Should Same Sex Marriage Be Allowed?

The United States of America was founded as a secular sanctuary for ideals like freedom, equality, and tolerance – few will argue against that. Over its history American culture has radically evolved as it strived to meet the ideals its nation was based upon, making changes like ending slavery and providing legal equality for women and minorities, changes that at the time seemed absurd but today are unquestionable merits that define what an “American” is. The quest to reach the ultimate utopian society continues today as true Americans fight the evils of ignorance, stubborn bigotry and the fear to change that still manifest themselves in a large portion of U.S. citizens, preventing this nation from moving forward. One of the outstanding minorities still left to be granted the ideals of freedom, equality, and tolerance are homosexuals trying to obtain the right to marry the person they want to spend the rest of their life with, regardless of gender. Same-sex marriages should be recognized in the eyes of the U.S. government in accordance with its responsibility to provide all American citizens equal freedoms.

The United States is currently embroiled in a battle over issues regarding civil rights of its citizens and what rights are constituted by that term. In the past, civil rights issues have been fought over women's rights and those of African Americans among others all in the name of seeking equality. Perhaps the most vocal group discussing civil rights in the United States at present are gay marriage activists who are fighting for same-sex couples to be able to marry. These individuals feel that marriage is a civil right and that there is no legal reason why people of the same gender cannot be legally married in the United States, a perspective which is shared by many people who are themselves not homosexual. Homosexuality and what rights should be afforded to same-sex couples have been in the forefront of politics for the last few years and rightly so. Before this period, gay people had to fight to get recognized and for their relationships to even be legal. For most of American history, homosexuals have had to hide their sexual orientation or fear ostracism and marginalization by the moral and social majority. This oppression is still seen in the legislation of the United States. Those who do not agree almost always use their religious beliefs as a reason for denying homosexuals this right despite the fact that the United States Constitution bans legislation being based upon religious perspectives. Today’s society has many strong opinions on who people should marry, especially when the couple is same sex. Marriage is a commitment between two people, and overtime homosexuals have been denied their necessary rights as a human. Luckily, Americans live in a land where they can marry whomever they choose, but in many states homosexuals are left out of the deal because they choose to marry the same sex. Gay and lesbian couples a bid by laws and should be treated with the same fairness and equality as any other human being.

There has been a huge debate in the United States of America of whether or not homosexuals should be able to get married. Well, most people right now are leaning towards them getting married, but they should be able to, except call it something else, because being “married” is being man and wife, not man and man/ wife and wife.

Same Sex marriage has really come out of the darkness and into society’s spotlight. It has increasingly become one of the most controversial issues in the United State of America and around the world. The public opinion varies by race, gender, class, culture, religion and in the political arena. Perhaps there have been positive shifts in attitudes towards gay marriages. This paper I will go through the impact of marital, family statue, and civil rights on the views of same sex marriages, legal unions of gay and lesbian couples raising children but mostly about whether if kids should be raised by the same-sex marriage.

There are many debates going on about whether gay-marriage should be recognized by all United States. Why is it that some states ban gay-marriage but others allow it? Why is it that some states declare that a ban on gay-marriage is unconstitutional yet others say it is not? Why is it that some states recognize gay-marriages from other states but others do not? These are some questions that should be very closely looked at if we are going to ever understand the debates that go on about gay-marriage.

The United Stated of America consists of many different types of people, all who take pride in their freedom. Recently, we had seen the reality of our “freedom,” which some may not really have considered America the land of the free, homosexuals especially. Just like the “normal” citizen in America, homosexuals like the idea of the American dream as well. And most Americans believe in, or enjoy the idea of marriage. People get married all across the country; people of all races, religion, ethnicity, and as of June 26th, 2015, people of the same sex may also enjoy that privilege to be happy as well. Anyone who believes in love shall be able to marry as they please, regardless of their preferences.

