast and reveals the alienating effects that it may have. Sometimes this treatment is brought on by others. In this case, Margot is treated in this harsh manner because she isn’t the same as her classmates and they desire to have the life experiences that she has. Being outcast may not be the only main theme for this story in each reader’s mind. All Summer in A Day provides a multitude of possible themes. This may be the case, however, the children’s physical and emotional abuse of Margot is extreme and justifies this theme. As the time draws nearer for the sun to rise, Margot’s classmates become more brash and crue and at that moment, Margot is exponentially different from the other children in hr class. This concept of being outcast and
We have observed two different short stories, one called “Examination Day” by Henry Slesar, and another called “All Summer in a Day” by Ray Bradbury. “Examination Day” is about how when a person becomes 12 years old they have to take an examination determining their intelligence. Anyone with an intelligence above the norm is considered unacceptable. Anyone smarter than the norm is eliminated. The story focuses on a very intelligent boy taking his Examination, and getting killed for being too smart. The story “All Summer in a Day” is about a colony on Venus that faces constant rain and the sun shining once every 7 years. The story focuses on a girl Margot, from earth who is harassed by the others on Venus since she remembers the sun being
In the short story “All Summer in a Day”, the author Ray Bradbury uses sensory imagery such as sight and sound to describe the setting of his version of planet Venus and to describe the children. He then uses the absence of sensory imagery when describing Margot to create contrast which helps us understand the idea that people who are different are ostracised and hated.
Try conceptualizing a world with perpetual rain. This is the world that Bradbury creates in his short story, “All Summer In a Day. A group of scientists and their children live on Venus, a planet that only sees the sun for an hour every seven years. The kids that immigrated here are only 9 years old. They do not remember the sun, as they have only seen the sun once, 7 years ago. But, there is a girl named Margot. Unlike the other kids, she was born on earth and moved to Venus 5 years ago. She has distinct memories of the sun. This causes her to stand out from the other kids. The loss of the sun causes her to grieve. The children living on Venus treat Margot mercilessly in jealousy due to her prior knowledge and experiences. This causes Margot to be a victim of depression, harassment, and denial.
I grabbed the broom lying against the wall. I started to sweep under the table and into the dustpan. “ Ok I think we’re done.”, “Ok”. I saw that there wasn’t much left to do, so I just started grabbing the plates and cups that were clean. “You’re my bubby” I said grabbing Evelyn by the arm so she would follow me. “I can’t wait until we get to go tubing!”, “Me too”. We took the clean dishes to the ledge and walked back to our table. “Who is tubing?” Cecilia one of our camp counselors asked “ We are” I said speaking for evelyn. “So am I” Georgia and Pier added. “Okay, let’s get you girls changed” We walked out of the dining hall and went back to our cabin. We were out in just a couple minutes, and ready to go tubing. As we walked to the waterfront stairs, we passed the red chairs and hammocks. Our excitement grew. We walked down all 70 steps to get down to the waterfront. As we reached the sand I took off my water shoes and felt the soft sand touch my feet. “Ok Emma is going to wait here with you while I check how long you have to wait until it’s your turn to tube. Emma is the cabin 9
Kids can be cruel when they are envious as shown in the short story, “All Summer In A Day,” by Ray Bradbury. The sun is what makes Margot happy, and when that gets taken away from her. In this short story there is several acts of cruelty to Margot by her classmates. These kids live in the planet of Venus, and they haven’t seen the sun in seven years, except for Margot. The kids are only nine years old so they haven’t seen the sun since they were two years old, but Margot moved there from Earth when she was four and she remembers the sun and that makes the other kids envious. In the beginning of the story it is the day that the sun is supposed to come out for the first time in seven years! The kids were skeptical except for Margot because she wanted to see it so bad. The kids were starting to prepare for the sun to come out but they were sitting inside waiting. While they were waiting the kids decided to lock Margot in a closet and not let her out. When the sun came out all the kids ran outside to play in the sun that felt so warm and nice on their skin, except for Margot, who was sitting inside in the dark closet. When the kids came back inside they felt sorry for leaving Margot in there. Envy can lead people to commit awful acts and cause shame as demonstrated throughout the character's actions in, “All Summer In A Day.”
“It has been raining for seven years; thousands upon thousands of days compounded and filled from one end to the other with rain, with the drum and gush of water, with the sweet crystal fall of showers and the concussion of storms so heavy they were tidal waves come over the islands.” (Bradbury, 1954) In the dystopian story, “All Summer In A Day” by Ray Bradbury, it takes place on the planet, Venus. A group of children, along with scientists get to live there, while being educated at the underground school. Margot, who is only 9 years old, wasn't born on Venus like the other children, but instead on Earth. She’s the only one who remembers how the sun felt through her skin and how beautiful it shined. On the contrary, the other children are jealous of her because she has some memory of the sun, while they don’t. Jealousy caused the children to harass, isolate, and make her depressed.
With summer almost over, I can't help but look back on the past few months. Mid-May I was completely blindfolded, I dived into the summer months without any goals or any idea of what it would bring.
It was a gorgeous summer day. the sun was shining, the birds were singing, and the world was at peace on the seemingly carefree sunday afternoon. church had just ended and the children ran fast and free ready to play. They ran two and twelve towards the town’s lake to go swimming, in order to ward off the heat of the noon sun. They stampeded through town bumping over numerous people and even one another to reach the cool blue waves. The menacing multitude took a sharp turn from the street to an old dusty road. The trees shook in the evening breeze and swayed slightly further when the children hurried by. Dust faintly clouded out the light that poured over the path. Finally they reached the dock and began to take off and swap clothes. The boys took off their shirts and pants and swam in their underwear, while the girls chose to go behind some nearby bushes.and exchange out their attire. When everyone was in they started to splash one another while laughing and shouting. A few of them dived under the water to search for fish and other sea life. When they came back, up two of them had seaweed, one held a starfish, and two others had a crab holding it by both sides. It was getting a little later in the day, but the kids were not quite yet ready to leave their fun to rest. They decided to play hide and seek even though the sun was beginning to make its descent behind the green curtains that were the distant hills. One child counted while everyone hid and waited. As he counted out
500 days of summer is a story where a boy meets a girl, he falls in love with her yet she does not truly love him. The movie shows the progression of the relationship of Tom and Summer. It begins when they first meet when Summer begins working as a secretary where Tom works and progresses to them casually dating. Summer is obviously hesitant and against relationships yet Tom is overly eager to find the perfect girl. The story ultimately shows the demise and after effects of their relationship. At first thought anyone could think this is the typical love story where the movie casually progresses to them living happily ever after. This is not that kind of fairy tale love story.
I remember it like it was yesterday, maybe because it was yesterday. No, I’m just kidding. It was more like this summer. Not this coming summer but the last summer. And not the summer of the year 2016, but the one from this year, 2017.
The sun’s rays glisten across the water as my family and I lie on the golden sands of the beach to relax. Seagulls and other families are scattered around us along the length of the beach. My mom, my sister, and I lie next to each other, listening to the waves crashing against the ocean bank.
