The way in which my social location can impact my relationship with Asif is my gender and perceived age. In the case study, Asif stated that he feels shy and uncomfortable speaking to women his age. If he is feeling uncomfortable, that could hinder the communication process while counseling (Walsh, 2013). The fact that I am both a woman and close to his age could magnify the feelings that he has expressed. Even though I am twenty-five years old, I do appear much younger than my age. When counseling with Asif, he may experience difficulty communicating with me because I look to be close to his age. Asif has strong emotional reactions, and it may be difficult to get him to see how his thoughts are the root of the fear that he is experiencing.
Dawn Bock related she was northbound on Morris Bridge Road from Cross Creek Boulevard and was coming home from Petco on Bruce B. Downs Boulevard. Bock said she was slowing to make a left turn onto Pictorial Place Drive and was going about 20-25 mph. Bock advised as she was turning, her daughter, Kaitlyn M. Bock, who was sitting in the right front passenger seat, yelled when she saw the motorcycle. Bock advised she recalls moving the steering wheel to the left to turn in and to get out of his way and tried to keep turning left. Bock said she thought the motorcycle would go around her, knowing she was making a left turn but instead, said the motorcycle turned in with her. Bock related she heard the motorcycle hit her car and then the airbags
I think that it would be important to build a safe space for the couple to be able to communicate authentically about the issues at hand. To accomplish this, I would try to make a list collaboratively with couple in what safety means for them while in therapy. The list will then become the ground rules for the continuation of the therapy. From there, I would take some time to establish “I” statements as a way to communicate issues from the perspective of the person who is talking about a relational issue. Taking turns while talking would be another ground rule that I would establish as they appear to talk over each other during emotional moments. Talking with respect would be another rule to establish in order to allow the couple to listen to each other.
In order to understand how my social location can influence the helping relationship with Naana it is important to remember that we both have different lived experiences and our environments have affected us in unique ways (Green and McDermott, 2010). Ecological systems perspective provides a focus on how a person's environment is always changing which requires the client to constantly adapt and change so they are better able to fit within their new social environment (Hepworth et al., 2013). Reflecting on how my social location can impact the therapeutic relationship it is imperative for me to consider that I am single, childless and close in age to Nanna. In light of this, these factors may influence her perception of me because she may
Relational – Cultural Theory (RCT) began as a feminist perspective that allowed psychologists a more appropriate measure of women’s experiences in terms of relationships that were not created by and for other male researchers. The inception of this theoretical perspective originates from the recognition that most research and consequent response considers the male as the norm and makes assumptions about the experience of women based on that norm that may not give a correct account of the female experience. This standpoint, however, has evolved and “may also include a better understanding of male growth and development” (Robbins, Chatterjee, & Canda, 2012, p. 125). It allows for a greater understanding and ability to serve those who experience any number of situations and circumstances during the life course. Robbins et al. explain, “it has expanded to better account for all human experience, both male and female” and connects the individual problem to the greater social world; that is, it looks at the individual relationships and consequent suffering within the context of the greater culture (2012, p. 125).
Flynn-Piercy (2002) conducted a heuristic study examining the impact of Relate counsellors training on their relationships with their partners. It was found that there was a significant impact on these relationships, which trainees had been unprepared for. The advantages of their training included improved communication, a disadvantage was that partners became “personally de-stablised” (Flynn-Piercy, 2002: 55). Despite the advantages, there was an overall threat to the relationships. This study is, however, not generalisable to all trainee counsellors since it only examined those training as Relate counsellors who specifically work in the area of relationships.
a. Social location/pg. 3: the group memberships that people have because of their location in history and society. This term was represented specifically in many parts of the documentary. The migrant workers are able to live better off when they live in groups. The group’s sizes do vary but it tends to be a bit larger than the normal size of an average American family. The migrant workers live this way because of the wages that they earn. The more members of the group they have the more money they will bring in from working in the fields. The social location relates to the migrant workers in very direct ways. This happens because of how they are classified in society. The migrants feel as if the fruit and vegetable fields are their
The intersection of dominant ideologies of race, class, and gender are important in shaping my social location and experiences. By exercising my sociological imagination (Mills, 1959), I will argue how my social location as an Asian American woman with a working class background has worked separately and together to influence how I behave, how others treat and view me, and how I understand the world. The sociological imagination has allowed me to understand my own “biography”, or life experiences by understanding the “history”, or larger social structures in which I grew up in (Mills, 1959). First, I will describe my family’s demographic characteristics in relation to California and the United States to put my analysis into context. I
Social location greatly impacts why people do what they do. We are all heavily influenced by our societies, our minds, behaviors, and overall beings are affected by everything that we each experience and witness since birth. Henslin (2015) defines social location as, “the corners in life that people occupy because of their place in a society” (p. 2). This means that different aspects and characteristics of one’s life have placed them into specific groups within their society, which can often affect their ways of thinking and in turn, their behavior.
In Adrienne Rich's Notes Towards a Politics of Location (1984), Rich discusses the importance of one's awareness of location and the role it plays in being able to empathize with people of different ethnicities, social backgrounds, and sexual orientations. The idea of location applies not just to women who part of the transnational feminist movement in the United States are, is but also for people all over the globe to change their ways of thinking about their location and how they can relate to others from differing locations by asking specific questions. In Notes Towards a Politics of Location, Rich successfully encourages readers to reflect on their "centeredness" and offers solutions to overcome the barriers that "centeredness" may construct. Rich's essay can also be related to Adichie's TedTalk from 2009 titled The Danger of a Single Story, where Adichie gives a compelling account of how
Social location, or the status in life that people have because of their place in a society, have a huge impact on everyone. The impact that social location created could be neutral, but most of the time it will have a positive or negative impact on people. For example, an African American could be discriminated because of his ethnicity, or a patient will choose an older doctor when he needs a treatment. Different social location that we have will affect our decisions in everyday life, and most of the time it happened subconsciously, which means we don’t realize that the decisions we make are based on our social location. Like everyone else, I was affected by my own social location, both positively and negatively.

Social location and social imagination are essential aspects in defining ones’ life and the shaping features of it. Social location or social context is characterized by the sociological concept which helps people to discover and understand themselves through the immediate physical settings in which they were raised, their culture, and the groups that they have interacted with. It helps in defining oneself through aspects such as ethnicity, gender, social class, geographical location, and levels of education, as well as the “assigned coordinates” such as school, given by parents, family, and the courts. It has become normal for us to believe in the reality of social location and it is key to understanding who you are, how you have become who
We are always trying to figure out where we are in this world, or how we got where we are today. Obviously you have no choice of parents or where your born and these are two major contributing factors of who am I today. Being born white and a male society has immediately granted social advantages or white privileges. But, how privileged was I really? Being born in a highly populated city to first generations Americans without high school diplomas. I did have some advantages and I realized them growing up around my non-white friends. But compared to other white people I didn’t see my self privileged in many ways.
In sociology, social location is defined as the spaces that people occupy due to their location in society, which also refers to how groups in a society experience the interactive effects of intersecting social hierarchies. In other words, social location is the sum effect of various factors, including social class, race, gender, and geographic location on an individual’s experience, life chances and worldview. Like most people, my social location is greatly affected by the intersection of my race, gender, social class, however, what contributed the most to my social location is my family, especially my mother.
Firstly, the threats that will be posed by Internet to its location-based strategy is the competitors of Mangler’s that implement and using internet as their main way in business may be able to develop and extensive their business and reach their customers globally compared using location-based strategy.