“…I now pronounce you husband and wife…” One would normally hear this when attending a wedding. In tradition marriage has been between one male and one female who love each other. But how would one feel if they heard “I now pronounce you groom and groom” or how about “…bride and bride...”? In the last 50 years the number of same-sex couples has increased. The on-going argument between the government and the people is “Should gay marriage be legal?” Although some say same-sex marriage should be legal, others say the same-sex marriage should be illegal. Gay marriage should be illegal because a child adopted by the couple will miss out on a mother or father and population will decrease. The beginning of legalizing same-sex couples started in Massachusetts. From there out the battle of legalizing same-sex marriage began.

Gay marriage has and still is a huge controversy in the United States. I will say though that the U.S. has come along way when it comes to same-sex marriage. As of November 20, 2014 gay marriage is now legal in thirty-five of the fifty U.S. states. Massachusetts was the first state to legalize same-sex marriage in May of two thousand and four. As of October ninth two-thousand and fourteen, only sixteen out of one hundred and ninety-four countries allow same sex marriage. By those odds I would say that the U.S. is actually doing pretty well at accepting gay marriage. My question is then why can 't Congress change the Federal Marriage Amendment now with out causing a million problems. So I decided to dig further into the history of gay marriage before looking at the proponents and opponents of legalizing gay marriage.

Of course gay marriage affects society is several ways. Society has always looked upon gay marriage as between a man and a woman, by legalizing same-sex marriage the traditional idea of marriage is revised. If same-sex marriage is legal, should it be taught about in schools? Matt Stick asks interesting questions in his article “How could gay marriage harm anyone?” He brings up the question of “If a parent objects to a school teaching pro-homosexuality and pulls his child out of school and because of it is ridiculed and/or jailed, is he harmed?” Many people who are on the conservative side don’t want their children being exposed to learning about homosexuality. Through the years homosexual people have made great improvements in society. Laws are changing and homosexuals are getting recognition for their choices. With the new laws and improvements come criticism. No matter what the topic is there is always going to be two sides, positive and negative. The creation of the LGBTQ community has brought awareness for those who are a part of the community and helped society be more comfortable with the changes brought on by the community. With marriage between same sex couples becoming legal in more and more states, couples are trying to adopt or using other alternatives to having children of their own. Though that does not mean that same sex couples did not have children before they were legally allowed to be married. There is criticism about whether or not same sex couples should be parents and both sides have quite the following and are ambivalent in their opinions.

Why should gay marriage be legalized? Gay marriage is wrong & disrespectful to god. The institution of marriage is a tradition between a man and a woman, not two men or two women. Marriage is already threatened with high divorce rates (between 40% and 50%) and with 40.6% of babies being born to unmarried mothers. Allowing gay marriage would weaken the institution. Gay marriage could also mess up a lot of cultures, like those that believe in polygamy, which means a marriage that includes more than one partner. The concept of marriage is in danger of being misunderstood due to same-sex couples wanting to be married and acquire the same benefits as heterosexual marriages. The fundamental purpose of marriage is uniting a man and a woman in a worthy cause to preserve human civilization. If everyone was homosexual, then how could our species be repeatedly produced? This problem could end human existence. Besides, even those who are not homosexual have restrictions on marriage so they can not assume they are being discriminated upon. Restrictions are created to keep the balance and concept of the idea from being muddled. Their sexual orientation has nothing to do with why these rules were put into place. As a result, homosexual individuals have the right to marry along with everyone else as long as the restrictions are not crossed. Same sex marriage is currently only being allowed in some states but is still looked down upon and banned in other states. Legalization in all states still causes quite a bit of controversy and debate. Would be easier to just legalize it in all states and make everything equal? Or would people’s opinions and religious views continue to stand in the way?

Many people don’t know the story behind the battle of same-sex marriage. They hear about it on the news but fail to see the big picture behind it. Legally, why all of the sudden is same-sex marriage such a big deal? Most people don’t know why people are fighting for this equality. Who brought the debate from the bottom (in their state) all the way to the Supreme Court to get justice for all same-sex couples? What is the Supreme Court’s final and current ruling in all same-sex marriage cases? Same-sex marriage is currently legally evolving into something bigger than just a marriage.
