As we learned the Secret Service , and other agencies, assigns an experienced agent to oversee the advance for every site the president visits during a trip. That “site agent” is often a senior member of the detail, or at least trusted by his or her colleagues to supervise the complex process of managing even a short visit from the most powerful man in the world. Site agents handle everything. They are responsible for everything. Details matter. If the Secret Service suffers from complacency, or if agents are not properly trained, the sites will fall apart. Errors, large and small, will cascade. Yet here are some news-making moments and blunders from the past five years: In November 2009 reality TV stars Tareq and Michaele Salahi became known as the “White House party crashers” when they attended a White House state dinner without an invitation. The Secret Service let the couple into the White House, where their arrival was broadcast just like every other visiting dignitary. Associated Press. As President Obama spoke at Nelson Mandela’s memorial service, he was accompanied by a purported sign-language translator. Except the interpreter wasn’t actually an interpreter –in fact he knew nothing of sign language, had been diagnosed with mental illness and had faced charges of rape and murder in the past. This caused understandable alarm that a potentially dangerous person was allowed to be in such close proximity to the president for so long. The Secret Service responded that agents were in close proximity to the president — and “while the agents don’t know sign language, they know human language” and would have taken action if Mr. Jantjie had attempted to harm the president.
