Should college athletes get paid; this an argument that has been sparking debate for tens of years now, but only in recent years has it become one of the most debated topics in the Western world of sport. NCAA Division 1 sports attract crowds in their thousands, and NCAA athletic sports generated $8.7 billion in total revenue in the 2009–2010 academic year (1) it is also to be noted that this revenue is just what the NCAA made, and not each individual college, meaning that even more revenue is generated than the figures above. The amount of money that is generated from college athletics is a primary example in the argument of why student athletes should get paid, as there is simply so much money accumulated from their hard work on the field and public exposure from press it seems unfair to not pay them. These questions would mean more debate, and it has been said that strikes may occur from players and certain teams because of wage distribution issues, also teams would start to consist of the players that will accept less pay than others, which would lead to unfair team decisions - stating another reason why college athletes should not be paid. The final argument against college athletes being paid is that college student athletes should simply play because they love the sport. If some players are only willing to play in return for money, it is a certain that other players would replace them and play just because they love the sport, and want to represent their school at a college level, this also could lead to the belief behind the theory that if student athletes where to be paid, there would be no motive to study or to graduate, as the athlete would already be earning a decent
