Should Students Be Allowed to Chew Gum in School?
An increasing number of students today are showing more signs of anxiety, stress, and ADHD. A solution to the issue is allowing children to chew gum while in the classroom. Evidence shows that the process of chewing gum increases the blood flow to the brain and heart as well as increases saliva in the mouth, which gives the individual certain advantages. Students should be allowed to chew gum while in the classroom because they demonstrate increased memory and alertness, higher test scores and concentration, as well as decreased stress and anxiety (Pooley, Smith). Most people believe that the process of chewing gum can be distracting not only to the chewer, but to the surrounding persons.

The process of chewing gum activates the Eustachian tube in their ears, which dulls background noises and allows individuals to focus more easily and react quickly in difficult situations. Middle school students from Houston, Texas were studied by researchers from Baylor College of Medicine. The students were divided into two groups: one chewed gum while doing homework and taking tests and one did not. The results revealed that the students who did chew gum had a three percent increase on their math tests while children who did not chew gum did not. The 2016-17 school year at Cooper Middle School brought forth many changes within the school, including the ability to chew gum. Principal Robert Gurney said that “decades of students have been asking for this opportunity” when he spoke to the 8th grade class on the first day. One reason why I believe gum should be allowed at school is because studies have proven that it increases grade point average. Baylor College of Medicine studied 108 eighth graders for 14 straight weeks. Half of them chewed gum during school work and homework while the other half didn’t. They noticed a three percent raise in the grades of those who chewed gum. If we were allowed to chew gum during school work and tests but then had to spit it out at the door when class was over, our grades would also have the chance to increase. For this reason I believe that chewing gum would be beneficial to students with memory problems that need a little extra boost to help them reach their full potential. This way teachers and students would both benefit for this new rule.
That means if students chew gum during a test ot before a test, it can help reduce stress. Gum would also help for people with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) because the chewing motion can also help them relax. Furthermore, gum should be allowed in class is because studies show that peppermint flavoured gum helps the brain to not make stupid and careless mistakes. That means it would be hard to make a stupid mistake in a test if we are chewing peppermint flavoured gum.
