When it comes time for high school students to enroll in classes, many of them decide against taking an Advanced Placement class as a result of false assumptions. Why do false assumptions about AP courses exist when the concept was to help students further their education? While it is true that many students take advantage of these courses, the idea of taking an AP course originated as a beneficial route for students. Arguments that were previously stated in articles can easily be rebutted by analyzing the benefits of taking an Advanced Placement course. High school students may benefit by taking AP courses by developing college-level skills, saving money and time, and impressing college admission officers.

Students in AP courses typically are required to write more essays and solve through provoking problems that normal students typically do not do (Grove). These various skills that are developed, such as the critical thinking and high-level calculating, help to pave the road for success with students (Davis). Gaining these essential skills while in high school helps to shape healthy habits in students and prepare them for their future in college. For example, AP courses contain different levels of rigor and commitment than a normal course offers a student, which offers students a glance at college work and expectations (Grove). Therefore, the student will be better prepared for the workload and level of intensity that exists in a college atmosphere. Someone once said, “Strength doesn’t come from what you can do. It comes from overcoming the things you once thought you couldn’t.” I use to think that I couldn’t take AP because it was too difficult. But I’m willing to prove to myself and others that just because something is considered hard, doesn’t automatically mean it’s not for you or that you’re going to fail. I want to take AP Biology because I want to challenge myself, of the benefits, and for the experience. I believe that hard work comes with great rewards that are life changing.
Throughout high school, I have challenged myself both in the classroom and out in my community. By taking the honors classes, while participating in as many extracurricular activities as I can, I have learned the importance of balance and commitment. My school offered many dual-enrollment courses with conjunction to the local community college as well as Seton Hall University. These classes prepared me for the rigorous workload of college classes, while giving me the opportunity to earn college credits as a high school student. In addition to the dual-enrollment program, I have taken several AP classes that too transfer to college credits. Preparing high school students for college is every parent and teachers goal but sometimes that goal is hard to achieve. Students are not getting a proper education now-a-days and they do not realize that it is going to hurt them after they graduate. A study says, “That composite score dropped to 20.9 among high school students in 2013, the lowest in eight years” (Adams, 2013). That is a very low average and it is because what students are learning in high school just isn’t sticking with them through college. After students graduate they start taking harder classes, some have to start paying their own bills, and so many other changes they are not ready for. It is a big jump to go from high school to college and I think schools can do a better job of preparing students. It is their experience and education in high school that is going to help them in college. If they are not ready they are going to struggle which will result in some not so good outcomes such as having low grades or even worse dropping out. I do not believe that high school education has prepared students for college because there are many useless classes, it is more about memorizing than learning, and students drop out in a year or less because of the workload.
Many friends have taken or are going to take this class, which motivates my inner want in exploring this advanced class. Before my junior year began, I took time and vacillated between taking AP literature or AP biology--I decided on the latter. In perspective of students from underrepresented populations, the numbers are much lower in comparison the number of students participating in the AP course program. However, among concurrent and post-secondary enrollment options the number of low-income students rose 40% from the previous school year, while white student participation percentages remains stagnant ("Postsecondary enrollment options," 2012). This is a state funded program, with affiliated state colleges and universities from which the college credit is earned, which is very beneficial for those who do not have the financial support to attend college. Other benefits to these programs are they allow students to complete a “trial run” of college classes to determine if this is part of their career path without exhausting personal finances. These courses also give students exposure to the high academic expectations associated with college-level work, allow them to find new challenges, and give them momentum to pursue a college degree by awarding them college credits before they graduate high school.
Throughout many of the arduous AP courses I took in high school I was pushed to my limits, but I accomplished my goals through hard work. One example of this would be my AP United States History class. This class was one of the most difficult courses I had taken, mostly due to the sheer amount of information being presented and needed to be memorized. Many schools in the country offer students the chance to take Advanced Placement courses. Every student has heard time and time again that taking these courses are necessary to prepare for life after high school. Unfortunately, that claim is not the truth and is being proven to be false each day. AP courses should not be offered at New West because they do not offer the opportunity to go into deep discussion on topics being taught, selective schools such as Dartmouth and Brown are not giving them as much importance, and because the courses affect the quality of the school for the worse.
Why do I want to take an AP class? The reason I decided I want to take AP English is because I wish to expand my knowledge of reading and writing. Furthermore, English has always been my favorite class and I've always been interested in a career connected to the subject. Even more, I have always done extremely well in my other English classes and I feel that I could be very successful taking an AP class. Most of the time, students glorify the fact that they are taking these advanced courses, while they are probably crying trying to manage the workload received.
