Ancient Greek architecture dates from around 800 BCE when the site of Delphi first obtained a religious significance. The architecture of Ancient Greece has influenced the architecture of the past two millennia most significantly that of Ancient Rome (Hemingway, 2003). Greek architecture influenced Roman architecture in extensive ways, giving that the Romans adopted and incorporated many Greek methods and elements into their own practice. Although the Romans were inspired by the Greek there are still many differences in their architecture most noticeably through materiality. Although the Greeks constructed many types of buildings the most recognisable “Greek” structure is the temple. (Becker, 2015) As stated by Coleen Hemingway in an article for the Metropolitan Museum of Art “ the Greek temple best exemplifies the aims and methods of Greek Architecture”. Whilst exploring such architecture it is necessary to examine the mentality, religious beliefs and driving forces of each civilization. The main purpose of the Roman Perystile was of a garden or a beautiful arranged place, where people were able to have walks or spend time outside the house on their own property. The columns were built with two aims, the first one was for supporting the roof, and the second one to create a beautiful architectural space, filled with specific roman details. Contrarily, for the Mesopotamians, this place were designed only for technical and functional purposes that were supposed to bring sun light and fresh air into the house, or to keep the temperature cool.

In first century AD, the baths were a place of leisure time during many Romans daily routine.  People from almost every class, men and women ( but not children) could attend the public baths or thermaes3, which could be compared to modern day fitness clubs. The Romans architecture was heavily influenced by Greek Architecture, in the way of columns and stone (Cartwright). The Coliseum is the largest of their structures, and Coliseum-inspired structures can still be seen around the world through football stadiums, or soccer stadiums. The Romans Pantheon inspired the Capitol Building, as well. The Capitol Buildings similarities to the Pantheon are so close, that the ceilings even look the same. The history of their architecture runs virtually in step with the history of their empire to an extent. As the Empire expanded so did the architecture, and as Romans became more magnificent their architecture followed. Roman architecture began as a form of worship. The first Roman architects were the ancient priests and dwellers who made areas of sacrifice and worship for their gods. At first, their homes were simple huts but as they grew smarter and more aware of their surroundings, making the building more complex than ever. Roman architecture has influenced Westerns so much that if you were to take a walk down a street, chances are you would discover a beautiful Roman style building. The reason behind the popularity of this style is probably because of its ?classic?, unique, pretty yet simple design. Common characteristics of Roman designs are bold, defined mouldings, columns, arches and peaks. One or more of these are often used in Western buildings going for a classical look. In the eighteenth century wealthy young men started to travel to Italy on 'The Grand Tour' as part of their education. They discovered the buildings and statues of ancient Rome. When they got back home they paid craftsmen to build new houses based on Roman designs. Roman styles became the height of fashion and soon everyone wanted to join the trend. Roman architecture has obviously influenced the way Westerns build their buildings if it spread so rapidly and was and still is so popular!

The palace was built by the Roman Emperor Diocletian in the 4th century. Although it was referred to as a “palace”, because of its intended use as the emperor’s residence, the term might be misleading because the structure of the building is massive and resembles a large fortress. Half of the palace was for the Emperor Diocletian’s personal use, and the rest housed the military garrison. Therefore, it is considered to be one of the most imposing Roman ruins, and its also considered as the main attraction of the city of Spilt, Croatia. Moreover, today, around 3000 people live in the palace’s territory.

The Romans are famous for many things. One thing is their adaptation and development of architecture from other civilization. From the Etruscans and early tribes the Romans got most of their basic architectural skills. From the Greeks some components of Roman architecture were adapted from the Greeks. The heart of Roman architecture was the Roman forum, which was being constructed under the rule of Octavian Caesar. Eventually the Roman architecture went into a stage in which all the buildings looked like the Greek buildings.

The two ancient civilizations of ancient Greece and Rome were the best of the best during their time periods. Ancient Greece began around 2000 B.C. by the inhabitants known as the Mycenaean’s, followed by the Minoans. The Minoans built the foundation of Greece.
