My short-term career goals are to complete my Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, become a Licensed Professional Counselor, and provide trauma counseling in either a private practice or community-based setting. As a graduate student, my primary goal is to learn a wide range of techniques so that I can develop a therapeutic style that is effective, meaningful, and empirically supported. Counseling approaches such as Person-Centered Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Gestalt Therapy were all compelling to me when I completed Theories of Counseling as part of my Psychology degree. Elective courses offered through the CMHC program such as Theory and Practice of Reality Therapy and Body/Mind seem fascinating and I would love to learn to incorporate these concepts into my future practice. Additionally, counseling techniques such as Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy are areas I plan to learn more about as I progress through my education. Additionally, I am curious about learning to work with a therapy dog to help my future clients feel more comfortable …show more content…
One thing I hope to do in the future is become more involved in advocacy relating to sexual assault and human trafficking. Although these are areas I have only just begun to explore, I consider it important to increase public awareness about sexual assault issues. Some specific things I would be interested in doing relate to teaching young adults about consent issues, teaching the public about how to support those who have experienced a sexual assault, and helping people escape and recover from human trafficking. Additionally, I may someday pursue my doctoral degree so that I can expand my knowledge about trauma recovery. As part of my doctoral degree, I would also be interested in undertaking research about effective treatment methodologies for trauma related mental health
My primary career goal is to become a physician practicing evidence-based medicine in making treatment decisions with patients. This, combined with my longstanding passion for genetics, prompted my MS application with hopes of developing an understanding for genetics, which I believe will maintain relevance and importance in the medical field throughout my lifetime. Within an understanding of research contributing to evidence-based medicine, in contrast to current practice-based research, I would especially like to investigate the role of epigenetics in diseased states.
My long-term goal with my college education is to complete my Bachelor's degree and eventually continue on to receive my Master’s degree in criminal justice. My mother battled mental illness during her life. Unfortunately she lost her battle in September 2013. Since her surprising death I have soul-searched and researched ways to help others like my mother. That introspection has brought me to your program, Master of Science in Mental Health Counseling.
I know that the sky is the limit when it comes to nursing fields but I have a sincere interest in mental health. I thoroughly enjoyed my clinical day at the Pavilion although I did recognize that the Nurses spend a lot of time charting which depleted my interest a bit. However, I do know that you can work in other settings I can work in especially if I continue my education to a master’s or doctoral level. Becoming a Psychiatric Mental Health Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (PMH-APRN) would allow me to prescribe certain medications (depending on the state’s law I live in) and administering psychotherapy. (American Psychiatric Nurses Association, 2015) However, these are potential long-term goals! Let’s talk about short-term.
I’m applying to this program because I want to pursue a career in college student development in a program that gives its students a wide variety of hands on experiences. I’m looking for a program that combines traditional classroom teaching with the opportunity for multiple internships and practicums. Additionally, I have grown to find a home at Appalachian State and I would like to continue my education at this university.
My short-term career goals are to complete nursing school, pass the National Council Licensure Examination-Registered Nurse (NCLEX), and become a registered nurse. I start at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Nursing this fall; I am expected to graduate in the spring of 2018. I am interested in becoming a pediatric nurse at first. My long-term career goals would be to specialize in either pediatrics or neonatal nursing.
More generally, I enjoy the process of defining research questions, designing a study, and analyzing results to learn more about important areas. For instance, while completing my undergraduate degree, I became interested in issues such as social perceptions of sexual assault and how sexual assault affects romantic relationships for survivors. I believe that studying these areas as part of my graduate education would help me become a more effective clinician because I would gain a broader understanding of the complex social and interpersonal factors that trauma survivors must
What are your specific career goals for the future? How does this scholarship fit into your plans to achieve these goals?
A long-term personal goal that I have always had for myself is to graduate high school with my academic honors and technical honors diplomas, to get it I had to work my butt off. I had always studied for every test, made sure to at least receive a B or higher on any assignment. The hard work has paid off now because that is the path that I am on now to receiving a diploma. I had a lot of barriers though, like probation and family losses, but I made sure just to focus on me and know that life always goes on and I should
My current career goals include working in the field of microbiology. Although, I am at a crossroads regarding my path of study: becoming a pathologist (medical doctor) or gaining a Masters as a microbiologist. I am highly interested in conducting research for the CDC or other firms in studying viruses and other pathogens and developing vaccines or cures. My interest for pathogens started as a child when I would watch countless zombie films. I later discovered I was more interested in the disease and the idea of a pandemic than the actual zombie thriller. In high school I enrolled in science classes and researched more about pathogens and occupations involving microorganisms and determined that I would pursue a career in microbiology. My interest

Resources and support are available to me and that I will use to help obtain my career goals are professional connections/resources and institutional connections/resources. My professional connections include and atmospheric chemistry professor at Emory University and a mentor who recently left Emory University to go work at the census bureau in Washington D.C. Through the professor at Emory I have access to a lot of the universities resources such as access to scientific journals, I can attend seminars, I can ask for opportunities for research, I can also ask for opportunities for networking through her colleagues, I have a friendly professional who I can ask questions, and I have a professional reference with whom I have done work with.
