Should gay couples be allowed to marry seems to be the question on a lot of people’s minds these days and the answer to this question is currently being addressed throughout our country. Both gay and straight people share identical desires and outcomes when it comes to love and partnerships. Everyone aspires to obtain the same goals with someone they care about, those being happiness, successfulness and living to a ripe old age. Still, some heterosexual people visualize gay people (particularly men) as only being interested in sex and are incapable of commitment. I happen to know several male couples have been together in excess of 40 years or more. These couples own homes together, work, pay taxes and contribute to the good of the country . Should gay couples be allowed to marry? I say yes. Christians, government officials and heterosexuals (perhaps closeted in some cases) tend to lean on two particular phrases when arguing against gay marriage. Those being marriage should be between a man and a woman or my personal favorite, gays are ruining the sanctity of marriage. Personally, however, I fail to see the sanctity of marriage in this country as anything solid. I grew up in a home of divorced parents. The current divorce rate in this country is 40 to 50 percent with subsequent rates being even higher . Would allowing gay couples to marry ruin the sacredness of the bond? Half of the once married couples in America would have to honestly answer no. I
A gay couple from Indianapolis who have waited to marry for years have been quoted as saying: “We 're positive because the mindset in this nation seems to be that it is unconstitutional to say that our marriages are different from any other marriage.” (pro-con,1) This means that gay people are staying optimistic. Prohibiting gay marriage is considered discrimination to gays because the government is not giving homosexual couples the same rights as gay heterosexuals, which is also unconstitutional. Therefore, same-sex couples should have access to the same marriage benefits and public acknowledgment enjoyed by heterosexual couples. (pro-con,1)
Gay marriage has been a controversial topic that is highly debated all around the globe, containing many of its own varying viewpoints and beliefs on both sides of the argument. Those who oppose same-sex marriage believe that it is a sacred bond that can only be kept sacred between a man and a woman, and that same-sex marriage will ruin the sanctity of marriage. Also, if gay marriage is allowed they believe that it will open the door to other non-traditional relationships to be accepted such as polygamy. Finally other key oppositions come from religious beliefs and standards. However the many that support gay marriage usually argue that everyone should have equal right to be in relationships with each other and receive the financial, emotional, and social benefits of marriage. I mean who really would be affected if same-sex marriage were to become legal? Nobody. If everyone feels that there is that special someone whom they are perfect for and will fall in love with, gay people would feel the same way. They deserve equal opportunity to not only find that perfect somebody but to be able to love them and get married. Leading to parenthood, and while gay couples are not able to have children on their own, that doesn’t mean they can’t adopt children off the street. However, several times have happened where a gay couple were put at the end of a waiting list or even denied completely just because of their sexual orientation. Other benefits to marriage are also tax breaks and
Gays and lesbians exist all over the world just like everybody. There are different opinions on gay marriage based upon religion , culture or different beliefs. A problem that we have encountered for a long period of time is that gays and lesbians are discrimated against. Just like heterosexuals, homosexuals need marriage rights too. Gay marriage should be legalized because it is a civil right, the denial of gay marriage promotes discrimation and inequality, and a marriage is more beneficial than a civil union.
Should gay marriages be legal? Clearly we as a nation are undecided on this issue. 36 states have passed legislation banning gay marriages, yet the state of Vermont passed a law that allows homosexual couples the right to participate in civil unions. Some other states are also debating whether or not to allow these couples to marry. Unfortunately, the dispute has left the United States homosexual community in an awkward position. There are some people who think that gay people have no rights and should never be allowed to marry. Other people believe that gay people are just like
Recently, controversies have been witnessed concerning the issues of gender and sexuality. For example, the US government has issued directives regarding the legality of same-sex relationships. Several states in America have legalized homosexuality while the others have remained adamant to accept such sexual orientations. Same-sex and transgender couples have been facing prejudice, discrimination, and hatred from the general public that supports heterosexual relationships. However, the legitimacy of any form of sexuality should be determined following an empirical research and analysis rather than drawing conclusions from unsubstantiated arguments. The most common
There has been a huge debate in the United States of America of whether or not homosexuals should be able to get married. Well, most people right now are leaning towards them getting married, but they should be able to, except call it something else, because being “married” is being man and wife, not man and man/ wife and wife.
