Everyone in this world is a part of their environment. Everything in their environment as an effect on their behaviors. The way people are using social sites like Facebook isn’t always good, that could be a reason on why some of these shootings are getting outrageous. Social media is the number one behavior changer. Social media has changed the way people shop, the way they eat, their appearance, their relationships, and the way they educate themselves. It isn’t bad in most ways but it’s the way people make it to be.

Media constantly surrounds our everyday lives whether we like to admit it or not. In some cases, it is an advertisement flashing on the T.V. or listening to the newest hit on the radio. Although we think we can control what we watch and explore, sometimes we are exposed involuntary to certain topics. Our life styles, preference, and individuality all influence what we each choose to consume and not consume. In totality, media subjects us to both involuntary and voluntary consumption and elicits a physical and mental effect on individuals who are exposed.

According to dictionary.com, the word media is defined as the means of communication, as radio and television, newspapers, magazines, and the Internet, that reach or influence people widely. By definition, the media is constantly swarming the public audience day-in and day-out while never coming to a halt. National and global coverage from the media is essential for all people who desire staying up-to-date with the current events that are occurring all over the world. Although there are many different forms of media, while reflecting over a three day period of how I personally use media, I have come to realize many things. Most of my observations will be discussed throughout this essay.

With the state in which our media has portrayed the definition of beauty and the wide spread of information through social platforms, we as a society have long begun to cast social pressure and shun those that does not fit the ideal image. The problem that comes with such pressure, especially within adolescents, a stage in psychology in which Erik Erikson describes as crisis during adolescence and the development of self identity (Angel Oswalt, 2010), the projection of a perfect body has lead many teenagers to develop eating disorder which according to Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders (ANAD, 2012), around 95% percent with such disorders are in the ages of 12 and 25. Eating disorder is not the only problem that social media has an effect on body image, people go through extremes to achieve that ideal image, going through depression, body dysmorphic, and binge eating. Given the tremendous pressure by the society, many male and female alike feels the pressure to be at a certain shape to be part of the society. In a conducted survey of 185 students in a college setting, 58% felt pressure to be at a certain weight, 83% has dieted and 44% were at an average weight (ANAD, 2012). With these identities individuals are able to successfully interact within such social networks in ways in which have changed social statuses, impacted the overall health of individuals and created new opportunities for users.

Within the past decade, social media usage has increased exponentially, especially amongst adolescents (Blease, 2015). The emergence of social networking sites has provided society with a fast and convenient way to stay in contact with family, friends and even acquaintances. Major social networking sites allows individuals who in the past would have lost touch a front seat to every major life milestone with a simple click of a button. Adolescents being raised today are openly embracing this new technological age, which has never been experienced before. Adolescence is crucial point during an individual’s development that is traditionally challenging. This phase is marked by an urge for independence from the parental unit and the desire to be socially connected. As a direct result, they are highly susceptible to external influences such as peer pressure. Social networking sites have turned into a tool in which adolescents may practice identity exploration. Due to constant exposure, for those who partake in social media, their peers scrutinize their every action. This action serves as an innate behavioral rehearsal response to keep unfavorable and untrustworthy individuals from the pack; therefore every action is under a microscope. In an effort to identify the affects of this communication evolution, psychologists are researching the causal pathways and the effects of social media use amongst adolescents.

We talked briefly about the person I had became and that she had seen both of my children be born. I asked her if I would ever see her again and she told me she always heard me talk to her.
