The field of sociology is vastly different than other disciplines. When we look at social problems, sociology looks deep into the problem to find the basis relaying back to the relationship between individuals and society. “As a social science, sociology offers an objective and systematic approach to understanding the causes of social problems.” (Leon-Guerrero, 2014, p 5) When we look at determining which social problems are significant or not, we rely on social constructionism. Social constructionism defines problems, only if they are personally observed as a problem. As a society, we recognize problems through objective and subjective realties. Objective reality comes from acknowledging that a problem exists via researching data. The more prevalent recognition of a problem is through subjective reality. This reality depends on personal experiences deeming the problem valid (Leon-Guerrero, 2014). One of the biggest recent social problems in our society today is poverty. Most Americans are aware of this problem, primarily through subjective reality. Poverty is often broken into two groups: absolute poverty and relative poverty. “Absolute poverty refers to a lack of basic necessities such as food, shelter, and income. Relative poverty refers to a situation in which some people fail to achieve the average income or lifestyle enjoyed by the rest of society.” (Leon-Guerrero, 2014, p 39) Our government has enacted two policies to measure poverty.