Jennifer Pizer states, “We absolutely agree that marriage is a special word for a special institution. We disagree that the social institution should be available only in a discriminatory manner and that it serves any social purpose to exclude gay and lesbian couples” (qtd. in Jost “Gay Marriage Showdown” 2). Marriage is between two people who make a promise to love one another unconditionally. Currently, many heterosexual marriages are being rushed into due to difficult circumstances, such as teen pregnancy or the need to marry their significant other at a young age. As Andrew Koppelman states in his argument, “The appropriate response to unplanned pregnancy is the shotgun marriage. Same-sex marriage, by ignoring gender and separating sex from reproduction, seems to flout this complex of values” (qtd. in Jost “Gay Marriage” 1). Unlike some heterosexual couples, homosexual relationships are based on nothing but love for their significant other. For people to say that marriage is strictly between a man and a woman, they are not fully aware of what a good marriage is built off of. A man can love a man, and a woman could love a woman. With a man and woman getting married, it affects no one’s life except their own. What is so different about a homosexual couple? Why must they suffer from not being able to marry who they want because they fell in love with someone of the same gender? If a homosexual couple gets married it is only affects them. Supporting gay marriage and gay rights does not mean one will become gay, they just understand that gay people are human as well, and they deserve just as much as any heterosexual person does, including marrying who they want to marry. As Rose Posa Guina states, “Limiting marriage to heterosexual couples encourages homophobia, discrimination and exclusion” (qtd. in Karaim 1). Posa
Should same sex marriage be legalized in the United States? In some of our states laws have already been passed to allow same sex couples the freedom to get married, while other states are still resisting for one reason or another. As with everything else there is more than one side, more than one argument supporting and more than one argument resisting the changes being proposed. There are religious reasons, moral reasons, constitutional reasons and financial reasons being used by both sides and the debate seems to get nowhere. For every argument for the issue there is always an argument against it. I have my own opinion about the issue, however I will look at the arguments themselves on each side to identify which side has
Lastly, each one of these issues of controversy has its good and bad points. To get a better view on both sides of the issue I interviewed two homosexual males who have differing opinions on the issue. On the issue of gay marriage, Brian had this to say: “Since gay people tend not to stay together as long, I see no reason for them to be married in the first place” (Brian). The second interviewee, Brandon, responded with: “I believe gays should have the right to marry, because if a man and a woman love one another just as a man and a man love one another, you should not
Marriage is a very sacred arrangement. It is a lifetime commitment said to be only between man and woman. These two people should love or be in love with each other. Over the years homosexuality has come to the forefront. The question of should homosexuals be allowed to marry each other has had the world in an uproar. Homosexuals, indeed should be able to marry each other with the same benefits as man and woman.
Differences are dreaded by society today just because of a misunderstanding created through incorrect information given. The only change that has been made from the past until now is that there are more of the community that are seen, not embarrassed, not afraid, and no longer willing to hide what makes us happy. Gays, Lesbians, and Transgender have been hiding amongst the ages from the Roman era until current 2012 and even though many look at the community as infection, it is truth that makes us afraid of what we do not understand compared to what is seen. Just like slavery and women’s right, Gay, Lesbian, Quire, and Bisexuals community have been faced with adversity. Gay rights are an ethical issue because there is limitation set for our community due to sexuality. Sexual discrimination is considering a candidate or worker unfavorably because of a person’s sex, or affiliation with a group or groups related with a specific sex. The law forbids discrimination based on sex when it comes to any aspect of employment, including hiring, firing, pay, job assignments, promotions, layoff, training, fringe benefits and any other term or condition of employment. Gender identity discrimination, on the other hand, is more specific to people who don’t conform to stereotypes of gender identity and/or gender expression. Recently, however, some courts have concluded that transgender persons are protected from discrimination under Title VII and other sex discrimination statutes. Neither
Same Sex marriage has really come out of the darkness and into society’s spotlight. It has increasingly become one of the most controversial issues in the United State of America and around the world. The public opinion varies by race, gender, class, culture, religion and in the political arena. Perhaps there have been positive shifts in attitudes towards gay marriages. This paper I will go through the impact of marital, family statue, and civil rights on the views of same sex marriages, legal unions of gay and lesbian couples raising children but mostly about whether if kids should be raised by the same-sex marriage.
Gay marriage tends to spark many different opinions in the hearts and minds of the citizens of this great nation. This political issue is usually one that would spark a heated debate between even the closest of friends. The subject description typically spurs intense hatred and anger, even. You would more than likely witness numerous signs picketing this issue whether it may be a revised Bible quote deeming it a sin or a sign decked out in the many colors of the rainbow which is the universal flag for gays. I propose that gay marriage should be legalized because nontraditional couples should have just as many rights and privileges as traditional couples and the legalization of it is not
For as long as human history can tell us, there have always been groups of people that are oppressed by other groups of people. Ancient Romans persecuted the Christians, nazis persecuted the Jewish people, and America did the same with blacks. Since then, America has removed its institutions that oppressed these people. However, until very recently it still had other institutions in place that discriminated against a group of people. One of these institutions was marriage. Until the United States Supreme Court ruled last year in the case Obergefell v. Hodges that same-sex marriage was a protected right under the constitution, there were still several states who did not allow gays to get married. A careful analysis of the arguments used to support gay marriage bans shows that there still exists a lingering desire to have a world where homosexuality is not regarded as a norm because it undermines our social hierarchies. The source of this devaluation, as opponents of gay marriage claim, is the children.
Same sex marriage, marriage amongst two people from the same biological sex or gender identity. Same sex marriages can be performed in a secular civil ceremony or in a religious setting are endorsed and practiced by various religious groups around the world.
