Coed classes and schools have always been the norm for majority of students across the country, many may not even know or even consider that there is another option. Single-sex education. In simple terms this when classes/schools are separated by gender, all the girls are together and all the boys are together. Some say this is a better alternative than coed teaching, but I don’t agree with that. Not just because it’s my personal opinion but because there is proven evidence that there are no more benefits that come from single-sex education then that come from normal coed teaching. I will show you what I mean through the rest of this paper, so let’s get started.
Although single-sex education may seem to have many benefits for both genders, together and separately, there are relatively none that are proven. Well, if you feel that you're not ok with that well, In school year 2004-05 122 public schools offered single sex classes and 34 public schools were single sex classes mandatory according to “Old Tactic Gets New Use: Public Schools Separate Boys and Girls.” Article. Close to 70% of kids in single sex classes raised their math and reading scores in “Old Tactic Gets New Use: Public Schools Separate Boys and Girls.” Article. Although this may seem bad and shouldn't happen it's really not. Kids in single sex classes will have more of a chance to succeed than students in non single sex class because of most kids have no problem with this in their school, less discipline, and most of all higher grades.

The typical classroom consists an image of boys and girls coexisting, working together, and learning in the same way. As when you walk into certain schools you will see rooms with blue walls with race cars on it, while other rooms will have pink walls with flowers on it. These classrooms would be single-gender. Many students or parent is not given an option of single-sex classrooms without it being a private school and costing hundreds of dollars. Schools should be able to offer students more than one option without having a distraction of the opposite gender.

Single-sex education, also known as single-gender education, is the practice of conducting education where male and females students attend separate classes or in separate buildings or schools. It has been a topic of debate especially for parents who have to think about where to send their children to school. There are many reasons and evidence to suggest that single sex schools are more beneficial. They provide students to learn better, allow them to socialize without pressure from the other sex and the increased academic records of students in these types of schools.
Until the 20th century, education in the United States was gender-specific. Coeducation progressively came into the American educational landscape in the late 1800s, and since that time, same-sex education primarily has been confined to exclusive and denominational schools. Beginning in 2002, after the No Child Left Behind Act was passed, single-sex education has been growing in popularity. According to the National Association for Single Sex Public Education, the United States has over 95 single-sex public schools and more than 445 public coed schools offer single-sex classrooms (Novotney, Amy). With the popularity on the rise, many questions have been asked as to whether this divide in the classroom is academically ailing to a child’s learning or if it is not. By examining the successes of single-sex classrooms, school districts and parent’s can more fully understand that single-sex classes can implement changes to enhance students learning abilities.
Same-Sex education harms children more than it helps students because students lose their collaboration skills with the opposite sex that is desperately needed later in life. Although single sex education may help break down stereotypes, schools should stick to coed because few educators are properly trained in gender specific teaching, gender differences in learning aren’t the same all around, and kids need to learn to coexist and work with the other sex.
When deciding whether or not to experiment with single-sex classrooms, there are many issues that must be taken into consideration. Those who would be hurt most by this decision would be males. If boys are not able to learn alongside girls, their achievement level would decline and their character development would be hindered. Experimenting with this concept would arise multiple issues and put boys at disadvantages that would put them behind those who are able to learn in coeducational classrooms both educationally and behaviorally; these concerns must be taken into consideration before putting single-sex classrooms into place.
Juliet Williams, UCLA Department of Gender Studies professor, calls out LAUSD for nonresponsive action to results that suggest sex segregated schools not only don’t improve students performances, but also stunts certain necessary social and learning abilities, in the Los Angeles Times article “What's wrong with single-sex schools? A lot.” She begins exposing underlying sexist and racist motivations for sex-separated schools and proceeds to explain that the segregation supports generalization about differences between the sexes, which Williams suggests is common among school practices. Williams continues, admitting that the schools provide opportunities for smaller class sizes as well as allow for “strong mentoring relationships”, although she finds fault with the overall lack of evidence that single-sex education improve student’s performances. Imagine a school classroom with commotion and people talking loudly. Most likely the picture was boys and girls, co learning in a classroom. Many people think this would be a normal classroom, but fortunately this has not always been the case. Classrooms have evolved greatly in the since of boys and girls gaining the “same and equal” education. With recent research and trials, this has been proven not to be the case. Single-gender education produces better results than coeducational classrooms.
Lastly, students who go to single-gender schools do not have any academic advantages over children who attend co-ed schools. In “Co-Ed Schools are Here to Stay” the text states,”After looking at 184 studies, the researchers failed to find significant advantages of single-gender schooling for either boys or girls.” This shows that students at co-ed schools do just as well academically as students at single-gender schools. Knowing this information, there is no reason to send your child to a single-gender school when there is no advantages in you child’s school life or life as an adult.
Many schools across the country are now changing their average classrooms to “segregated” classes. Despite the students choice of being into a classroom like this there are still various controversial issues that cause chaos when people talk about single gender classrooms. Some people believe single gender classrooms are beneficial to the students and some believe they are the worst thing man could have created but, both of those statements are very inaccurate. There are over 540 single-sex schools throughout the U.S. since 2010. However, new up to date studies have shown that separating males and females in school has lead to better overall test scores and career opportunities.
