As we learned the Secret Service , and other agencies, assigns an experienced agent to oversee the advance for every site the president visits during a trip. That “site agent” is often a senior member of the detail, or at least trusted by his or her colleagues to supervise the complex process of managing even a short visit from the most powerful man in the world. Site agents handle everything. They are responsible for everything. Details matter. If the Secret Service suffers from complacency, or if agents are not properly trained, the sites will fall apart. Errors, large and small, will cascade. Yet here are some news-making moments and blunders from the past five years: In November 2009 reality TV stars Tareq and Michaele Salahi became known as the “White House party crashers” when they attended a White House state dinner without an invitation. The Secret Service let the couple into the White House, where their arrival was broadcast just like every other visiting dignitary. The appearance raised concerns that guests weren’t being properly vetted. Another memorable moment happened …show more content…
Associated Press. As President Obama spoke at Nelson Mandela’s memorial service, he was accompanied by a purported sign-language translator. Except the interpreter wasn’t actually an interpreter –in fact he knew nothing of sign language, had been diagnosed with mental illness and had faced charges of rape and murder in the past. This caused understandable alarm that a potentially dangerous person was allowed to be in such close proximity to the president for so long. The Secret Service responded that agents were in close proximity to the president — and “while the agents don’t know sign language, they know human language” and would have taken action if Mr. Jantjie had attempted to harm the president.
But the little bit of good that came from this is now the secret service is very careful about protecting their presidents and wise about where the president
Prior to reading this article, I understood that interpreting had high demands of the job and certain areas where interpreters could control certain areas of the demands. However, Dean and Pollard
Good evening to all. I hope all is well this week. As many of you have stated, I thought I had a descent grasp of the United States Intelligence oversight. However, to my surprise I found that I actually did not have as good of an understanding as I thought. My shortcoming was in understanding just how convoluted the system is. The system has evolved over the years just as many things do. However, the system still has a long way to go before it’s as effective as it could be. Former Under Secretary Charles Allen noted that “virtually any terrorist attack on the homeland that one can imagine must exploit a border crossing, a port of entry, a critical infrastructure, or one of the other domains that the department has an obligation to
2. Speaking a different language: When someone speaks a different language to you or uses sign language, they may not be able to understand what you are trying to say or what the other person is trying to say.
When GUAC gets to the Whitehouse to protest and noon, a Secret Service agent stops them and informs GUAC members that no protests are allowed this week by any group from 10am-2pm within a 2 block radius of the Whitehouse because the Secret Service is performing training drills. The agent also informs you that when protesting, all protestors must remain on the sidewalk and cannot go into the street. As the agent tells you this, you see a group of people with signs that have
American Sign Language Interpreters who interpret in mental health settings have a unique opportunity to be an effective part of the healing process for Deaf consumers by accurately interpreting the information between him or her and their mental health physician and / or team. In order to accomplish this, interpreters must seek the necessary training to work in the mental health setting, educate themselves about the various mental illnesses , understand the various demands and controls necessary to function in this environment, and lastly, know how to take care of themselves when they feel emotionally drained from working in this type of environment.
All the while the President denied any knowledge or White House involvement in the break-ins. However, it was found that secret tapings of conversations were recorded in the President’s office. At first, the President refused to provide the tapes and then when they were finally released it was found that “some were missing or possibly destroyed.” (Wiegand, S., n.d.)
The 9/11 commission clearly identified a problem with communication between the Intelligence Community and State and Local Law Enforcement which resulted in a new edict (from the IRTPA) of Information Sharing yet clearance levels and accesses quickly became an issue in disseminating information to those with a need to know. To help bridge this gap, the Homeland Security Act of 2002 was passed to crate the DHS by bringing 22 under its umbrella with a primary mission of protecting the homeland from terrorism (Blum, 2010). To do so, DHS’s key mission is to collect, analyze, and disseminate key/related information and share it with the IC and nontraditional partners (state/local governments as well as the private sector) (Blum, 2010). Likewise,
In the past couple of years, media has had a spike in interest when it comes to Deaf people and their interpreters. From Saturday Night Live, to Dancing with the Stars, the mainstream is becoming more aware of the work of interpreters. Sign language interpreting, is a developing field still professionally in its adolescents. Only as recently as 2012 have the requirements to work in the field and qualify for national certification increased to a bachelor degree (National Interpreter Certification (NIC) | Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, 2017). Slowly since, universities are creating new degree pathways to suit this evaluation of the professional standards, and growth in popularity. Montclair State University, located in
Critics in the favor of keeping the wall have mainly focused on privacy grounds but have not paid serious attention to the impact the Wall might have on the national security. Despite strong evidence from the 9/11 report that the wall has contributed to the intelligence failure that resulted in the 9/11 attacks. The need to remove the wall is crucial to the public safety. The 9/11 report suggested that since the criminal investigators were not aware of the status or the content of intelligence investigations, they did not know what significance to attach to the targets of criminal investigations. To illustrate the fact, the report pointed out the following: Two of the September 11 hijackers resided with an FBI informant. However, the FBI’s law enforcement personnel were not aware of the
Tamoura Thomas works in the Sheriffs civil division clerk. Occasionally, Tamoura must fingerprint people who have committed a crime and some of them are Spanish speaking people and another group of people occasionally happen to be Deaf. Occasionally Tamoura has to work with an interpreter when she needed to communicate with these different groups of people. Tamoura indicated that she does not like using interpreters because of the presence of a third person and she did not like having a third person involved in the conversations. Tamoura felt like the interpreter did not have enough time to help her out. The interpreters at the court house are so busy and spread so thinly that
In addition to conventional threats, chemical, biological and radiological weapons of mass destruction have far greater lethality and scope and pose a greater risk than they have in the past. The kkk terrorist attacks demonstrate the extremism and the uncivilized society of terrorist techniques and challenge the traditional approach to security. The Secret Service is challenged to identify and neutralize potential threats by individuals and groups in this increasingly sophisticated, mobile, and violence prone environment.
“Within our own staff, under my direction, the counsel to the president, Mr. Dean, has conducted a complete investigation of all leads which might involve any present members of the White House staff, no one in this administration, presently employed was involved in this bizarre incident.......what really hurts is if you try to cover things like this up.” (WHT 828)
One night in 1981, Jeff Munks, a police office in San Jose, CA responded to an urgent call and arrived at a residence where a Vietnamese immigrant who spoke no English was screaming and waving his arms agitatedly. Next to him, his son was having trouble breathing. After Jeff guessed what had been happening and immediately called for an ambulance, he kept thinking about emergency situations where danger is exacerbated because of a language barrier. This resulted in Telephone Interpretation being offered since that year. This service connects trained interpreters via telephone to Limited English Proficient (LEP) Individuals. Cyracom International is one of those companies that provide critical
Finally, the TSA is “hopelessly bureaucratic” according to Kip Hawle, a former TSA chief (Edwards, 2013). That bureaucracy often leads to extended retention of inefficient, ineffectual employees largely because the hiring and firing process is arduous. One study on TSA staff members suggests that employees may not take action because not adhering to the rules and regulations set forth comes with great penalties. Therefore, the employees are typically not free-thinking problem solvers, but people who want to complete their tasks without getting any attention. Unfortunately, this may lead to oversight if a terrorist threat does occur (De Gramatica, Massacci, Shim, Turhan, & Williams, 2017).
